With the RAK v2 miners it really isn't necessary to back up your SD Card. The "key" you mentioned is not stored on the card anymore. There is a physical chip on the board called a secure element that has your miner's unique "swarm key" on it. So if your SD card dies all you need to do is get a new card, download the latest OS image from RAK and flash it to the card, install the card and your back up and running.

thanks for the comprehensive and clear video, very helpful... For backing up the SD card... The cover is just an adhesive sticker, use a razor blade or knife to get under it and pull it back. Be careful not to touch the adhesive (because you want to put it back). Tweezers (especially the ones that come with a swiss army knife) work really well at extracting the card. Highly recommend you follow the guidance to use tweezers to put it back. It was way too easy to have the card fall into the case... I mean, poor design easy. To retrieve the card after it fell into the miner case, I removed the four screws on the side of the miner near the slot and pulled the cover back a little (not all the way). I was able to jiggle the card to fall out of the little gap. Again, really poor design to have a gap the size of the card literally 1mm from the slot where the card goes in.

💯 agree with all the tips provided. One thing though, the newer versions of the hotspot (that everyone is receiving by now) don't require a backup of the card anymore BUT if your hotspot is shipped with a 32GB card it's recommended to upgrade that to a 64GB card due to the increased size of the Helium blockchain.

Great video! I just got a new gold Rak and It can not connect to bluetooth. I push the bluetooth pairing and its still not connecting. Anyway to fix this?

Make sure that it's actually power up (red light visible on the side that contains the SD card). Wait a few minutes after powering it up and press the BL button and try to pair for a minute or two. If that doesn't work you'll have to email their support and/or ask in the official Helium Discord community.

My pleasure. You don't need the backup anymore with newer models BUT based on the increasing blockchain size it's recommended to upgrade to a 64GB card. And yes, you can make a backup and then flash that onto a new 64GB card even if you hotspot has already been running for some time (just did that for our hotspot last week).

Hi, great for explanation, but I have a question. Do you use Helium hotspot whit IP public or IP dinamic (How a classic portable router whit a SIM phone)? It's possible do it?

Yes, you could use a portable router but unless your provide supports port forwarding (which is highly unlikely) the hotspot would be "relayed" and you'd earn less. You can solve that by using a VPN but that's too complex to explain in the comments.

Thanks for the video. Have you ever had to change the sd card? My hotspot is having all sorts of issues and has done zero activities in 2 weeks. It is on ethernet and used to work very well for months. Now it is syncing for 5 days. Done everything ( unplugged etc) . The only thing I can now think of is to change SD card. Any experience with that?

No, haven't had the issue. But it wouldn't be too hard if you already backed up your card. That said, I think it's right now a general issue with Helium because I can see plenty of people having trouble at reddit.com/r/HeliumNetwork One of our hotspots (Nebra) also stopped working for a day, but luckily restarting it got it back up again. Our RAK v2 is the one that's so far working best (had two days of zero earnings during the last 3+ months that got resolved with a simple reboot).

Hi! Nice video! A couple of questions, I understand that the device should be synchronized for some time, if so, how long? I forwarded the ports. And on helium.vision, should my point appear immediately, or when will there be full synchronization? In the mobile app there is no asserted location :( Thanks in advance.

How long the initial sync takes varies. Our fastest was 12 hours, and the longest around 7 days so far across 6 hotspots. It takes some time until the explorer also shows your location, since that's a separate transaction that you can see in your wallet.

You can just move it. Only if the location changes more than just a few meters would you need to also update the location in the Helium app.

Connect via Bluetooth and check the diagnostics to see if it's fully synced or not. Had the same with ours a week or two ago and had to unplug it for a few minutes + then wait almost 2 days for it to catch up with the blockchain again. Since then it's been earning again as usual.

After you connect your hotspot to the internet you need to let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes before you try and register it through the Helium app. During this time the hotspot is updating its firmware.

Plug in the wire, restart the router. They have no issues just because they lose the connection. Just be patient, depending on how far you synced already it can take days until a new hotspot is fully caught up and starts doing something.

One of my hotspots was active and productive and then during that update...it's been offline for over a month now. Prior to this it was in a constant state of syncing. When running diagnostic tests it was always at 0 for the sync to Blockchain. Now it's just offline no matter what. Do you think it's a corrupted SD card ?

It's already on the blockchain so there is nothing to reset AFAIK. Best approach, unplug it, wait for a minute, plug it back in and give it two days to catch up if needed. For our hotspots earnings just started to show up yesterday again, so your hotspot is likely fine and should also show earnings again soon.

@@ChristianRauchenwald chris, I am traing to do the first sync on a rak v2, the original firmware in the original sd card was too old so the sync stucked in block 1 for 15 hours... so i flashed a new 64gb card and now it shows 100 full sync in hellium app (but i think its impossible because 1 hour ago it was in 0 per cent) and in real time status apps like hottspoty or heliumgeek it shows offline and no response... in helium map it i can see the location but i cannot see the green hexagon, and says SYNCING... 0 per cent transmit scale... dont show any data... i dont know whats going on...

That's fine. Over time a lot of things got improved and that inbound connection including setting up the port forwarding to the hotspot is no longer necessary.

How do we pair with remote or outdoor hotspots? My hotspot is oitside on a tower,, but it is connected via ethernet to my house wifi router, so I should be able to login via ip address instead of Bluetooth.

Outdoor Hotspots are also paired via Bluetooh. Nebraska outdoor hotspots, for example, have Bluetooth enabled for the first few minutes after they are turned on, so once they are installed simply unluging the power and plugging it back in is enough to be able to enable Bluetooth and be able to pair with the device.

Hard to diagnose devices with little information like that. Keep in mind that the Helium explorer doesn't show real-time status. If you are sure that it's turned on and connected just wait a day or two for the Explorer to catch up and also use heliumstatus.io/ as it's closer to real time than the explorer.

Hard to say, I also had hotspots that took almost 14 days to sync. Especially when you are just connected through WiFi that's not surprising. As long as you can see that the device is online within your network I'd just wait a bit longer and be patient.

Mine is offline, and it's still offline to this day. Even if I try to fire up the diagnostic setup in Helium, my hotspot doesn't show up (it's WisGate/RAK). Even when I try to press the pairing button.

That sounds like it's broken. Possibly that it got too hot at some point (if it was placed directly in the sun). Personally, I'd open it to check if everything looks fine, but if you don't want to do that, then the best course of action would be to contact support.

If you just got your hotspot recently, you don't need to backup the card anymore. They even removed the instructions for it from docs.rakwireless.com/Product-Categories/WisGate/RAK-Hotspot-Miner-v2/Quickstart/ because it's not needed anymore.

Well I had to log out and then log back in after already set up and running for almost a month and a half. But when I did this it erased my wallet and now it says that my hotspot already has an owner. But the owner is me so I don’t understand. I did enter my correct 12 seed phrase correctly. This is an issue several people have had but with no resolve .

I know you likely won't believe it but if you can't see your hotspot in your wallet after entering your recovery phrase then you didn't enter th right phrase.

Not sure where you read that, AFAIK all RAK hotspots are still approved and even if RAK would lose their approval it would only affect new hotspots and those already sold would still be ok.

helium map shows 0 per cent transmit scale and doesnt show any data, only name, location but no green hexagon and no transmit scale, helium app shows it fully sync (impossible to sync in 1 hour) and others real time status apps like hotspotty or heliumgeek shows offline no response....

Just be patient. The initial sync can take quite some time, and the Explorer and other tools are all delayed to some extend.

Hi Christian, thank you for your video. However, I am missing something. Because in my case, I can't even connect my smartphone to the RAK v2 Miner via Blutooth/App. The error message appears: "Your onboarding address is invalid. Please contact manufacturer for next steps". Before that, it didn't work either, but I was able to fix it by replacing the correctly formatted Micro SD card (from 32 GB to 128 GB). I don't understand how everyone could connect to their RAK miner so easily. I couldn't find a solution to my problem anywhere on the internet. - Greetings from Germany, Bremen

I had that happen with one hotspot from another manufacturer but there it then worked suddenly when I tried it one or two days later. I'd open a ticket with wherever you ordered your hotspot but in between then already try once per day to see if the error resolves itself.

Takes a couple of hours maybe even a day until the yellow "Relayed" badge disappears in the app and on the Helium Explorer.

You just have to wait, as long as your hotspot is fully synced it will do everything it has to over time.

I'm making a lot less money, about 3 Euros a day, but I'm in an area that is not next to other hotspots. I'm hoping one of my neighbours wakes up!

3 Euro's daily is still potentially more than 1,000 per year just for having the hotspot standing around. And as you say, once someone else in your area gets a hotspot it will likely just get better.

Unsere 7 hotspots sind alle aktuell nicht optimiert und teilweise zwischendurch offline (alle in der Ukraine)) und daher nicht wirklich als Vergleichswert geeignet. Unterm Strich sind wir mit dem Verdienst aber sehr zufrieden, da wir immer noch an das Projekt glauben und davon ausgehen, dass der Wert je HNT über die nächsten 10 Jahre steigen könnte/sollte. Ich persönlich finde selbst bei einem ROI von 2 oder 3 Jahren ist es mMn immer noch eine gute Idee, da es nicht viele Alternativen mit gleichem oder besseren Ertrag gibt und man am Ende mit jedem Hotspot eine weitere passive Einkunftsquelle aufbaut.
