It's funny for me hear the lady from The Netherlands and known that language is dutch , but hear the lady from Belguim and known is also dutch and sound totally different 😂
I think both Naya and Ria were a bit harder to understand than the previous one with Dutch and German. However it looks like they loosened up a bit and having more fun. So applaud them for that.
As a native German who speaks English fluently and is currently learning dutch this was quite interesting. I can understand all of them even the woman from Belgium. 😁 I personally think dutch and english are more similar than German and English tho. Dutch really feels like a mix of German and English so if u speak either of these languages it's quite easy to understand and master. similar grammar and a lot of similar or even identical vocabulary.
The Syntax of Dutch is the same as German, Dutch has so many words which are msore similar to German words than English words. So I Would Say German is pretty Similar to Dutch, that's why we can understand them sometimes but the English people don't. The biggest problem German people have to understand Dutch is like how they pronounce the j, g and h.
@@derbart1191 Depends, i live in the south-west and can understand the swiss (well, most of them cause their dialects are wild) easily, but have a really hard time with the dutch. Meanwhile people from further north (especially at the dutch border of course) who speak 'Plattdeutsch' (flat german) can literally have a conversation with dutch folks and they understand each other without switching languages. I heard that 'flat german' is far closer to old german than modern standard german that everyone speaks nowadays. And that being so close to dutch would explain why dutch is also more similar to english than the standard german of today.
Im native dutch and speak german, Dutch and german are very very similar alot of the words are the same or very similar dutch is basically german but with like some different words and some english mixed in it
I’ve been learning German for like 6 months. I struggle to normally conversate cause I still have a hard time structuring my own sentences and I still have some vocabulary to learn, I actually understood everything Ria said though (well the words I didn’t know I could fill in from context)! That was sehr cool! :)
Generally, it would be nice if the girls would try to speak more clearly and even slightly slower and easier sentences. Then the success rate would be much higher. Why purposely talk quickly so that the English girl doesn't stand a chance. Even I as a German speaker had some difficulties with Rias second statement!
That's was so fun to watch, as Belgian who learned foreign languages since I was a kid (I live in Walloonia aka the French part of Belgium so my native language is French), I can speak English, Dutch and German so this one so fun to watch ^^ thanks for the video.

That girl from belgium is very hard to hear what she is saying. Even if we can not understand her language. But she is not prouncing her words clearly. Those 3 girls are mumbling their words it looks like they scared to talk
Being german and also speaking and understanding english fluently makes it feel like dutch is my native language tok without ever learning it hahah I understand almost everything. When hearing dutch and having subtitles or reading it i understand it almost as good as english. It gets hard tho when they speak fast or speak really quiet. I could understand a bit what the belgian girl was saying but she was mumbling most of the time which made it pretty hard
The one from Belgium doesn’t speak clearly she plays around with her words and intonation speaks fast and then really slow xD so it’s even harder to follow her as a non native
Very intresting experiment! But there was a time where English and German of that time were still closer and similar than today. I mean the time from around 500 AD upon, both languages were more two different dialects than two languages. But than in 1066 AD Harold King of the Normans, who spoke French at that time, conquered Great Britain and brought the French and therefore the Latin language. They mixed up and simplified and the result is the English of today. Before the conquering English had got more grammar cases as today namely 5, which German has kept 4 of them until today. And also the English language had got 3 grammar genders as German has until today. Even Dutch kept 2 over this great range of decades.
@@12tanuha21 Yeah, but then we would all just sound like drunk dutch all the time in Germany. And High German is pretty much a mix of all the dialects, which is really hard to accomplish considering the countless dialects you have in the south alone (I live in the Blackforest and here ever village has its own dialect. And unless you grew up with the dialect from the neighboring village you will not understand it. Trust me, it tried all my life).
@@NachtfeuerBoth words can be used in German. The only difference is that "flauschig" refers specifically to fluffy fur or feathers, whereas "fluffig" can also be a fluffy texture of pastry for example

Comparing the words pepper and Pfeffer tells us something very important though - that we must refine our rule and consider particular contexts, if we are to understand why English /p/ corresponds to both German /f/ and /p͡f/. The pisces/fish similarity makes sense now.Pisces in English come from the 1300s. It comes from the plural of the Latin word piscis, meaning “fish.”
Just a little tip, but I would always specify if the Belgian guests are speaking Flemish (Dutch) or French. Even some Dutch people think that 'Belgian' is a language, but it's not, it's just a nationality but we usually speak either of these two (or both) languages 😁
@@Sayitlikitiz101 It is her primary language. you spotted that very well. She is from Antwerp by the way. I can hear it from her accent. Flemish is in essence the same language as Dutch not a simalar language but the exact same language. Difference is In Flanders we often chose a different word to describe the same thing. for example the word rope in Englisch: Dutch = touw Flanders = koord. Botch words however are correct in the Dutch language . Just like American English versus Britisch English. truck vs lorry for example.
I'm also American, and despite speaking Latin, I could only understand German haha I got about 50-75% of the German words, but I could only understand about 15% of the other ones

I am Dutch, why do I have the most trouble with understanding Vlaams (Belgian) 😂 It's is Dutch technically, but like German is easier for me personally to follow.

The way 🇳🇱 Karijn pronounced her name made me wondering, how the Dutch and Belgians would pronounce the name Martijn. They must be similar.🤔 I'm a rally fan 🚗 and there's a 🇧🇪 Belgian driver (confusingly a native German speaker with a French full name) who has a 🇧🇪 co-driver with that first name which the 🇫🇮 Finnish and 🇬🇧 British commentators and journalists have pronounced "Martin", as in English. I'm pretty sure that's not correct. 🙄
It's funny, I have the same problem listening to German and Dutch that I have with Spanish. I'm trying to eat some leftover chicken before I go pitch shoes in our horseshoe league, and I have to stop chewing when they speak to have a chance of understanding them. So, I basically just ate when Sophia was talking. No problems with English.
I think English speakers would be able to get some of these Dutch sentences. Note that "ij" is pronounced like ay in "say" Dat is mijn boek Sinds februari is hij ziek. Ik drink wit koffie en eet groene appels. Ik zwem in de zee. Mijn dochter bringt me water.
The 'ij', like the 'ei' and 'ui', in Dutch are sounds that do not exist in English. They also do not exist in French or German. No doubt there are languages that do have these sounds (possibly Scandinavian languages) but I know of none.
Those aren't all English words Karijn. 25% of the Dutch vocabulary are French words. French formed English, so they have a cousin living in English too.
The Dutch girl really to project her voice more... It's hard to hear what she's saying. And her accent is so unclear. I'm not Dutch but I speak it fluently and I dare say that I have a clearer accent than her!
I totally disagree, her accent is very much ABN (algemeen beschaafd nederlands) which is a term we use for a kind of neutral/general accent. When she focused less on her pronunciation she sounded a bit more natural but still very clear. I think it might be an accent you are not used to though.
She doesn't have a strong regional accent but that's not the same thing as speaking Algemeen Nederlands. Historically, Algemeen Nederlands is based on the Haarlem accent, and maybe is supposed to sound just a little bit posh. I actually think her pronunciation is kind of messy like Antones does, but I'm not sure it's because I don't think she doesn't sound western, or because she doesn't sound posh.
@@Tarquin678 It’s the other way around, Haarlem is often associated with an ABN accent because it is very neutral sounding. I go there regularly and she kind of sounds like she is from there Leiden, or maybe Utrecht. The posh accent you are referring to might be het Gooise accent. Personally I don’t like that accent much.
I guess she’s just very uncertain of herself or shy. That’s why shy mumbles a little bit. But her vocabulary and grammar ar spot on. She speak Dutch ABN. Or standard Dutch. But she’s defiantly from a more posh environment.
