Can't get my hose off the spigot: how to remove a stuck water hose from spigot

When it comes to winter, it always recommended to remove the water hose from the spigot to prevent freeze damage. Sometimes the hose get really stuck! The first part of our solution was PB Blaster which you can find on amazon:
Blaster 16-PB Penetrating Catalyst - 11 oz.
amzn.to/3KHJz78
B'laster 16-PB Penetrating Catalyst 11-Ounces (2 Cans)
www.amazon.com/Blaster-16-PB-...
Amazon Basics Heavy-Duty Adjustable Straight Pipe Wrench, 14-inch
amzn.to/3nYqUdg
The best success we've had is to spray on the threads and let it sit for a couple hours or even over night. Giving it some time to penetrate the gunk build up is best.
A plumbers wrench or pipe wrench gave us the extra heft we needed to finally break the water hose threads free from the water spigot. Sometime dirt and small gravel can lock that hose bib and hose like cement. The water faucet isn't designed for such interference. To remove the garden hose from its iron grip on the water faucet, let the PB blaster do its work! Before you know it spigot and hose will finally release!

I just got home from Harbor Freight with a purchase of a saw kit which I was going to use many say that worked for them. I've seen your method someone else did but people were saying it didn't work for them. I was feeling so helpless. Got a quote diagnosis $99, to actually get the bib off $333, and if that didn't work $1,000 for water main repair 😢. I just couldn't believe it. As I got my saw ready to just handle it myself I needed to look at a video one more time to see how to do it then I came across your video. I felt a vibe that said just do it. So I jump back in the car and go to home depot to get this spray, also went ahead and got the plumber wrench too and OMG it really worked in seconds. I had a lot of hard water buildup when I took the hose off. I thought I needed a new washer for hose but after getting a lot of hard water out no more leaking. Sorry so long but I feel so accomplished and relieved that I can move on and didn't get hit hard financially. It was so stressful over a leaking hose. Thank you so very much

Hey Crystal, Stories like yours are our F A V O R I T E ! Estimates like what you received, while comprehensive, are sadly paid out by too many who just throw up their hands! Way to go and believe that just maybe you could DIY it yourself! I hope your efforts and SUCCESS inspire others to try. Not every attempt goes so well, but more often than not people really can do it (and enjoy the accomplishment ) - much more than they might first think! Way to go! Capitalize on your confidence keep trying new fixes. You can save a small fortune and self-confidence helps in many other areas on top of that! Thx for watching and sharing your story! BTW - we have 400+ videos on our channel. And if you can find fixes here, somebody has a helpful out there on the web.

This was the video! I used PB Blaster, and a little bit of Liquid Wrench and WD-40. Sprayed the PB Blaster first and waited for 15 mins and after that didn’t work I sprayed it again with a combo of the PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench, and WD-40 and waited for another 35 mins (because it was stuck tight!) and once it sat for that time period I actually used two giant crescent wrenches to get it off, as that’s what I had from my dad. One crescent wrench was on the base, aka the spigot, to hold it in place, the other was used to turn the hose itself, and all it took was one quarter turn, not even, and it loosened right up and I was able to twist it by hand right off! THANK YOU!!! Now we can replace this hose with one that has no holes in it! New subscriber right here!

Great solution! I have had the same thing happen in the past and figured out how to keep the hose from getting stuck. Thanks very much for this. Had pretty much the exact same problem and followed your advice with pretty much the exact same outcome. Only difference is that I used WD40 which I had on hand. Worked after waiting about 15 minutes. Also I followed the advice provided by several other commenters here: to prevent too much torque to the main line, I used a second wrench to grip the faucet itself.

Excellent video! For a future of trouble free threaded hose to bib connections, do this: Buy a large tube of dielectric grease ( or plumbers oring seal grease) and liberally coat the threads of the hose and the bib. Thinking long term, do you plan on taking the time to go and get the pipe wrench every time you attach the hose? After buggering the hose fitting with sharp burrs,you won't be inclined to attach the hose with your bare hands.They have adjustable wrenches for use on hexagonal fittings. The right tool for this job.

The PB Blaster worked to get the frozen nozzle off the hose however the PB Blaster would work on the hose froze to the faucet. What is the problem is the two metals freeze together. I have not figured out how to get the hose off the faucet with grinder the female end of the hose down. What I did was use Teflon tape to end this problem.

@Housebarons
@Housebarons 2 года назад
Hey Laurie, I didn’t want the water to freeze in the hose and end up freezing the faucet, that splitting and causing a bad water leak in the house. So by cutting the hose off, it would be a way to let the water drain from the spigot before freezing. - as winter was fast approaching. The in spring, I would worry about getting the hose off the spigot when temps were above freezing. Thx for watching!

My hose is frozen to the faucet and the nozzle was froze to the hose also. I sprayed carburetor cleaner on the hose/nozzle connection and after a few minutes I was able to screw the once frozen nozzle off the hose. I have been spraying the cleaner on the hose/faucet connection for a few days and will try to loosen the connection. If this doesn't work, I'll get the PB Blaster, I try to use what I have on hand first.

Put a wrench on the spigot to torque in the opposite direction you are turning the pipe wrench or you could damage the feed pipe. ALSO, before you put the hose back on the spigot in the spring, coat all the threads with silicone grease. When you buy a new hose, get one with a plastic coupler...!!!

Is it safe to spray my spigot with that product before I attach my hose so when I go to remove it it will not be stuck? Or is there a product like WD40 or something that I could spray on there so this does not happen. All 3 spigots at my home have hoses stuck to it and I'm just not strong enough to get it off and I'm not strong enough to even saw it off so now I'm stuck in the mud waiting for someone to come help me. I just want to prevent this from happening again.
@Housebarons
@Housebarons Год назад
Hey Sarah, Good idea. I will look into it . There are items to keep bolts from seizing on cars etc. But I’m not sure you’d want that on a hose that you might use for a garden. So you need to determine if your hose needs to be people-safe or do you just use it for watering flowers/ grass. If so then Wd-40 might do the job for awhile. One thing that might also help would be to take the hose off and on occasionally… that should help keep it loosened up as well. A vegetable oil might help… but long term, that might attract bugs. Just have to Tues trial and error a bit. Thx for watching.

And here I've been trying WD40 and All-in-One Oil, just making matters worse. I have some PB blaster in my trunk right now and gonna give it a shot. Hope I can pull off a miracle with my adjustable wrench and a pipe on the end (as I don't have access to a pipe wrench). Tricky part is that the water pipe goes through the wall and it feels like its connected to a PEX line that isn't anchored on the inside of the basement, so when I try to turn the hose end the whole bibb turns with it...even if I try to hold the bibb in place with vice grips. I don't have access to the basement and just attempting this for a friend. Wish me luck. I wont go whole hog because of the unanchored bibb. Worse comes to worse, we'll await access to the interior and secure the inside so the whole valve doesn't rotate with a turn of the wrench. Lol

I made the mistake of using a lot of it on a garden hose and it ran off onto my grass and killed it. How do I get my grass to grow again?? 😭
@Housebarons
@Housebarons 4 месяца назад
Grass is pretty resilient - it will come back. Maybe scrape the top 1 inch of the dirt up and discard. Sprinkle over the dirt area a couple of handfulls of grass seed w) maybe a half inch of dirt on top of the seed. Keep soil moist / don’t let it dry out. - for 2 weeks and the new grass with be growing by then. OR just scrape away the contaminated soil and let the existing grass gradually take over the dirt patch. It won’t take long- especially in springtime. Thx for watching!

My problem is that my spigot is turning at the same time so I can't do that
@JohnBlakeJr
@JohnBlakeJr 7 месяцев назад
That wrench can break the soldering and the entire spigot could have come off from the copper water pipe. Cutting it off is another way and one I’m going to try instead of that penetrating spray.

I was about to go to the store and get that corrosion remover because it was really really stuck. I tried to remove it again using that huge monkey wrench when I accidentally turned on the water. And it loosened and I was able to unscrew it. A little water was enough to loosen it.

I tried this method didnt work for my problematic hose.....I ended up using a hack saw (cut a groove into the metal part of hose, on faucet, put a flat head screwdriver into groove, a little wiggle left to right) presto came right off.....took me 5 minutes.....make sure not too cut too deep and mess up the faucet grooves

Not working for me unfortunately this Arizona water is HARD too much calcium build up. Tried picking at it with a scribe but no luck.
@geloradananrlyeh8495
@geloradananrlyeh8495 11 месяцев назад
I wrapped mine at the joint with a folded paper towel, and soaked it in vinegar. The vinegar is mild acetic acid, and it can slowly dissolve mineral deposits. This works great if you can get it to penetrate into the pipe threads, and if the problem is calcium build-up. It might take several tries to dissolve enough to get the hose fitting loose.

Trick is to use VINEGAR. Wrap a towel around it and soak the towel with vinegar. Let sit for 10 min or so. Try. Repeat if necessary. Stay away from using PB Blaster , WD40 or any penetrating oils or petroleum based products. IF they work, all they are doing is loosening the corrosion. That may be ok when taking apart nuts and bolts but for this it will be like this guy and having to use a monkey wrench, which probably would have done the trick without the BP. So the all the corrosion is still in between the metals. Using vinegar actually EATS that corrosion. Plus. A minor thing but still. PB and WD will leave it slick and slippery. The need to wipe it off to the point you can grip onto it. might be too slick to the point you need that monkey wrench or adjustable wrench. Many people don't even have that adjustable wrench. So using vinegar does not need to dry, can even be still wet, when getting a grip. So the people without tools can still take the hose off.

You're using the pipe wrench all wrong. Open the jaw on the wrench and make sure the the part of jaw without the teeth is in contact with the nut and then tighten the jaw. This way you're not squeezing the nut onto the spigot. Channel lock pliers work just as well as curved jaw locking pliers. The key is not to squeeze the connector.

WD-40 is not the same and is not a long term lubricant. They do have a WD-40 which will busy through a rusted piece like I've never seen, but the Blaster is what I use for maintenance around the house.
@mrpurpleman9698
@mrpurpleman9698 Год назад
WD40 has been used to loosen bolts, nuts and screws for decades so its worth a shot and imo feels like it does a similar job.
@mrpurpleman9698
@mrpurpleman9698 Год назад
Just to follow up WD40 worked a treat just applied it overnight and it worked on my garden tap, turned left slowly and then left and right to make it more lose and kept working on going left on that nut slowly till I could use my hand to take it off. You might need to use wd40 more then 2-3 times though but its still £15 cheaper then pb blaster (my end) so imo worth giving WD40 a shot just cover up the surroundings since the oil and liquid can leave stains.

Hey Valerie…., I probably added it 1St. Just squirt some around where the metal end of the hose screws on to the hose bib / faucet end. Where those 2 pieces of metal meet, it binds up. The PBB will loosen that binding over time. Could add some and let it set overnight to really let it penetrate. Thanks for watching!
