I helped with a moose survey in the Fort Frances area in the early '90's. We surveyed plant diversity and availability. There were morning and evening lookouts for moose in prime habitat. I witnessed a wolf pack digging out a beaver house, huge whitetail bucks in velvet, many close encounters with black bears, but only saw one cow moose. Lots and lots of sign though. Thanks for sharing the video and brining all those wonderful memories back to me.
When I was around 12 years old I started hunting with my Dad! We would be following a deer trail and he would get down on his knees and whisper "hey come here" so I would also get down on my knees and he would proceed to show me how to tell if deer poop was fresh or old...BUT the funniest thing he did was after he would squish it to show me, he would look off to one side away from me and then he would wipe the poop off his gloves onto my pants! lololol...I carried that tradition on to my son! hahaha
Fantastic video;certainly a learning session for me. The only criteria I have used in the past was repeat sightings mean they might be there again. I've never taken the full attributes of the moose into consideration. Thanks so much, Brian 76
Thank you for the video. Fascinating learning about moose. We had a small bull bedding down around our tennis courts this past winter (Utah foothills, Wasatch back). It was exciting looking for him around the neighborhood. Moose sure leave HUGE piles of dung!
I know what you mean about that yellow tint, it makes everything a lot more bright and clear. You start thinking it's a nice sunny day then take them off and it's heavy overcast and grey. I like this type of video, keep up the great content.
Heruhcane Dean My ex husband's Dad is an Optometrist. Years ago when I told him about my difficulty seeing at night while driving due to oncoming headlights, he recommended glasses with a yellow tint for night driving. Said it cut out the glare. I never did do that, but maybe I will now.
Hello from Australia, I've been watching for quite awhile now, I thought I had watched all the videos and some many times over (while I wait for the newest installment) and to my surprise up pops videos from way back 2016, OMG fantastic stuff, thankyou! Very interesting, we don't have these animals in Australia, footage and on the move narration is great!
A few days ago I was on RU-vid and I happen to come across your videos. I just want to tell you you are a very very talented man I’ve never seen anybody with the talent you have what you’ve done with your cabinets in your sauna and your outside grills and everything you’ve done is amazing. I did happen to come across the one where your wife is going to move out there for good and you’re trying to make things as nice as you can for her Which is great. I am 70 years old female of course I just wanna let you know if you think that might help you out I was born and raised a city girl and my husband want to move out into the country. I hate it out here ever since.. I was 2908 first moved out here is the first time I’ve ever been somewhere where there was no phone all dirt roads and it still is 70 years old all dirt roads I hate that part at least where you live there are trees and everything. So I’m going to give you a few things that are going to make life easier for your wife a few ideas. Number one I noticed when you go traipsing around during the winter after the snow is gone everything you don’t have a weapon on you other than a night that I can see. That is kind of irresponsible you have to take care of yourself you never know what can happen I realize during the winter most of the time bears are in hibernation but there are walls they’re all kinds of things you need to take care of yourself. Number two the wash machine that you have your wife using hast to go she loves you with all her heart or she wouldn’t be doing this and I’m telling you that’s crabby got a washboard and using that whatever kind of machine it is is not can I help you out at all with her staying out there forever. You can still be off the grid and have a generator where she Can use some kind of a small wash machine that uses some kind of power. Little things like that make a big difference.
That was very interesting, yellow tinted glasses are a must on cloudy days and at dusk. I use them when paddling on our rivers, being narrow the tress overhang and cause shadows hiding that ever elusive rock :)
Wow great vid ! Here in the highlands of Cape Breton moose where once very common to see, populations have gone down a bit in the last few years but still turn out an above average yield. Thanks for sharing
Great scout through the woodland and swamp. Appreciate the tips about calling and patterns of wind and activity. I like the habitat just like it is to scout and hunt. People using game feeders mess it up in my opinion.
Didn't get my moose this fall, but now that freeze-up has come, I've got until the end of January to track one down in the snow. Such a cool critter. And tasty.
Nice shot at the end. Along old grown up woods roads we often see large section where the moose have reached up 6-8feet and broken then bend down the top of various trees to reach the top buds.
Calling the moose wow interesting ...yeah so lovely forests so great .....this time of relaxing in late everning very nice to watch vedio of Mr James forest so nice .... 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 anyway just be very careful all the time in the forest .... Wow they answer you back Mr James so nice .....👍👍👍👍👍👍
Years ago, I left a domestic violence situation. At the shelter a young lady took me and my children under wing. Turns out she was the Governor of NH's daughter. Her dad was a former judge. Anyway, the house they let us stay in was on the Dover/Madbury/Durham line. At night I would hear/feel loud thumping around the house, outside. Sounded like a bunch of men running through the yard. I would get very terrified. Then it would subside. Happened numerous times. Also, while we were there, noticed the tops of flowers we planted kept getting eaten. I realized (at that time) there were some Moose around, and being a single mom with kids, I was so frightened of maybe accidentally disturbing moose and their babies. Moved away from there and found out a couple years later that it was what locals called the "Madbury Moose" lol I didn't stay long there, haha.
I think that you are an awesome MAN and i dont say this lightly. I Wish that I could have married some one wish the manliness that you exhibit in you work and play and I can your love for family. Thanks again for sharing, you are a classic keep it coming we love your shows.
Great video and felt like we were along for the hike. How far north in Ontario is that place? I've been doing some photography & driving around Apsley most of the summer, but haven't seen any moose yet...still hoping to catch sight of one. Impressive animals.
Do you have any advice on how to go about finding moose. Let’s say I’m going into a new area totally blind. I know that when I’m looking for elk in north Idaho, I’ll look for the north side of slopes, near a water source, and hopefully close to some sort of feed like an old burnt hill. Any suggestions on what type of habitat I should look for when hunting moose, specifically when I’m planning out the hunt. I was always told if you want to hunt a deer, you have to find a deer. That seems to apply to almost all game haha. Also great video, I really appreciated it!
