Verse in question: “You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord” (Leviticus 19:28). Notice the ban is on cutting yourself for the dead, not tattooing yourself for the dead.
What about the passage, “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” -1 Corinthians 6:19-20? Is this more spiritual than a physical moral? I wonder to what extent (if any) body modifications can defile the temple that is our bodies, or if it is completely moral ethics which determine such.
@@jaaaaysselam3372 I know that much, but I don't think it solely applies to sex. Being that our body is a temple, that implies we treat our body well. Being sexually immoral is not the only way to harm your body.
We as Christians must be very careful what we teach, because we'll be held accountable for everything that we tell others. I would hesitate before answering certain questions and really seek the Holy Spirit before telling people certain things on a potentially sinful subject. Not saying that IP is wrong here, but the only reason Christians want tattoos so bad is that it's very popular in the world. God wants us to be set apart from the world - that's in both the old and the new covenants. I'd be cautious to put these on my body. My temple belongs to God. Yes, I know people won't like this answer, but there's nothing wrong with saying we must be careful and obey what the Holy Spirit says FIRST.
I can agree, there is a reason why in some places it's illegal to get a tattoo under a certain age, because if you're going to get a possible permanent mark on your skin you better be sure it's something you can live with. That's why I don't understand why some couples get tattoos of each other's names because what are you gonna do with that if you don't stay together 🤷♂️.
@Señor Why Me biblically, it kind of is. Being like the world refers literally only to adopting an anti God rebellious way of things. If you aren't trying to do that, you're not being like the world.
I agree, I really don’t think the Bible is completely against tattoos, but at the same time I would be very skeptical when getting one. A tattoo is something that is permanently engraved onto your skin which is quite hard to remove, so I will probably warn against getting them.
Id warn about the type of tattoo people get. A lot of people like gothic imagery with skulls and death etc, and a lot of people like tattoos with flowers and positive imagery.

This is balanced out by not letting our own conscience be a burden to other believers. Absolutely if you're with someone who can't stand tattoos, cover it up/don't get one. But if you're the one who can't handle it, you shouldn't burden the body of believers with your own conscience. Causing others to stumble is mostly applied to intimate settings as far as how I've read scripture, and a lot of christians with tattoos evangelize better than ones without. I'd be careful using just that verse to justify something. Restricting everyone's freedom in Christ is a dangerous thing to do.
For me is hard to harmonize that, and (with tattoos is clear) "if your right eye causes yo to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away" the sin is of the person that seduces with a tattoo, *for example* or of the person that looks, and you know... falls?
Definitely no way I could ever get tattoos. I Already struggle with independence and prideful thinking. Tattoos to make me more physical attractive would just pump up my ego more. The last thing I need is to give myself more temptation at this point my life.
@Dj akademicks , I'm grateful. As I said, I am so sensitive to my sinful nature that I don't even want to tempt the spirit of sin so I couldn't do that. If this preacher gets tats, it'll be in heaven. 😅
@@joywebster2678 It would imply there isn't anything inherently wrong with tattoos, so much as the meaning or function of the tattoos. ie in their orthodoxy it is an expression of their faith, not of legalist decree but personal conviction, same as in Isaiah 44:5. So yes, it does mean it's okay for others outside their orthodoxy across the world.
Your body is the temple of the Spirit. I know I wouldn't attend a temple with graffiti on it, will the Holy Spirit even enter yours? It's tacky and tasteless.
I got a tattoo after kicking my drug habit. It was to remind me of the evil that comes out of me when I use. What others saw was a dragon ripping out of my arm, and as I distanced myself from that life, I got tired of explaining it. Also, tattoos weren't popular then, so I got a lot of unflattering comments and other annoyances with it. I had it removed 5 years after getting it. I should've known better than to get it.
This is a personal issue for each. It is between them and God. We need to be saving our fights for things that actually affect our salvation. This does not. I had tattoos before being saved and have covered them with ones that show my faith in Christ. All of my tattoos honor Jim and remind me who I belong to. When He returns I will get a new body and they will be gone. Sharing the gospel with the lost should be our first priority because He is coming back soon and God cares more about our salvation then what tattoos we did or did not get.

Everyones forgetting about piercings? The way we dress? Also the way we cut our hair, and almost every other thing that we do everyday, all it takes is “yes I believe in god, and yes the lord is my savior” and that’s ALL you need to be saved, it’s not even the hardest thing in this world to do, they just make you think that it is.
It's a conscience issue, so one person's line won't be another's. However, if one's line is much further out than those in their life, it may be best to either not pursue the tattoo (or get it somewhere easily covered) even if it doesn't violate their own conscience so as to not become a stumbling block for those whose line is short or non-existent. That said if you're getting, say, racial slurs or pornographic tattoos, you've certainly crossed a hard line.
Your body is the temple of the Spirit. I know I wouldn't attend a temple with graffiti on it, will the Holy Spirit even enter yours? It's tacky and tasteless. Peace
@HairGreaseTBMOTH You're funny, going around commenting on my comments while judging me and trying to sling mud. You are very hypocritical and two faced, you must have tats and your conscience is burning if you even have a conscience.
That's a tricky one. I tend to lean towards Dante's view that all art is the grandchild of God (since by creating art, we reflect the creative nature that is God's image within us). So I personally would say that if your tattoo doesn't make an explicitly anti-God statement (e.g. like 'sexual promiscuity is good,' or 'hail satan,') then I would say as art it glorifies God.
It says right in the Bible that Jesus himself had a word written on the inner part of his thigh. I have a bunch of tattoos as well as two bold crosses on the top of my hands. God still loves me
Some people feel in their gut that tattoos are wrong. Others feel opposite. Both think they are receiving the answer from the Holy Spirit. The debate won't die.
Maybe the answer is that we're supposed to love each other even when we think the other side is wrong, because Jesus being our savior is more important. I mean, it'd at least be fun to see more churches try that approach.
Jesus saves ex-satanists covered in tattoos lol meanwhile pure evil pedophiles walk the earth with no tattoos. It is the SOUL of the person, not their skin.
that is why the Magisterium exists. The reason why there was only suppose to be One Church. Think of a Three-legged stool where without one it wouldn't stand. In the Catholic Sense the three-legs of truth is: Holy Scriptures (written tradition) Holy Tradition (oral tradition) Holy Magisterium (teaching/interpretive authority) All inspired and guided by God.
For me tattoos aren't a matter of whether or not the Bible prohibits, but rather whether or not my wallet does. I just haven't been able to justify the cost. Neither, have I had a need of some words or image permanently tattooed to my skin. I guess instead of tattoos my thing is scars. Scars from boating, fishing and kite-boarding. They're my battle-wounds and I'm proud of them.
Correct but I would add this.. Even if your getting a “Good tattoo” it’s cool but it goes much deeper than that. 1. Following senseless trends 2. Get a tattoo to feel accepted, cool or even “hard looking”? Dig deep into your intentions 3. Some ppl enjoy the pain of it.. it goes back hurt or trauma from the past .. look into it I’m not against tattoos just be wise in your decisions

But i still have statement to make here. As you see in Mark 5 states that a man possessed by a demon the man was certainly using a rock to drawing on his skin that kinda says that a tatto is certainly a demon possesion act
A lot of evil pedophiles have no tattoos, meanwhile loads of Christians and charitable people have many tattoos. I would prefer to judge a person for their SOUL, not their appearance. If Lucifer was more beautiful than Christ, would you go running to the devil because your eyes mislead you to thinking he was a "luxury car?" It is not your place to judge people. @@viov1975 that’s a verse taken out of context. That verse talks about sexual sin specifically. You need to find the corresponding verse that fits with your argument. It’s a big problem amongst Christians.
the explanation within judaism (at least iirc) is that that leviticus verse is specifically referring to tattooing by scarification, which is what most people getting tattooed back then would've done. now the process is so much different for tattooing that having tattoos and getting tattooed is permissible under most interpretations of jewish law, afaik.
The way I see it, is Jesus literally saves ex-satanists and even prisoners still serving time..I HIGHLY doubt Jesus judges his sheep for having pretty consented works of art on their skin. It doesn't harm anyone. Personally, I think people who think otherwise are being wrongfully judgemental and it is not your place to make a judgement especially if there is no victim.
Taking care of the temple also includes decorating it. Therefore, put some tattoos. I am just joking. My point is that you have a hidden assumption that many would argue as false. Your hidden assumption is that putting tattoos is not a good thing to do to a body.
@@retrictumrectus1010 absolutely. I would also add, that if tattoos are considered damaging the temple, then you would also have to add: earrings, being overweight, and eating unhealthy food. I mean, one could even argue that any kind of minor surgery that changes your looks, like braces, could also be considered damaging the temple.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirt, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. Im Christian and have over 30 tattoos..on one demonic etc, but the more wise I grow in Christ, the more you study deeper than jus the Levitical law…the more and more I’m convicted. It’s been a struggle of mine’s internally for about 15 years now in terms of it’s wrong or not and in what context. Initially started from hearing different things from a actual pastors and mentors on the matter. This is one debate in the world and more importantly the Body of Christ that I do not see ending.
It’s still of the world; tattoos are for people that still want the fashions of this world. No persons filled with the Holy Spirit would desire such blurring of the lines. Romans 12:2 KJV [2] And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. 1 Peter 1:13-16 KJV [13] Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; [14] As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: [15] But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; [16] Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
An argument I hear against getting tattoos is our bodies being a temple for God (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). I don’t know much about the harm tattoos do to your body if they do anything, but idk if this is a strong or weak argument against getting tattoos.
Tattoos are of paga origin. Leviticus 18:3 (NKJV) 3 According to the doings of the land of Egypt, where you dwelt, you shall not do; and according to the doings of the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you, you shall not do; nor shall you walk in their ordinances.
There's no debate on this subject if Jesus wouldn't do it, do not do it. So every time you get into a grey area and your not sure just ask yourself would Jesus do it?
So I am a youth leader and the kids wanted me to do a lesson on Satan. What about the idea of tattoos reflecting us to be more prideful? It is odd how for years people were against this and recently we have been on a different path to this. Btw I have tattoos so not knocking anyone here.
Regardless of that, Don't Tattoo your self. Theres a difference between living in Holiness and Living in religion. Living in Religion is using the Bible as justification. And living in Holiness is Doing the will of God with no iniquity.
While I don't think that the bible is against tattoos in the old *or* new covenant, I don't think Isaiah 44:5 counts because it seems like it's part of a prophecy about the coming of the Spirit at Pentecost, which is during the new covenant.
@@magnificentuniverse3085 It's referring to tattoos or self-harm as a form of ancestor worship. Taking a tattoo is fine under both covenants; so long as you don't use it for ancestor worship, idolatry etc. Not that I'm interested in tattoos myself though.
@@IamGrimalkin hmm but as IP pointed it out in tge video, the verse actually says not to cut ourselves for the dead, but doesnt say the reason why not to tatto ourselves, it simply says dont make a tattoo without a reason. It mainly was a practice of sorcery, where you bind yourself to sone god or spirit and it to you in a covenant of sorts but more like a ritual spell. Hebrews already had circumcision as their brand of ownership by/bond with YHVH.
@@Nunya_Bidness_53 I've no doubt that they have been used in such capacities, but so have many other things. The fact is that tattoos well predate the earliest written records we have preserved so we can't really know what their earliest significance was.
@@vedinthorn We know what the significance to which God objected was, ritual magic and idolatry. They serve essentially the same purpose today. If you believe something is wrong when you do it, it's wrong for you. I don't see a "right" way to do it, so I don't.
Yeah it's best that we don't, though. Let's not try justify our worldy desires but take our cross, which is abandoning certain desires. God gave us the Holy spirit and the Bible to guide us to true Christian behaviour.

As far as throwing away the old covenant. Matthew 5:17-19 "Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."
Everything related to form (like a work in the body) must be seen in the light of the content within: Is this a change in form that helps me live God deeper, or is it a neurotic ego booster?
Jimmy Akin also has a great video on this. Shows how we should reason these things out with our intellect. Tattoos ARE permissible. If you personally don't want one, fine. They are still ok morally.
How do we know that Isaiah verse is talking about tattoos? Some versions say “write *with* his hand” instead of “on his hand.” Even if we go with with “on his hand,” is there something about the Hebrew wording or the context that would lead us to conclude that this is about tattoos?
These are the kind of statements you’ll make when you ignore the scriptures to give your opinion. He said “it depends on what you get” but the Bible says, “ you should not make any cutting on your flesh for the dead” that’s one but it says nor “tattoo any marks on you” that’s another negative alternative on top of not cutting yourself for the dead. So you have 2 instructions here. One is not cutting yourself for the dead but for the tattoo is simply not doing it, it doesn’t specify wether it’s for the dead or not, but it’s generalized.

ANY DAY OF THE WEEK CAN BE THE SABBATH DAY - AND THERE IS NO OTHER REQUIREMENT THAN "REST" FOR THAT DAY "9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:" These commandments are to be upheld by the INDIVIDUAL not the nation as a whole. "Do not lie" is for the individual to uphold. "Honor thy father and thy mother" is for an individual to uphold not the nation to create 'Honor Thy Father and Thy Mother Day' celebrations. This commandment only says you can work for six days in a row but you must rest on the 7th following the sixth. NOTHING MORE. Doesn't say there is any specific day of the week you must choose to start your work week. If an individual chooses to start his work week on Monday then Sunday becomes THAT person's Sabbath day of rest (and nothing more than rest is required of him). Same if a person chooses his work week to start on Sunday then Saturday is his Sabbath day. Individuals can come together for their convenience to agree to start their work week on any specific day and have their Sabbaths coincide..... but that doesn't give any individual or group authority to decide that work week starting point for others.
Ancient Hebrews didnt have names for days in the week (like Monday etc.), they called them first day, second day...seventh day. When God says that seventh day is a Sabbath he means that special day of the week that Hebrews called the seventh day, and not the one we choose as sevent. All Jews ever and Christiand in Scriptures and beyond understood it as such.
