"I've been working from home, but my boss wants me to come back to the office.."
If an employer wants you back in the workplace and you refuse - the short answer is YES you can be fired for that --- with ONE exception.
You may have been working remote from home or elsewhere for a long period of time - but if your employer wants to change that status and require in-office work, you have little recourse.
Here's the exception. If you have a disability or a medical condition that requires accommodation like an auto-immune disease or something similar you may be entitled to an accommodation.
Those are special cases however, so it's good to be crystal clear on the general rule that an employer CAN require you to return to the office no matter how accustomed you have become to working from home.
If you refuse to do so, they can legally terminate your employment.
So keep that in mind if you are getting called back into the workplace and want to keep your job.

Here is the exception. If you was initially hired in a remote position, for a federal government agency and you live out of state. You are not required to come into office.

This is to those who refuse to return to the office. Quit your job and go freelance. Oh that’s right, you don’t want to because that would require being fully responsible for your own health insurance, tax deductions and retirement plans. NEWSFLASH! No matter how skilled you are you’re just another number as in “EXPENDABLE.” And with all of these layoffs happening I’m sure that there are plenty of unemployed people out there ready to take your place.

I Have A Question?? Great information, I've learned a lot from you on workplace discrimination and I myself have a court date on October 31 2022 I am appealing a NYSDHR determination because the division investigator did not look at my supporting evidence in its proper context causing the determination to be based not on actual fact and I took notice that the Division investigator failed to mention about an incident and arrest caused by my employers negligence for not putting my safety first. I was an essential worker I was a medical courier I was hired as independent worker but my employer was managing every aspect of my work my employer misused his authority by making me perform duties that I never intended to as well as work 15 to 16 hours a day and up to 55 a week. I have a very important question to ask ?? Is verbal abuse and threats a form of discrimination?? I really look forward to hearing from you.
