The people who make these types of videos know nothing about horses, probably don't own a horse and don't want to know about horses. Horses taken off the range generally have better, more peaceful lives, live longer and healthier lives. They come to know, trust and love humans. They bring joy and love to so many people and help enrich the lives of so many adults and children, including mentally and physically challenged people.

Horses don't exist to "bring joy and love to so many people and help enrich the lives of so many adults and children, including mentally and physically challenged people." They exist for their selves, and like all animals, including humans, desire their freedom. People who criticize videos like this one don't give a damn about horses except in the context of what the horse can do for them. Very sad and cruel.

Horses taken off the range are slaughtered. That is not peaceful. They are not playthings for humans.They are not there to "enrich the lives" of humans. Did you not see them slamming the gate on the head of the foal?! How is peaceful? And yes, the people who make these films DO have horses. That is why they are so concerned about what is happening to the wild horses.

This video is so one sided that I laughed through most of it. Im a Cowboy in Nevada and I have several of these wild horses. They eat as good as I do and they get lots of love and attention. They are not just "equipment" for us, but count as one of our friends. As far as the roundups go, It is a necessary thing to control the population explosion that had taken place between 2000 and now. Those "captured" horses will get vet care such as inoculations for equine illnesses and some will get birth control at certain times to prevent overpopulation. Its called management and conservation and its aim is to keep the wild horses roaming on the open ranges of the west. I do not agree with all of the practices of the BLM, but they are doing the best with what they have. Wild horses will roam the west for many years, decades to come. They are an iconic symbol of America and they are protected by the free roaming wild horse and burros act of 1971 and 1976. Dont let people who dont work the land tell you what to think. I suggest touring a BLM wild horse refuge and see how they are conserving our wild horses and burros first hand. Happy Trails yall!
@patcuvie

I don't doubt you laughed at the plight of the wild horses because cowboys don't give a damn about wild horses, or any horse for that matter. They only care about using horses and when they've used them up, the cowboys I've talked to told me, they send them to slaughter. So a cowboy's opinion is about as relevant to me as a rancher's, who hate wild horses and nature in general.

The greatest wild horse advocate was the late Velma Brown Johnston. She is solely responsible along with school children from around the country for getting the 1974 wild horse and free roaming burrows act into law. She did not like the helicopters rounding up the horses because she thought it was cruel. She decided to Ride along with the helicopters during a BLM Roundup. Upon conclusion, she noted that she felt the helicopters or more humane and less stressful than a group of cowboys rounding them up and driving them distances to a BLM facility. What the BLM is doing is the most humane way of dealing with an overpopulation that will extinct itself in only a few short years. That is why ranchers, wild horse advocates, and the BLM get together to come up with solutions to these difficult problems on our open range regarding our wild horses and burrows. I have ridden that range and I have seen first hand the issues we face and it won't get done with everybody pointing a finger at each other and offering no solutions to the problem. Come on out west Lisa, see it with your own two eyes, and then offer your solutions to the issue. Be well and may God bless.

i have a mustang from the Calico mountains. i live in the south east US and grass and fresh mountain water is abundant here. my gelding is six years old and he is doing well. the world is his for the taking. he dosent have to worry about predators or starvation. he will always be wild no one can ever take that from him and his spirit is definitely not broken but he is part of my herd now he is my partner and my friend. we owe it to wild horses to preserve them and keep their numbers reasonable so that the quality of life for the ones we leave wild are acceptable and reasonable.

@Esmeebelambelol This thing about "Breaking their spirit" is just so much metaphysical mumbo jumbo. I've encountered some captured mustangs and they seemed to be just as "spirited" and in a good state of mind as any horse I've yet ridden. They're smart animals and they figure things out...and they get over things that bother them, if treated decently afterwards. Horses only need a few things to be happy: Safety, good shelter, good food, good companionship. I love them but they're not human.
@Turboy65
@Turboy65 12 лет назад
My problem with this video is that there are several lies stated as truths. Captured horses do not ALL lose their freedom. Some of them (it varies from roundup to roundup) are returned to the range. The objective is to maintain the herd numbers at a generally constant level, and horses will increase their population by about 20 percent per year in good years. But I DO agree that their management often falls short of compassionate and humane.

These conditions remind me of horse slaughter. I told my mom today after seeing some videos I would NEVER adopt a mustang because of how they're treated. Ranchers say they need 500 acres for their cattle? Bullshit if they're "low maintenance", horses can live off five acres at the most. This is appalling. Horses who have never seen a human, let alone been treated like this are terrified of humans. ANY horse... Any, whether wild or domestic who has never been touched by a human hand would...

@patcuvie
@patcuvie 3 года назад
Wild horses are wild animals and any wild animal is subject to starvation. That's a natural balance of the ecosystem. It ensures the strong survive, which in turn makes the wild horses stronger. Additionally, starving animals feed predators, who help keep the ecosystem in balance. That there's a chance, however small, a wild horse will starve is not a good reason for taking them out of their home, stripping them of their freedom and the family they love.

The wild horses stay with their moms until they're two years old. They stay with their families until the stallion drives them off at two when he knows they're old enough to make it. Cloud Wild Stallion of the Rockies showed an 18 month old. (the woman follows the herds, so she's pretty good on age) with a bachelor herd. She didn't understand why a horse so young was there and an older stallion was protecting. Apparently it's whole family died in a freak of nature accident. Usually it's at two.

@@katgagnon4509 Feral definition from dictionary.com: feral, (1) existing in a natural state, as animals or plants; not domesticated or cultivated; wild, (2) having reverted to the wild state, as from domestication: a pack of feral dogs roaming the woods, (3) of or characteristic of wild animals; ferocious; brutal.

@@katgagnon4509 I refuted your point that feral and wild are two different things. It is irrelevant how they got here the fact remains they have "reverted to the wild state" and are "existing in a natural state- not domesticated or cultivated; wild." They are now wild horses. Wild horses have the exact same DNA as the original horses which evolved in North American and went extinct. So current wild horses are essentially a reintroduced native North American species.

"Disturbing the peace, freighting the horses, running and trapping them, losing their freedom for life" is hardly the comments of an unbiased observer. Which is fine, if you are biased, but does not qualify as a rational and factual presentation. Wild animal management is a controversial and difficult concept with arguments on both sides which is not helped by sensational and biased statements. Incidentally, the use of helicopters was reintroduced as a more humane way of managing overpopulated ranges, but I doubt if the presenter is aware of this history.

To be fair about it, none of the footage in this video shows the horses running at a gallop. They're cantering or trotting, so they're NOT being pressured to run their fastest. The BLM HAS been known to run them too fast, but that didn't happen while this video was made. In any event, the BLM should be forbidden to drive horses with any aerial vehicles or motorized vehicles. On foot or horseback, or not at all.

What happens to the horses left behind? Unless they find another herd, they're going to die anyway. Horses don't live in a herd for just companionship. Horses who live domestically still keep a herd to make sure that no predators can get them. It's a natural instinct for them to do so. If you let go of just a few horses at different times, unless they're very lucky, they can't make a herd. It makes it a disaster, let alone the fact they suffered all that trauma in the first place.

I also watched a documentary that told the Rancher's perspective on the Wild Horse problem and it really opened my eyes as to what really goes on because Rancho talked about how if they can't graze their cattle or they can only put half their herd out to pasture for a year then it really affects them because they can't provide for their families and the banks don't care whether or not they can do that or not because they have bills to pay and one Rancher talked about how he saw a foal nursing off of its dead mother because she ate shrub and colic I just felt like watching that documentary help me see why mustangs have to be removed from the land

Ranching is a scourge on the land - destroying the land and killing the predators, severely disrupting the natural balance of the ecosystem. Public land ranchers are heavily subsidized by our tax dollars, making public lands ranching the equivalent of "welfare ranching." Public land ranching is an anachronism that needs to be relegated to the history books. Wild horses are like all wild animals, they are subject to predation and starvation. However, that is no reason to take away their freedom and strip them from their families. Wild horses love their free lives and are entitled to live them just as we are entitled to live our lives free.

I'll also say that I absolutely see no point whatsoever in separating mares from their foals. Certainly not at this point. A proper management system would keep mares and foals together until the young horse is a yearling and mostly on his own anyway. BTW, cows grazed on BLM lands are only 2 percent of the cattle raised in the US. I say evict the cows and give the land back to the horses who have more right to it. But Big Cattle, Inc bribes .gov and the BLM.

Obviously this man is preaching about a topic he does not know or did not research enought. The Bureau or Land Management does use helicopters to round up the mustangs. However do not simply go out every other morning and collect all the mustangs they see and force them to run 100 miles. Each term the BLM creates a census on how many they need to take out of the population in order for the land and other mustangs to live well. and as an FYI mustangs can run at least 30 miles a day for water.

Most of you don't a dame thing of what's going on. I worked out there in that area most of my life. The narrator does not know one quarter of what he is talking about. First off most of those horses that are not let loose again live out a simple life in a feed lot where they have vet clear 24/7, good feed every day and never are adopted out. Second, the ones that are let go are mixed beach up so that there is no in-breading which causes deformed and weak offspring that will suffer. Third as for the helicopter it is not near as hard on the horses as it running them in with Cowboys on horse back and not near as meany are injured this way. As for how meany were loaded in the horse trailer, be leave me that was not crowded at all if it was hauling ranch horses that are tied in place in it it could hold ten head and still have room. Now for the horses that are adopted I have one my self and he is well taken care of and wants for nothing. The requirements to adopt one are very high.

People shut the hell up. 1) The BLM usually will have food and water traps for wild horses. If helicopters are needed it usually means it is a large HMA, or an emergency roundup. 2) The BLM is trying to save theses horses by domesticating them! The BLM works to balance out the environment and safety of areas in and around the HMA. Offering them for sale and adoption is the best option for them. Back before the Wild horse and burro free-roaming acts were passed, these horses were tied up and shot as pests. 3) All of you in the comments, the ranchers and the farmers love the wild horses and most of them actually give out water buckets and whatnot of the borders of properties. Educate yourself. 4) If a horse had the choice of being fed twice maybe three times a day instead of scavenging for food and constantly on the move, these horses are given the chance at a better life. 5) For all of you saying unadopted horses go to slaughter are wrong, they go to either adopting centers (if eligible) or long term holding, which is basically letting them free on a sanctuary to live out their lives in herds and bands they form. or are returned on the range. Just thought I would put some education into your lives.

The BLM does not manage the horses right or humanely. On their video they say they do it humanely "running the horses at their own pace with the helicopters keeping a safe distance", but as you can see in this video they don't do that at all. The helicopters get very close to the horses and even when they are obviously headed for the pen and inside of the runway the helicopter still kept to close as if for the fun of it.

Wild horses get over populated and start inbreeding thus putting a BIG strain on the environment this company is trying to preserve the habitat they dont round up all the wild horses just a select few and those horses are trained fixed given a vets seal of approval and adopted out to screened owners if they horses were left as they are the land would be barren and disformed horses and trust me they werent abused in any way shape or form in this video so maybe you need to look at the other side

That's bull... Some animals remember it for the rest of their lives. Horses are one. I rode at a place where an appaloosa who was bombproof couldn't stand being near a tire. Her owner before this one tied her to one as a yearling and beat her every day with a board. And she was 29 years old. They remember, some recover, most don't. So don't say it doesn't bother them. Some of these horses I'm SURE are never the same again. These horses are going into a massive overload situation for them.

"If there's enough browse for the cows, why isn't there enough for the horses?" Because horses can't eat what cows can. Cows have four-chambered stomachs that will digest almost anything. A horse eats something that even slightly upsets its stomach and it's dead. Horses can't throw up, and often suffer from intestinal blockages because of it. Dude. Do your research before you start white knighting.

They also do it as they think as a "favor" to the horses. They think the mares will at some point start kicking the foals and biting them hard. Which isn't the case in most cases. They might discourage them, but some foals still drink the milk and seek companionship from their mother until two. There are some older horses that watch over their siblings in the herd because they are too young to realize they're in danger. They form a bond that is not really separated until two and maybe longer.

These horses are not feral, feral means wild and menacing, the horses are not menacing. The horse population does need to be controlled or they need to be given more grazing land. We, HUMANS caused this problem and now these beautiful animals are paying the price. Human arrogance is what brought us to this. The BLM is supposed to be helping these horses and they are not, that is a fact.

You will notice that non of them are ever struck. As for the range management if they were left alone, they would eat up all the feed rand then starve. The ranchers do not leave the cattle out there all the time. In the fall and winter the cattle are brought in and fed hay that is grown for them to eat. When the cattle are out on the range there continues moved to keep them from over grazing and hurting the land. I know because that has been my job most of my life and my fathers life. I think it is crueler to not manage the horses and let them starve and breed sickly handicapped offspring that will suffer and die young. We as cattlemen like to see wild horses too, but know that we as people are stewards of the land and animals. So for all of you who don't know what is being done. Go to the BLM or to ranchers and ask. Do your research on this don't take some ones ( who does not know what they are talking about) word for it. There is a whole lot more to it than meets the eye.

Jed Hedges its funny you should mention that, because I don't see this having anything whatsoever to do with religion. Is that where you're heading now with this? Regardless, can you explain why not one of the horses in this video show any sign of the poor condition you describe them in? Starving? No. Crippled? No. In fact, these horses appear to be in excellent health, carrying optimum weight. That won't be the case after a few weeks in those holding pens they will spend the rest of their lives in which you describe as though its 5 star accommodations, while someone working there stated they housed 2000 animals verses the 270 they were made for. What has any of that got to do with YOUR religion? Cause my God is out there in the desert wanting his horses back!

+Cyndi Eason first book in bible god gives man stewardship over land animals. I have seen them starving when the herds are not cut down and there is no feed. oh and all be damed no cattle were around eather. just the over populated horses who ate down all the feed and had stomped out all the springs where they got water. I think your just pissed at your ex and want to try and her him any way you can and if some body gets hit in cross fire you. don't give a shit. sad very sad.

Lisa, I think it's time you take a trip out to Nevada and see the Open range for yourself. There are many problems facing the BLM and wild horse advocates, but I don't think there are many wild horse advocates that will give you a viable solution to the problem of an ecosystem that is out of balance. Wild horse advocates seem to have no viable solutions to the issue except condemning the efforts that are being made currently to solve the issue. Not everyone will be happy with the solutions, but some will be necessary evils to fix a problem we have had for some years now. You can blame the ranchers and you can blame the cowboys and you can blame the BLM, the bottom line is with a ever decreasing open range and the forage on it,

Let me ask you this, if you saw an animal who was starving and skin and bones who is so weak they can't stand on their own two feet because they don't have enough food on the Open range to survive, is that more humane to leave them alone or do we bring some in, feed them and care for them, or do we just ignore the whole problem and hope it goes away. Solutions Lisa, solutions is what we need, comments with no substance helps no one.. especially the wild horse.

@HUGOGRUNER1
@HUGOGRUNER1 2 года назад
So you would take it home by capturing it and feeding it until it is domesticated, then turn it loose. Horses are not dogs and cats, your solution is the same one the BLM is using now. That is what the wild horse refuges are for. Some, not many, will be returned to the wild. Unfortunately, you don't see that in the video. Your suggestion is Noble and good however, it will not work because you are exchanging one evil for another. Whether you capture them, bring them home and feed them and love them, or the BLM does it, the situation remains the same.

I have never cried to a video or comments before. But this i did. I can believe people would do this to wild horses. I was very up set when the foal head got slammed in the gate when it was trying to stay with its mother.The people that say this is better for wild horses think for a moment how would you like it if you were in that situation and were separated from every one you know and love. I know I would not want that. That is how the wild horses feel. Thank you every one that agrees that the wild horses don't need the BML to help them. BML stop hurting the wild horses feelings and spirit. Does any one remember or Know the movie Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. It shows how the wild horses feel and act when they are separated like that. So stop hunting the wild horses and let them BR FREE.

I like how you say those foals are being separated from there mother. It makes me laugh cause a brood mare herd causally has them separated earlier in the colts life, Also the horses don't get the minerals they need from that Nevada grass, and i sure know that only sheep will eat sagebrush, plus when your raised around his stuff its second nature, when you were raised in a suburb. I get you think its wrong but please just grow up, the horses don't get slaughtered or anything like that. I dont think you would like it if horses were starving or eating up some ranchers paycheck or running into a fence cause someone shot a deer, and it spooked them.But the dumb ass commentary was a good laugh.

Mustangs are wild horses. If you bought one (I personally would not) it would be to wild to tame. These horses need to roam freely, so they can gallop on and on. Let the horses live in peace.
