SPOILERS FOR ELDEN RING
So this video is more of a general take on the competitive scene, but from the point of view of someone that doesn't really play ranked modes, but still enjoy competitive games from time to time. It's also a hotspot for some of the most negative and toxic pools of gaming you can find, and it's rooted in having to deal with all different kinds of people. But on that same token, finding the right people can also mean that you'll eventually find like-minded people that you wanna be around, seeking out communities and networking with the right people, that can help you find your footing and if you're ambitious, a place in the esports world. This video isn't a cure and I know that people will disagree, that's fine. My initial objective was to see if I could spark some conversation on the topic, because I hear about the negative aspects all the time and why people quit. Again, it's important to also recognize the good sides of it which was the main objective for this video.
Chapters:
Awful Gameplay - 0:00
The Rest of the Video - 0:59
Minimally Improved Gameplay - 27:50
Notes:
- Xdefiant is okay. It might be a decent alternative for that want something more arcady than something tactical like Siege. Even then, I don't imagine it having much fuel in the tank, especially with some of the stuff coming out in June.
- Mental issues are a common element in the competitive scene. If the peer pressure and stress is only going to make it worse, then you don't need a coach or to play better, you need help.
- You don't have to like every competitive game, there's some I'm not a huge fan of, but I still look into what they do from a game design perspective.
- You can be competitive in other aspects of life. But if you disengage the thought process entirely in your gaming sessions, then you have to kill any expectations for the session and your performance.
- Very rusty with shooters at the moment. Haven't played them in a while let alone multiplayer. But it feels good to be playing them again.
- The other game I showed from time to time in the video that's like mw3 is called Combat Master. And the other two were N++ and Ultrakill.
- The movie shown is Eyes Wide Shut.
- I thought about beeping the Halo 2 and Modern Warfare 2 videos. But I felt it was important to show them unfiltered, to show that even those games had it's own levels of toxicity at the time.

your point around 16:00 brought up some memories for me that I think I can make some notes on about wanting to do better while avoiding the 'toxic' feelings when going into competitive playstyle. I typically play in a casual manner but still think "what could I do better?", but during my competitive era in Quake, I found that caring about score and result stopped mattering. The scoreboard doesn't tell the story so there is no point in having multiple accounts in games for leaderboard BS, what matters is playing better at the time it matters, and you can't expect to be the better performer if you don't practice specifics. So in short, be competitive by setting goals unrelated to scoreboards, before playing, set goals like "I need to build up my strategising" or "my awareness is good but my decision making is rending my skill useless". When you play with intention to better specific skills, the scoreboards matter even less. So once a player recognises this and chooses to focus on what they are trying to improve, the naturally toxic behaviours start to dissipate and the joy factors become more apparent. Nice vid btw

Thanks, man. And that's the thing, even in spite of your goals, your results will vary anyway due to other factors that can occur. Those numbers will gradually improve on their own as you prioritise your aim, movement and positioning.

@brokenportals exactly. And no matter how good you think you are, you will come across opponents that started the critical learning process many years before you. If losing against them gets you angry and emotional, it's just evidence that you have more to learn. You can always catch up and overcome. For example; ZenAku was a guy that played with friends and did okay, he moved overseas to pursue competition, and now he plays in the world's top 10 against people that have been pro for a couple decades already. Many top level players provide all the textbook info you will need, but so long as you apply it to your learning, there's no telling how far you can take it

Oh! one tip for people that want to grow but don't know where to start; Record and watch your matches!! Seriously! You will think back on what you were doing and thinking because you're watching your own behaviour, and it will flood you with mental notes that you will passively learn from when playing. It helps you recognise patterns **during** gameplay. DO IT!

37 years old here. There was no better age than the early 2000 for online PC games. Not only our games had mods (mods that aren't just gameplay changes as in CS2, but real TC mods) for Quake II and Quake III, but nothing beat the feeling of fire up Q3A just to have fun. After it, fire W:ET to have fun, or Quake II DDay, or Q3 URT or W:ET TCE. We had choices and no pressure to grind or be the best. Just explore the games and our own skill at our own pace.. felt more as team work than any CS2 or Valorant could ever feel (and i do have fun with CS2 and Val).

Urban Terror and Assault Cube were really fun. I've also covered Action Quake 2. Not a lot of people remember that one nowadays.

First I want to say I really enjoyed the video here's my opinion on multiplayer in general. If we go back in time to the 2000s I felt that people where playing the game and trying to improve during matches which is not the case today. nowdays people spend a lot of time in training modes watching guides optimizing their gameplay and me personally I don't want to do that. to further explain my point I'll use football, if you go play a game with randoms there is a good chance that you will have fun because most of the people don't have a field in their home so no one is optimizing their gameplay like pro players. And as you said you can't really control how people play the game, but I think pvp games should be designed to be fun first instead of competitive.

This is a great video about competitive gaming. A lot of people will complain about things like SBMM ruining their games and filling it with sweats, wishing they could just "vibe" or whatever, but lamenting the fact that they have to sweat it out as well. But if they really just wanted to chill, they'd bottom frag and SBMM would start to lower their MMR, and it would even out. It makes it very frustrating to have conversations about the topic when peolle behave that way.

Yeah, it's the one thing people don't wanna hear, but that's just the reality of it.

You pretty much just echoed everything that I do in competitive games. Turn all comms off and just play your best.

I think it's best to wait until the comms start to get toxic and you you know they wont stop. If that's the case, mute, report and enjoy the game. Going in and muting prior creates a negative assumption. It also limits the opportunity to potentially meet players you may actually vibe with and add as a friend. Either way, definitely play your best.
