Can IONIQ 5 really charge to 80% in 18 minutes?

Hyundai aren’t shy about telling us how fast IONIQ 5 charges. 10-80% in just 18 minutes? The problem is, not many people seem to see those speeds. Fast charging is dependent on the battery temperature so, since it was a lovely day, I thought I’d drive to my nearest 350kW charger and test it myself.
I use an OBD dongle and Car Scanner Pro to find out the battery temperature. Car Scanner is a fantastic app which works with many OBD dongles. The link to the one I have is here - if you purchase it using this link, I get some money so thank you in advance:

I didn't mention charge cost in the video because I have the free IONITY Premium subscription which came with the IONIQ 5. This cost me £13.51 but ordinarily IONITY is 69p/kWh which would be £37.28! There's an app called Bonnet (joinbonnet.com) which can be used for cheaper IONITY charges. That's currently 50p/kWh (so this charge session would be £27).
@dean7442
@dean7442 2 года назад
Great video, however Ionity standard charge is approaching petrol costs, if you have a 58kwh battery then that's about 166 miles of range for £37 !
@chrischild3667
@chrischild3667 2 года назад
@@dean7442 this is true, Ionity is primarily a subscription service though. Either use their passport service, your car manufacturer's subscription offering or something like Bonnet. Otherwise you pay the higher rate. Its so high, I suspect, so as to dissuade non-subscribers from using them.

I'm not familiar with the world of EV charging, but there appears to be such a complex market for apps, cards, vouchers, subscriptions etc. There are plenty of chargers these days, but I wish there was a standardised pricing strategy.
@chrischild3667
@chrischild3667 2 года назад
@@jakeallinson Almost all have contactless so you can't go wrong (any new chargers MUST be contactless by law now). There is more scope for benefits compared with fossil fuel: subscriptions, apps, tracking usage etc so that's why you see such an array of apps etc. Subscription based providers like Ionity (and soon to be open to all, Tesla) do add complication to the mix however, I agree, cos they do require an account setting up.
@TommyBoay

@@dean7442 so the real question is how often your driver profile will require those charging networks to refill your battery. The response is essential to choose the brand that is right for you (Tesla or Ionity consortium brands have heavily discounted rates on their respective networks). In my personal case, I charge less than 10% of my time on fast chargers so I really don’t care how much I pay. My average cost per km remains 4x lower than my VW Golf.

In Summer it's AMAZINGLY fast. So fast that we didn't have time to eat our food on our roadtrip last weekend before we had enough to continue. (From 20 to 80%) In Winter, the speed is roughly the same as an ID.4/Enyaq (at their best in the summer). Pretty funny how we're sad with 125kW when that's "amazing" for many other EV's. :D
@chrischild3667
@chrischild3667 2 года назад
Very true. Charged my etron 50 at 115kW the other day. Barely enough time to get the family into the service station, toilets and grab something to eat on the journey. Quicker than ICE refuelling, cos we didn't then have to make a separate trip to the nearby fossil fuel station to spend 5minutes fuelling up and paying.

Nicely done, as usual. My experiences with my I5 charging reflect yours. I've only achieved charge rates in excess of 200kwh once, on a very warm day here in the states (about 32c). Even on mild days I can't quite get it to kick up to rates higher than 125kwh. I've 2 years of free DC charging included, so no complaints. Also, I installed a level 2 charger at my house, and don't really need to visit the high speed chargers anymore unless I'm on a road trip. I'll tell you that your channel is in large part responsible for my decision to buy an EV, so thank you for that influence! I've not regretted my decision at all.

I've done a quite few longer trips (3 recharges necessary....in other words 1000+ km) Yes, on cooler days (10 degrees to 20 degrees celsius) the first charge session will not reach 220 kw...but when starting with 10% mostly 150 to 175 KW peak. However...the second charge, 2 to 3 hours later will reach quite easily the 220 KW. I've not done a longer travle with zero degrees or lower... Because the rest of the year I'll do with my home charge box and solar panels.

Great video. I think the magic temperature of the battery to achieve the high speed charge is about 24 degrees. I said the same to the Kia dealer over the ev6 that there is no chance you will get close to the claimed charge speed in winter without a battery heater to pre condition the battery witch he had to reluctantly agree with me. It doesn’t really bother me if it can’t because I rarely use high speed chargers anyway as they are both expensive to use and to quick if you have a coffee and a bite to eat while charging.

Andrew. As you know, it's all a out the battery temperature in being able to accept a higher charge. As there's no battery pre warming before charge yet, you just have to work the battery for a few miles before the expected charge. Bjorn reckons its 25 Celsius but you may as well take it to 30C, so that when you're initialising the charge it doesn't cool down too much. Just hard acceleration with max regen (obviously left hand paddle), over and over and the battery soon heats up!

Don’t normally do this, but as i had chance today, thought I’d give it a go. At an Ionity in the UK, actually arrived at 9% and left at 82%. Took photos at 10% and 80% and blow me down, it wasn’t 18mins. Didn’t have enough time to buy and finish a Big Mac! Well impressed. Temp was 21C. I agree with the comments on Video that the temp is all important. However if it takes 25 or 45 mins when it’s cold, who cares. Funnily enough tried a similar task in a Tesla 3 on a supercharger a couple of weeks ago. Took closer to 40 mins at a slightly lower temp, maybe 18C ish. Still quick enough though for most folk, however, Ionity with the free 12 month subscription and 25p, is a lot cheaper. The I5 and Tesla are both great cars though. Now 7k Miles in I5 at 70% motorways and getting 3.4Miles per kW on the Car, although spreadsheet says it’s more like 3.1. That said @ circa 4 to 5p per mile, what’s not to like compared to £2 a litre.

Had mine up to 224kW a few times recently at my local ionity-usually up to about the 60-70% SOC, barely time to grab a coffee... I only get this rate of charge if the other three stalls are empty, a model 3 started charging after me the last day, my car dropped form 220-ish to a max 125kw, this would be the ABB software load managing. Its worth mentioning at twin type chargers (capable of charging a mix of two cars connected via Chademo and/or CCS), I can get 125kW, this is limited to 50kW if a leaf or the like plugs in.

The outside temperature was... 37° C !!! My Soc was 55 %, the charge reached 227 kW during a few minutes and, after 8 minutes, 80 % Soc. I've done quite a few long trips in the two months that I now have my Ioniq5 AWD LR, and so far the charging experience has been fantastic. Whether it's the Ionity Tritium or the EnBW Alpitronic Hyperchargers, he's been shovelling electrons in at an amazin speed, basically staying above 200kW from 10-60%, then slowly tailing off to 100kW at 85% and staying above 50kW up to ~92%. I haven't looked at the clock, but jumping into an McD to grab a burger or two and shoving those into myself meant that I'd go past the 90% mark already. There's only two issues that bug me a bit.. one, at exactly 80% he's taking roughly a 1 minute break at 5kW where I didn't yet find out what's going on as it doesn't seem to be a cooling break.. and two, the battery cooling system is incredibly loud and rumbly.. when it starts, it's as noisy as a vacuum cleaner and makes the whole car vibrate more than my old petrol engine did.. so if I'm sitting in there talking to someone, that basically shoos me out of the car.

Yeah that'd right, optimal speeds at 30c. 20c or so may just heat up with the resistance to the high current and then allow the 220kw speeds. But no active heating and 0-10c the allowed current maybe so low that not enough heat is generated to get anywhere near 30c and 220kw.

The Achilles heel of modern EVs isn't the charging speed. At speeds around 100kW, the important part is rather the efficiency of the drive train and the size of the battery that determines the pace at which we can move on longer journeys. The time loss for any stop, be the charging as quick as it may, is quite massive. And that's where my gripe with the Ioniq 5 is. It just is so damn inefficient. Hence, when it comes to the actual time of arrival, it's not faster than other, slower charging vehicles. It charges faster, but needs to charge more often. So you have lots of short stops opposed to less but slightly longer stops. I think the latter is the better solution. Easier on the battery, easier on the grid, and you can actually take a piss in peace :D Also, the inconsistency at which the Ioniq 5 may or may not charge makes it very hard to properly plan a route. That's also something other vehicles do better. Other than that, I think it's a great car. Matrix LED is missing, its a bit big on the outside compared to the interior space and the solar roof is a gimmick that surely will consume more energy than it's delivering, but well, someone had to do it. Over all this car is a great addition to the EV world. But it's not for me. And no one cares, I know, but that's ok :D

Isn’t Hyundai/ Kia going to update the software so that if you input a charge point on the map it will pre heat the battery. If that’s were the case the winter charging, although maybe not as quick, would be an improvement on your earlier winter charge test.

Hi Andrew....this past weekend we took out Ionic 5 on a road trip. Indeed we got a truly fast charge on a warm day. However, on the way back yesterday it was very very hot for Oregon US (49 C). We stopped for a fast charger and it worked for about 3 min then.....nothing. We tried 5 more stations further south and with 80 mi left in battery and 200 miles to go we limped into out dealership. Slow level 2 charger worked there, but not enough to get us home. They lent us a car and the mechanics went over it today. Saw no issues but when he took it to a level 3 charger...no go. Found the error code....battery had overheated yesterday and to protect it the car stopped all DC charging. They will reset the flag but what the heck! They are looking for a more viable solution. There must be lots of these cars in hotter places...oh and 95% of chargers have no shade here in the US. Thoughts?

Great video as always. Regarding battery heater: Actually, Hyundai claimed in a presentation of the e-gmp last spring, just before they opened up for orders for 2022, that the platform has a battery heater "that will minimize the differences between charging in summer- and winter temperatures". And by all means. Ioniq 5 -22 has a heater. The problem is it only kicks in when you connect to the charger and start the charging session. So, the battery will be cold with slow charging in the beginning. In cold weather it takes 15-20 minutes for the heater to reach battery temp above 25 degrees C wich is required for ultra fast charging. The problem is: during that time you have already reached 50% SOC. I've checked this with CarScanner. The charging curve for the e-gmp ramps down rather hard at about 50% even under optimal conditions. So you will never experience the really fast charging under these circumstances. As the car already have the heater, this would suggest that a SW-update would would be enough for allowing preconditioning of the battery. Either manually 15 minutes or so ahead of your planned charging stop, or like with Tesla start battery pre-heating automatically if you are using the nav. Such update has also been confirmed by Hyundai both in Norway and in Sweden during the winter in e-mail to more than frustrated Ioniq 5 buyers. But during the last 4 months Hyundai has been completely quiet regarding this. The last message from Hyundai regarding this (that I've seen) is that they can't communicate any news regarding this issue as "nothing is yet carved in stone". Actually i know that in Norway more than a few in certain user forums are evaluating the possibility for legal action. Apparently (can't confirm this) Hyundai USA will update already sold -22 cars with this feature...

Yes, they need to put an asterisk! Still with the battery heater, they need time to get the right condition. If you start a low SOC too close to the charger, there's not enough time to precondition. They still need an asterisk about this. Just like you started fairly low, and the battery only increased to 21 °C from driving. If you had a longer drive, temperature would probably be higher, and you might shave the seconds to go under 18 minutes. Then there is a question about rounding for SOC. Where at 10% did you start? You measured to the lower end of 80%.
@MrEV
