It’s a bit difficult to compare the power and skill of prequel and OT force users. The duels were portrayed so differently in each era because of the lack of technology during the OT.

Dooku is kind of Obi-wan's perfect counter since the forms that Kenobi mastered were both torn apart by Makashi and Dooku was THE master of Makashi.

I like how two of Obi-Wan's biggest losses were both to Dooku. I swear that old man could fight with vicious intent. Lol.

You kept mentioning him not reacting to satine dying but ignored the fact that he lashed out in anger against Maul when he taunted the fact he killed Jinn with him even mentioning that his anger had unbalanced him. So he definitely has the trigger points to become unbalanced just like Luke does

Prime Darth Plagueis vs Yoda is interesting. Considering if he defeated Sidious Yoda would have had to face him

Luke in ROTJ was stated to be equal to Vader in terms of dueling when they clashed. Vader had mastered all 7 forms of lightsaber combat and when Luke tapped into the darkside was able to overwhelm him. ROTJ Luke >= ROTJ Vader > ROTS Obi wan. Luke also pulled a star destroyer out of orbit in the comics post ROTJ.

Before watching this video, I'd say Obi Wan in this scenario would win comfortably. Luke in ROTJ compared to Anakin in ROTS is less experienced and weaker. He's also less aggressive with his fighting style and I think that makes Luke more predictable to read.

It's the classic scenario of hardwork vs talent, and the saying goes: "hardwork beats talent"; with that logic in mind, Obi beats Luke. Obi is a veteran of wars and trained in the jedi council. If Luke had that same training and experience, it is a different outcome.

Bear in mind, Luke was 23 years old in ROTJ whereas Obi-Wan was in his mid thirties in ROTS, so I think Obi-Wan would win. Obi-Wan managed to beat Maul when he was 25 years old, so even at a comperable age to ROTJ Luke it's a tough call. However, Luke cleary has much more potential, so given enough time, he would eventually outpace Obi-Wan.

I fully agree with this assessment. I think no matter the time though obi wan would always out skill Luke in lightsaber combat due to his formal training at the temple, where as Luke had limited training compared to other Jedis. though with the force Luke for sure would win

One thing that could also give Obi Wan an edge- Obi Wan trained for years with Anakin, and a lot of Luke’s style was learned in active combat against Vader. While Anakin and Vaders style weren’t identical, I think they were similar enough that Obi Wan would be much more comfortable with Luke’s style than the other way around.

From the movies we have, this is the best comparison of the two, but it's still not a fair fight for Luke. Obi-Wan is significantly more experienced. But I watched the original trilogy a few days ago for the first time in many years and just had to smile at how much Luke had advanced between V and VI. It was like a warm reminder of why I loved playing as Luke in BF II. He's so cold in ROTJ. The OT really is at it's base, a story about the progression of Luke from a nobody to the galaxy's hero and that's so cool.

Its been said that Obi-Wan was the only one who could beat General Grievous in Revenge of the Sith. I'm not sure how true that actually is, so I propose a few videos of who is more powerful featuring General Grievous vs various Jedi like Yoda, Anakin, Windu, Luke, etc.

Yeah I agree 100% with your reasoning. Obi Wan trained from his youth and was a veteran of a galactic war that lasted three years with numerous duels against some of the strongest dark side users (Maul, Savage, Ventress, Dooku and Vader to name a few), there's no way Luke can beat that kind of experience.

Not really a fair comparison due to Luke's lack of training. He had bits and pieces from Ben and only a few months at most with Yoda, the rest he picked up on his own. Yet Yoda and Ben sent him off to confront not only Vader but the Emperor as well.. with very little training .. mindboggling when you consider they together wouldn't do it let alone by themselves. So Luke is obviously very raw and very powerful.

I always thought Luke wasn't up to scale in terms of combat with a lot of other Star Wars characters specifically because of the fight choreography in the main trilogy. I feel as though that if we could see a lightsaber duel with Luke, with prequel trilogy filmmaking techniques, he would come off as way more powerful.

Nice to see an old-style video back. Obi-Wan would be way too prepared to deal with raw power (Maul, Dooku, Ventress, & all the sparring matches with other Jedi Masters), let alone another Skywalker. Especially one that others say is like his father. I give Luke about two years of intense training and experience before he could even surprise Obi-Wan.

I would say in kenobis defence about his power, while obviously potential not near to Luke (not trying to say it is). He is more naturally powerful and gifted then made out. He's like a dyslexic jedi meaning, a dyslexic person's iq is naturally higher, but have difficulty learning in conventional manner, or just have to put in more effort. I see kenobi like this, he matched a force push with anakin, in kenobi, displayed some incredible feats of power towards the end. The dooku push is used to discredit him, but I feel like palps had something to do with that

It would be a close fight no doubt but I also feel the reason why they are fighting plays into who would wins, for example... If it's for morals and what's right and off of emotion and passion then 💚LUKE however if it's off of a more technical and controlled and respected battle it's 🔵OBI

I think that Obi Wan wins if he does the opposite of what he did facing Anakin. I think that if he does any kind of taunting, Luke would unleash his full potential with a much greater level of control than Anakin did. Any kind of emotional edge is going to make Luke far more dangerous. I also believe that Anakin certainly SHOULD have won on Mustafar, but held back for the thrill of the fight and out of pride, eventually allowing himself to be exploited. Luke, I believe, would not make such a mistake. BUT, if Obi-Wan approached the battle as he should and remains stoic, I think he gets the win. Love the content. These are the conversations I'm here for.

In the Kenobi show there was actually gonna be a scene where Obi wan fights Luke on Mustafar just like he fought Vader but they scraped it for some reason.

Even though its hard to tell with the difference in quality of fights from prequels and OT, I always got the impression Luke was more of a "force" jedi rather then being too into combat, and considering how much more experianced obi-wan is in actual lightsaber duels, I think he'd win

Based on who Luke was in Return of the Jedi definitely Luke. But in Disney’s version they would be in the middle of a duel and Reeva, or Rey would probably defeat them both by blinking or something else really stupid.

The other factor is that while Luke did have his father's hot temper, he had more control over his emotions than his father did at his age. After all, he came close to losing control to his rage, but ultimately pulled himself back towards sanity, whereas his father had failed that test time and time again.

I always had the sense that Vader was holding back against Luke during both their duels, more so in the second duel, so I wouldn't count ROTS Obi out on this particular match up, especially since Luke was nowhere near the zenith of his potential by ROTJ. Obi's got lots and lots of experience from the Clone Wars, and really the only person ROTS Obi lost to was Dooku, and in that case there were odd circumstances surrounding that loss.

In ROTS novelization, when Anakin & Obi were captured and brought to Grievous, Obi-Wan was able to achieve a state of Oneness with the Force very easily and was able to pierce through the darkness clouding the Force and sink into the pure Light. Last time I checked, Yoda and Mace were not able to do that and kept mentioning during TCW that the Jedi’s ability to use the Force had diminished bc of the darkness growing and they couldn’t get through it. I’m not saying he’s more powerful than Yoda bc he’s not but I’m just saying I think that means we can stop talking about Obi being a weak undisciplined youngling because that does not stick 20 years later. His connection to the Force and purity in the Light especially is very deep. Potential does not equal power.

Darth Vader was a monster whose mere presence would make a force user tremble and wiped the floor with powerful jedi - Obi Wan beat his ass TWICE! General Grievous took the lives of many Jedi (sometimes multiple at the same time) and had 4 arms with jedi combat training - Obi Wan solod his ass I think we all know who the real beast of Star Wars has always been. The guy is amazing!

I think if Luke was forced to battle with just force abilities, I think he can be creative and well-mannered(like a jedi he always wanted to be), not causing unnessesary harm, as defense and protection, like a football player can't reach him if the player going in for a mutal consent tackle, his actions-per-minute is fast, techniqual application will vary, yet don't underrate his possibilities. I think neither would harm each other normally.

Mismatch, Luke was recently knighted while Obi-Wan was the third strongest Jedi Master in the Council after Yoda and Mace. Mandalorian Luke is either an experienced Jedi knight or newly appointed Master judging by the time line 10 ABY compared to the noob ROTJ version of Luke.

Would love to see some theories on some 2v1 battles. Like we know Luke would’ve beaten ventress and grievous on their own but when if he had to fight them at the same time? Same for Anakin. Idk I just think that would be something interesting to explore as well

I agree but if there’s rocks around I think luke would pummel him with them especially if he used the dark side and was in a state of anger. If Luke fought obi wan for Vader in the kenobi finale Luke wins mid-high diff. Vader lost because he got caught lacking and gave into his rage which made all his strikes predictable

I refused to believe that Obi Wan, famously played by Ewan McGregor, lost a Satine until I looked it up. Ewan McGregor’s characters literally cannot hang onto a Satine without them dying (Moulin Rouge).

This is very much an argument that comes up a lot! Potential vs Training I’ve always Luke is immensely skilled for his age and relative lack of proper training and experience. I put at a power and skill level compatible to Obi Wan himself around the time period of Attack Of The Clones/early clone wars. ROTS Obi Wan is a completely different animal. He simply is more skilled and experienced with the lightsaber and Luke would be defeated albeit after very likely putting up an impressive fight.

There’s like 2 versions of Obi-Wan. A ‘Base’ Obi-Wan, and a ‘channeling the living force’ Obi-Wan in which he’s in a sort of flow state, or ‘in the zone’ so to speak. The version of Obi-Wan that beat Legends Grevious using all 4 lightsabers, the version that beat Vader on Mustafar in both continuities, the one that beat Vader in Kenobi in canon. I believe that this version of Obi-Wan can beat RotJ Luke despite Luke having a massive raw power advantage due to scaling somewhat around RotJ Vader who’s Vader at his peak (while Dark Side amped). Luke wouldn’t fall to the Dark Side against Obi-Wan, and Obi-WAN’s ‘living force’ amp literally defies fate as it was stated that the force showed in every possible timeline that Obi Wan lost but he won the fight anyways, changing fate itself. Granted there’s a limit but the Vader tier characters don’t surpass said limit

This is basically the same situation with Anakin he wasn't experienced enough but at least Anakin had like a decade of training while Luke only had 2 to 3 years of training

George Lucas has stated in the past that Luke Skywalker at his peak as grandmaster Luke Skywalker is was forever, will be the most powerful Jedi that ever existed in the Star Wars universe.

I think you're right, but partly also because they are both light side oriented in those movies. Regardless of what got them into the fight, their ultimate goal would be peace. They'd be fighting where a stalemate is a win.

Anakin force potential ceiling was significantly higher than obi-won along with Luke as he inherited the chosen one potential when his father fell to the dark side. However with Obi-won I believe it's said he is supposed to have the lowest Force potential in the entire Jedi order, and yet because of his determination, patience and self control he over came any odds he had and became one of the most respected Jedi

I’m surprised you think that it would be that close, peak Obi Wan has stood with and beaten many of the best fighters at THEIR best who weren’t (usually) holding back, although arguably Dooku wasn’t trying to kill him? Obi beat the Chosen One whilst infuriated plus Grievous who had easily beaten numerous Jedi. Luke at Mando season 2would surely be closer but even then, how battle (Sith) hardened was Luke even then? Would love to see more Luke in Legends stuff made Canon. Good stuff Theory! 🫶

Luke and Anakin are almost one in the same, impulsive and acting on their emotions I think the only reason why Luke doesn’t give in as easily is because his life hasn’t had as many stressful encounters, nor much manipulation like Anakin did Anakin lost his mother to the tuskens, grew up as a slave, was incredibly arrogant due to his title of the chosen one and overconfidence in his abilities , watch his padawan be hunted down by essentially his family with her being accused of murder and watch her defection from the Jedi order which made him grow more sensitive over his attachments And then palpatine’s manipulation during his entire life as a Jedi and the fear his wife was gonna die And always feeling the Jedi didn’t trust him or were against him Luke had stressful situations too tho, he lost his aunt and uncle to the empire, watched his mentor Obi wan die at the hands of Vader, lost a hand to his own father out of impulsiveness and desire to save his friends, and had to struggle with the revelation that Vader was his father as well as somewhat struggle with palpatine’s manipulation but he didn’t have the chance to embed himself into Luke’s life unlike Anakin Luke went through a lot less and so he was able to resist easier

Some points of clarification; I would say that everyone (or at least everyone with enough raw Force ability to have been inducted into the Jedi Order before the Clone Wars) has huge potential, limited only by their imagination and determination. However some people, such as the Skywalker family have a *huge* amount of raw talent/latent Force ability. So yes, Obi-wan did not have much raw talent/latent ability, but due with his discipline and determination and his ideals, he was able to attain a huge amount of skill in the Force. And as for Luke somehow gaining the upper hand through his emotions if provoked by Obi-wan; that didn't work out so well for his dad, now did it, lol 😅? That's precisely how Obi-wan defeated Anakin in ROTS; he provoked him into losing control. His power in the Force (while it was unleashed via his strong emotions) was no match for Obi-wan's skill and control. I don't think that would be any different for Luke. Aside from the fact that I think Luke has at least a bit more control than his father. He only really lost control so much because he wasn't a Jedi for very long. Anakin was a Jedi since he was 11 years old, and he still never really gained much control over his emotions. By ROTJ Luke had mastered his emotions pretty well, and only lost control when faced by his father and Darth Sidious. Both *very* powerful masters of the Dark Side. And Sidious was a master of manipulation. So I really don't think that would be a factor in a fight with Obi-wan 🤷‍♂. And I'd also say that Vader really wasn't giving much effort at all in the ROTJ fight. We saw him let loose in the previous film (although I think he was holding back even then, just toying with--and testing--his son). By that time in ROTJ, he was in a weird headspace, with Luke starting to get through to him. And he still had no wish to kill Luke, so I think he had kind of given up by then. He probably figured it would be a poetic end to die at his son's hand. In telling Luke that it was "too late for me now", I think he was expressing remorse in his actions and disbelief that he could be redeemed. He may have even been planning to let Luke kill him and become Sidious's new apprentice. He likely figured that was the only path open to him at that point. I don't think he felt like he deserved to live on. Maybe he even figured Luke might one day defeat Sidious 🤷‍♂.

I don't think it would matter either if Luke was faster or stronger, obi wan has so much experience in different battles and fighting styles, that's why he's a old school bad ass master

I agree with all of this. Obiwan was known to be lacking as far as force sensitivity goes but his determination and dedication allowed him to climb to the very top of Jedi masters. Obi is the One.

I would love if you could do Valkorian vs Darth Sidious one day

Its hard to see Luke's skills when dueling because the prequels have such amazing lightsaber duels and in the originals the duels don't flow nearly as well, and there not flashy because of technology back then.

Theory . Start doing hour long what if videos. Say a video where Luke time travels to the high republic era . Or even goes to the old republic and meets a younger yoda. Would luke be more powerful than every force being back then?

I think this is pretty accurate. And I am 100% a luke fanboy. I do think legends Luke was only a year away from being able to make short work of kenobi. I am less aware of how quickly cannon luke progresses after Endor. I find the name of the forest moon to be funny for having the trilogy end on endor
