It occurs to me that this is why folks like Mick find folks like Dan. You can see Mick's eyes glazing over on the technical stuff, while Dan's light up. But at the end of the day, with them in the same room, Mick can hit '8' on his switcher and know exactly what tone he's going to get, and then they play. It's perfect!

Hopefully, this does not fool those of you with mental disability into wasting time and money on a product that ultimately will not work for you. If DOS 6.2 Manuals are chronically soporific, it could be a symptom of underlying physical issues, which may preclude adequacy in certain, seemingly mundane skills. YMMV, I recently lernt why I have trouble with some strangely disparate things, and right at the area that the neurological testing indicated, the MRI showed the white matter deficit thing. Since I didn't get this testing done in the Sixties, they are now putting me through additional senility testing crap, but if I am declining from age that is just a bonus. Any way give it a try if you do the pedal board thing. I don't do any switching whatever, but then I hardly do "music" either.

@PFDarkside

@@ralvknights in all seriousness, 19u rack is just a housing, tone comes from the things you put inside it. A lot of the issues from the rack era are being revisited now with everyone’s massive pedalboards and wanting Wet/Dry, Wet/Dry/Wet, MIDI, etc. Dan has addressed some of the issues with his Humdinger, Wetter Box, G2/G3... IMO, digital preamps (especially from the early 90’s) will never hold up. A lot of those multi effect boxes had to shuffle processor power and had subpar A/D and D/A converters. However the Mesa rack power amps are high headroom amps with huge dynamics. The 2290 is a classic tone that has more analog componentry than digital. I’m curious to see where Mick goes with it, I imagine he’ll have a stereo reverb as well and maybe a big wet/dry/wet sound? Also, I love the idea of racking pedals away from the front of the stage, if I was a touring musician I’d do that. Since I play at home a few pedals on the floor is good for me. :)

@@PFDarkside Thank u for sharing. I keep learning from musicians that share ideas, just like you did. Our brains have to dwell with lots of learning steep hills sometimes. I have acquire a taste for pedal searching, testing, still it has serve me well. The practicality issue of playing live and even recording with comfort is an important part of the equation of playing to our full potential. I love digital delays and have learn not to build stereotypes regarding gear. I was merely pointing at the sounds that i heard in the 90s.. i am enjoying the new technologies in sound.. pedals have dynamics in many types of fxs. A classic example of a show I would probably never have even thought to ask for, but incredibly happy to have the opportunity to watch now you've made it. And a very good job I think you did do. I also had the "Mick realisation" about halfway through that hey wait a minute, how much can these three pedals do? Everything? Hmm maybe this DIMI stuff is worth it after all. What a good job Big Tomato as done with those automatic pedals, starting with the two effects almost everyone uses and is also the most picky about the most of the time. Really good use case for all those features. When I first saw them I thought "yeah they do cool stuff but it comes with so much other stuff I don't need" but honestly looking at them, I think every bit I thought was flashy gubbins is actually more like yeah well if you want to be able to do this well then it's actually mostly necessary, and then they just went the extra part of well since it has to be there, might as well make it as good as possible to. Respect from me.

YES!!! You did it! The loop switcher (and MIDI) show that I asked for a bit ago! I definitely understood why it would be a difficult show to do, not for the content (obviously) but because they didn't want it to come off like an advertisement - well BRAVO! it's great, and is another in a long line of excellent educational dives into specific gear, to gain deeper understanding of the functions and potential applications. This also serves as a touchstone to share with people, especially if they have questions, or are misinformed about switchers and MIDI, to help nicely expand their gear arsenal. You knocked this out of the park, too - condensed with some great info, especially for those just diving in. I have had a G2 for a while now, and while it has been a path of discovery, I knew any serious questions, confusion, or conundrums I encountered, would be answered by GigRig's excellent support - but that said, there are things explained in this video, that could a bit more rapidly advance someone's understanding which is great. I know many TPS regulars have been hoping for this show. Great Job, guys!

Great show guys. “You put a plectrum in like this” I love it. Mick I encourage you to take on MIDI. The learning curve can be somewhat steep at first but once you understand the basic concepts it gets easier. It is incredibly useful in many live and studio applications. Being able to tap one switch on your G3 and have it switch your automatone preamp and delay simultaneously to the presets you want and turn on their loops then with another back to your clean tone is a huge benefit at a gig. If you ever venture into synths or even loopers and drum sequencers, MIDI can control them and sync them to a clock. The list goes on. All very useful. Hope you guys had a nice, restful break. Cheers and Happy New Year.

Thank you Mick and Dan for taking the time to put out this video. Very timely for me, I just sold my Fractal FX8 and am rebuilding my pedalboard and want to use midi controlled presets on a couple of Strymon, Eventide, and Source Audio pedals. I will be using a recently acquired G2 to control my pedals and although the G2 will be different than the G3 my guess is that it will be similar. Cheers to you both and a great 2021! Jim

I really enjoyed this video. It was really good watching Dan teach Mick the way the G3 works for the benefits of us at home. So many of your videos make so much more sense to me now. Also, the sounds you both get from those pedals is amazing! Keep up the good work guys!

I agree with Mick almost completely. I have a few pedals that can take midi, but I love to dial in the sounds and see what I am actually playing. I am about to venture into midi because I recently purchased a Bliss Factory and want to use more presets and sync it with my DD-500 for a few songs. like Mick suggested, it would be great if either of these pedals knobs or switches actually moved with the midi switching. The automatone CBA pedals open up the world of presets and tweekability to recreate studio performances for any live venue and make on the spot adjustments. Happy New Year to all!

Great show! I'm patiently awaiting the artival of my G3, it shipped Dec.10 and is hung-up in a very congested and Covid affected US Postal System. This show provided lots of food for thought as I continue to plan the new board build. Great tone and playing guys. Cheers and Happy New Year!

Massively helpful video, I’m definitely in the Mick camp when it comes to menu diving, so MIDI has always baffled me. But it genuinely looks like one can dip a toe into the MIDI water, just to recall some pedal presets, without too much hassle. Excellent. Also, when Mick was playing with the simple combo of a couple of drives in a preset and kicked on the reverb as stomp, then changed preset and the reverb went off I had a facepalm moment. Of course it goes off, you’ve kicked on another preset, so I started considering how presets might need versions with/without certain pedals... then Dan introduced sticky stomp, OH YES!!! I’m definitely in the market for a switcher at some point and aside from the many things a G3 can do, that is a beauty of a feature! Great video guys. Happy New Year :-)

Hi guys. I just wanted to congratulate you on presenting a subject,which for many guitarists is completely alien, in a way that may have produced a few light bulb moments for those people. I loved it because it showed the capabilities of G3 in context too.

I stayed away from midi pedals for the same reasons, too many menus and too much tweaking involved. But then I purchased a Source Audio Collider, a Strymon Möbius, and a GigRig G2... Amazing!!! I eliminated 7 pedals on my board and replaced them with 2. (Plus my 6 other non-midi drive pedals, comp, pog, wah....) I have pre-set for every song in every set. It's a game changer. My tone has never been better plus no more tap dancing. The Möbius took a few minutes to learn. The Collider is so easy to use and program. I had some issues with the midi programming in relation to communicating with the G2, but the support team at GigRig was amazing, they set up a FaceTime chat and spent 90 minutes with me tweaking and figuring out the issues I was having. I'm glad I took a leap of faith, I would never go back from having some midi pedals on my board. Cheers : )

Digital control of pure analog sound tools is actually quite exciting, from the Chase Bliss pedals to Hook amps and beyond. What times we live in. Also a very educational vid as I am a new G3 Atom owner. I am still pondering how to make an expression pedal work as a non-tone sucking volume pedal in a generic way though. Back to the manual :).
