Not having a gallbladder is, unfortunately, is a very common thing. With more and more people discovering the awesome power of the ketogenic way of eating, it's only a matter of time until someone without a gallbladder will ask, "Can I Eat Keto Without a Gallbladder?
The gallbladder stores and concentrates bile, which is used to digest fat. Since the keto diet is a high-fat diet, that question is valid, and deserves an answer.
In this video I explain the answer, and how you should approach keto without a gallbladder. It matters, but not as much as you might think.

Are you sure you are keto? Did you measure your blood glocose and ketones? Glucose should be below 80 and ketones above 2. I have a gallbladder and I can't even eat keto without serious nausea and diarrhea.

My gallbladder was removed in 2005 - I started eating LCHF/Keto in 2010. I have never looked back. I had more of the problems you talked about when I was still a sugar eater. Losing 120lbs was the answer. No issues consuming the fat.

It’s been hard.... lots of failures on this journey. I will take 10 steps forward and then 5 steps back. Every time I get an attack, it lasts days and whenever I try to eat keto foods I will throw everything up. I will literally be forced by my body to eat carbs because anything else I will have to throw up. Its been a hard journey, but God’s Grace has been keeping me going. I won’t give up. I know God will sustain me through, even when my physical body is weak, my spirit is strong.

So glad I found this video. I did a google search and every link gave this long list of do's and don'ts for being on keto without a gallbladder. It sounded much more complicated than I was looking for. I only started keto a few days ago and pretty much went full steam ahead. I had mine removed 13yrs ago and since then always had urgent diarrhea when I eat along with extreme pain. Sometimes I couldn't even make it through a meal without running to the bathroom. Anyway, i have not had a single bout of diarrhea since Monday, when I started keto. I didn't even think to look up keto without a gallbladder until I saw a different video mentioning gallbladder/liver health and then I was like OH NO. So, thank you!

I had my gallbladder removed when I was a young woman and LONG before I learned to question people in the medical profession and do my own research. I have been on Keto since 10.01.19 and am successfully eating only one meal a day. I do have a bullet coffee with butter in the morning, and then eat dinner with my family at night. So far, I haven't had a hard time of it. Thanks for the words of encouragement in your videos. =)

Dr. Berry thank you for validating this! I do Keto as a type 1 diabetic without a gallbladder and without a pancreas! I hesitated doing this diet because I had Dr's tell me that I couldn't and shouldn't ever eat a fatty diet, but I started slow and listened to my own body and worked into it over a period of 4 weeks. I still have to manage taking pancreatic enzymes for digestion and timing is everything to keep from having loose stools, but I feel better than I have in years and my overall digestive health has improved tremendously by eating this way.

Gosh your videos are the most binge worthy thing on the internet. Any question I have you somehow already have the answer. I had a gallbladder removal probably 5 1/2 years ago. I started intermittent fasting before going keto so my body was already in a fat adapting thing with a good 2 day water fast. I then started like you said adding the fat in slowly, but I found I could take more and more and it not be a issue. I cook just about anything keto friendly/low/no carb in butter or bacon. I swear the liver is a a little miraculous. I haven’t had a single issue. Maybe alittle runny stools occasionally but I had IBS day on and off for years and it was worse with a carb based diet. Anything is better than the American standard. Believe in your liver y’all! It will take care of you if you take care of it!

Thank you so much for covering this subject I had the gallbladder out 3 years ago after a stone was removed from the bile duct and a stint placed, the infection and inflammation was not going down with even the strongest IV antibiotics and so as a last resort, removed to avoid sepsis. The report after surgery showed signs of chronic inflammation and a couple of benign polyps. I take ox bile to help digest fats. I had this question about Keto because in the past a low carb diet balanced hypoglycemia and had me feeling the best ever. Great information.

Like many here, I had my gallbladder removed, nearly 30yrs ago. Until I started Keto, I had many episodes of gi issues. Since starting Keto 8 weeks ago, I’ve had 1, after eating my first solid meal following a 60 hr fast. Considering I used to have this issue nearly every time I went longer then 12 hrs with out food, I’d say Keto is a major win!!

Been there, I took 1 or 2 ox bile salt tablets after I ate for the first month or so to boost up my bile and then slowly reduced it. Simple, cheap and it works, not like my stupid gallbladder, that thing nearly killed me! I eat one meal a day in 2 small parts to get my caloric needs so fasting 22.5 hours a day most days. I love it and 70% fat is no problem just don't take too much MCT oil at one time or nothing will keep the diarrhea away!

20 yrs ago I had my gallbladder removed after it ruptured. I had been on “protein power” diet for 3 yrs. for PCOS and Metabolic syndrome.They made me leave this way of life. 10 yrs later I had ballooned to 396 lbs. I had the gastric sleeve and only dropped to 210 lbs but herniated a disc in my back and had 2 kids. So back up to 264 lbs. My TSH was elevated and ferritin only 6. So I am going to change to this way of life and my Dr will run new tests after 3 months. We are switching the family to this keto way of life. But, I am struggling a bit with the fat and the food volume for IF. But we are determined to heal our bodies and get off all processed foods.

Try taking ox bile salts after your meal to boost your bile especially if you take MCT oils. Add lots of coconut oils to your foods, avocados, olives and good mayonnaise. Also make keto breads from coconut and almond flours, eggs, ground nuts etc... (lots of good recipes) These breads sit in your system for a while which helps your digestion. Apple Cider Vinegar and keeping up your electrolytes really helps. Good luck Take care from Canada

Thank you, Dr. Berry, for your great videos. I think a key takeaway from this one is that everyone is different and you have to see what your body can and can't handle. I am one of the fortunate ones. I had my gallbladder removed back in 1990 when I was 20 years old and I have had no trouble doing keto. When I started 5 months ago my fat adaptation occurred relatively quickly and I now do OMAD without having to take any special supplements. I just have to add a very small serving of vegetable to my meals. I guess it's the tiny bit of fiber in the veg, but whatever it is, it works.

Thank you very much I do not have a gallbladder and yes I had bloating at the first week of keto plus a continuous fatigue. I was about to buy ox bile salt but I. Thought my liver would increase bile. It was just a guess I don't have any other medical proof for that until I saw your video .Now I am in my third week and I can eat one meal a day without any issue.

Hey Doc Berry! Great to see you again. Question: Can a person without a gallbladder benefit from taking a bile supplement or support? Something like ox bile or artichoke?

Had my gallbladder removed over 20 years ago, been keto - ketovore since October 2023 then went to Carnivore in January 2024 and still my body didn't like cooked fat, although my palette did lol. However, I can easily tolerate butter added to my meal just before eating or eating butter along side my meal. This I learnt from Steak&Butter Gal, now I rarely have explosive diarrhoea, eating this way has really changed my journey with my meat based high fat way of life. Still healing on Carnivore but since October 2023 to now April 2024 I have lost 15kg, off insulin and have halved my blood pressure meds and hopefully coming off them all together next month. I am going to do a few months of ketovore as really missing my veggies and see what happens.

I had my gallbladder out in January this year and went keto in July. I honestly haven't had any problems at all. I went full keto from day 1 and have been doing IF since the beginning of September and, again, no problems at all. I never even had keto flu. I suppose I'm just lucky. I used to suffer with terrible IBS but that's completely gone now and I've never felt better. Oh yes, I've also dropped 24 lbs - only another 40 to go!

I have had 10 abdominal surgeries for endometriosis- plus surgeries to remove my appendix, Gaul bladder and a hysterectomy. My surgeon told me my gaul bladder was perfectly normal (so, most likely endometriosis). I can’t take estrogen post hysterectomy due to the endometriosis (reared its ugly head immediately when I tried). Anyway, I have put on over #100 in the 15 years since my hysterectomy (I have hypothyroidism too). Just starting Keto this week. I got bile salts (heard they can help). Wish me luck!!

My Gall Bladder was removed in 2014. I was obese, had gout attacks, and my GB had already turned gangrenous. I changed my lifestyle and diet which made me lose 30 pounds; then started "no sugar" and keto diets last September 2017 which cut another 20 pounds and about 7 waist-inches off. My current speed of weight loss has slowed down, but I'm hoping to drop the final 10 to hit my ideal weight (based on BMI), but that may already be too much. 🤣 Now my blood pressure, uric acid and blood sugar are normal based on my last exam. Awesome!

@gall_crafter_works
@gall_crafter_works 3 месяца назад
@Coco-ny5wh I had no issues. It was a complicated operation so eating wasn't on mind mind. I remeber being fearful of eating so my weighg had dropped. The choice to cut out sugar came after that period. I currently do intermittent fasting now as well as avoiding sugar and carbs. I've never felt healthier in my life.

@gall_crafter_works positive go hear! My ops in two days. Super scared and don't want to get "fatter" lost a stone already and want to loose about 3 more ! Alot of people make weight lose seem not possible without a gallbladder. Happy your doing so well !
@gall_crafter_works
@gall_crafter_works 3 месяца назад
@Coco-ny5wh I believe you can do it. It felt impossible for me as well given I spent most of my life overweight. There will definitely be some adjustments as your body gets used to the changes, but take it slow. Cut the sugar when your ready, and fight all temptation HAHA. Weight loss is just one of many other heallth benefits waiting for you. I wish you well, and pray for your successful operation and good health.

Very relateable to me, i got clean i was 21, from a number of years of smoking methamphetamines. I very frequently never ate any food whatsoever, long story short took doctors 5 months and multiple 3am trips to the ER and exhausting every test the docs could think of, finally they were about to give up and stop testing until i asked for an ultrasound which didnt show anything cz they didnt check the duct. then i was the one who asked the surgeon to remove my gallbladder thinking big deal i dont need it. Haha! Although im very happy to say i eat 1 pretty heavy meal a day, sometimes i extend my fast for 2 or 3 days but i havent had any issues whatsoever. I know diarrhea very, very well. I havent had it at all since i began keto about 3 weeks ago. Just a smaller size, fairly solid movement about every other day or so. Im extremely happy with my new way of life

After watching another video on this exact subject I decided to do a search and you came up Dr. Berry and since you're one of two doctors I mostly pay attention to I was very happy I did that. Dr. Eric Berg is the other doctor I mentioned although he's not an MD but more of a nutritionalist but he says yes you can do a keto diet but you might need some bile salts which of course you can buy from him. My mom's on the Keto diet and she has been for about 2 months and she's lost around 10 lbs. She hasn't had a gallbladder for around 15 years. She also was recently diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic and does not take medicine. She's trying to lose the weight and possibly change that status by doing so. But I'm so glad I found this video by you because you were a lot more encouraging than Dr. Berg was and provided some really useful information. My mom recently changed the keto diet to a more modified keto diet in the last week or so to where she is not taking in as much fat because she wanted her body to burn her own fat not burn the fat she was taking in. So I was not surprised when you said if you don't have a gallbladder you can most certainly do this diet but you should go slower. That made a whole lot of sense and now I can pass this information on to her. You are an amazing doctor and helpful to so many people. Many many thanks!

I have been on Keto for a month now and I did have a bit of loose BM early on but corrected itself nicely. My gallbladder came off in my 20's. Today I started the carnivore phase which I intend to do for a month....I do OMAD regularly just because I am accustomed to diet, still grossly obese. No problems.we'l see how it works.

i am 73 yo and had my Gall Bladder taken out 5-6 years ago and I am doing great. Surgery was not bad and healed up fast with no scars. Dont need to take any medicines for it being gone. I am doing Keto this year and losing weight and feel no effects with my Gall Bladder gone. So i think Keto is the best thing to do with no Gall Bladder and for our other Organs (Liver and Pancreas). take care.

I've had bariatric surgery AND I don't have a gallbladder. I had an emergency gallbladder removal on Dec 23 and started full on keto on Jan 5. When I started having some digestive issues, someone recommended a probiotic multi-enzyme with ox bile and that fixed me right up. I wish I had known about keto before my gastric sleeve surgery, but it's better late than never.

Hi Dr Ken, I had my gall bladder removed in 2014. I kept to low fat stuff and no problems. I had oedema for the first time last July and figured how to fix that. Then I started Keto 1 month ago. I got past the "flu" by adjusting and then I had aches in the liver area 1 1/2 weeks ago. When I listened to this video today, I figured out why, as I a had experienced the ache a few times since I lost my gall bladder. What I am going to do is to go back on my fitbit 2 months and see what my average fat intake was, then look at this past month. I will then slowly lower my fat intake to a level where I will not get aches and painS from my liver telling me, It's trying to PRODUCE BILE AND PROCESS the fat. Thank you for this video. BTW.....Since I always watched my fat I never had the post gall bladder issues some folks have.

I see alot of questions about bile salts. A bile salts supplement can help with eating fat without a gallbladder. If it does not or the person gets diarea from the bile salts, then Betaine HCl can be taken to aid digestion of fat instead. I think idealy the liver should be relied upon for this purpose, however I can't eat all day and don't care for the bile dumps, so i supplement per my body's needs.
