My anchor chain was rusty like yours and made a mess everywhere. So I brought it ashore and loaded it with a bucket of water into my Belle cement mixer and tumbled it for a while. Then tipped it out and hosed it off and hung up to dry. Then I got a bucket with some Hammerite silver paint and thinner in it, put it on the ground under a roof beam and dipped a loop of chain into the paint, tying one end of the chan to the beam and pulling all of it through the paint, hanging the looops to drip dry. Naturally in use some of the paint came off but it stayed basically silver (the paint colour) for many years and I kept the paint in an old sealed can for susbsequent dips. No way as good as a nice galvanised calibrated chain but it was a calibrated chain and they are expensive to replace, Hammerite and thinner was the more economical method of saving and cleaning it up. Plus it kept my anchor locker cleaner.

This reminds me of my dad. He had a pile of rusty chain in the shop and wanted to clean it up. He hooked it to the truck and had me drive up and down the alley a couple times. Gave them a hose off and dried them in the sun. Hit them with a bit of paint to keep them from getting rusty again. They were a lot nicer to use after that.

I have the same sand blasting cabinet. I got one of those adhesive flexible led strips meant for under cabinet lighting and wrapped it around the inside. It so bright now I can actually see everything. Give it a go.

I've not had much experience with the windlasses but usually they had a clutch lever of some kind that allowed free fall under control when anchoring and then turn the lever/control and power up the chain back into the locker. Gravity does the rest. It's how the big ship's do it although they have the chain held by a dog which is knocked out using a large hammer when dropping the anchor. Great video , very helpful to a lot of us . Thanks.

Simon, if you take that chain, I get an old cement mixer to put that chain in the cement mixer which some stones and let it run around that chain will come out like brand new.

Obviously those brass gears are a lot stronger than you think. ANd since the drive gear is at a perpendicular angle to the circular ring gear, it is not going to slip. I actually worked on such gear setups and materials before and they perform very well... Thumbs Up!

My opinion as an ex seafarer is to leave well alone about wheelhouse control for lowering the anchor.The idea of the clutch is so that the anchor can be released on the brake in an emergency

1:57 great video. Being ex matelot I worked anchors and clankers. Windlass has no reverse weight of anchor pulls the cable up the Hawes pipe and around the windlass when slipped. Maybe obvious but thought I would mention it. Carry on😂

There is a special oil that goes in the gearbox,it worm gear oil grease cannot be used because it does not lubricate the 2 bearings on the worm shaft,also that winch is a one way as a 2 directional winch has 4 brushes yours only has 2 also has 3 battery leads for up,down and earth,but the worm oil is important

If you're anchored in an area with a muddy bottom, you need some way to wash the chain off as you retrieve it from the bottom.

"what would be nice to do is to wind it out and wind it up from the comfort of the wheelhouse" While yes, that would be nice, that's unfortunately not generally how dropping anchor or retrieving it works. During retrieval you need someone on deck or in the chain locker to guide the chain and coil it correctly or it becomes a tangled mess. You also need to keep an eye on the boats position relative to the chain and how the chain is coming into the hawsepipe, which is tricky if all your crew is in the wheelhouse. Dropping anchor similarly you kinda want to be at the bow to make sure it drops in the right place and the chain comes out correctly. Usually it's gravity dropped because that's the only way you know you get your anchor where you want it. If you drop it slowly on the windlass you'll have a lot of time to drift and for currents to take your anchor and chain where you don't want it.

CONGRATS that looks FANTASTIC! And yes, it ran much smoother and faster after reassembly/lubrication. A TIP: Next time you have the chain all pulled out, PAINT A MARK every 25 feet or even every 10 and alternate colors so you know when you pull in or let out how much rode you have out at any given time.

You probably want to be on the bow when letting out the anchor chain but it may be much more important when bringing the chain back in. When letting it out, you want to keep an eye on it in order to know exactly how much is out, you don't want to get to the *Bitter End*. But when retrieving the chain, you may need to "flake" the chain so it doesn't end up in one big pile.

to change direction of rotation you need to move the plate connecting the brushes to the stator windings. If you set it up like a winch you will need 4 big (200 amp)( solenoids then you can activate 2 at a time to get reverse directions

You should have used a NLG 00 flowable grease in the gear case. The grease the was in it was more liquid if you remember. Over here inthe States we call that grease "picker head grease" ,buy it at a John Deere tractor dealer. What you put in there will form chanels in cold weather and NO lube will get on the worm gear and worm.

I have a 55 Ford that has 6 volts and positive ground and a 56 Ford that has 12 volts and negative ground. I tried the 55 starter on the 56, and it turned in the proper direction. The motor on your device looks like a starter and must work the same as my Fords, where it turns the same regardless of polarity.

I got a tip for you about keeping the brushes to stay open when installing the cover back on. Use a socket as big as the commutator and the brushes will easy slide on, the socket goes in the brush holder keeping the brushes from spring back out.

Doing great! Just keep in mind that you may want to be nice to your equipment and use the boat engine to come up on the chain rather than pull it and the anchor with the winch. It saves the motor and gears from stripping. I assume you guys know this already and this is just a test drive.

Got two items for you: 1) What do/did you do for a full time job before Sarinda? 2) Electric motor brushes usually have a pinhole through the top (push the brush all the way in and insert a piece of rigid wire). Install the armiture then pull the pins/wires. And yes, the Muir sounds MUCH better & stronger!!

Two or three thoughts if no-one else has already posted them. Just the ramblings of this old man. Anchor Chain... Before you reload the chain into the locker you need to paint the inboard end of the chain, maybe three fathoms, white is normal, so that if you're dropping the hook in deep or rough water you know when you're getting to the end of the chain. It's so you don't loose the chain overboard, the painted bit warns you you're coming to the end. It's not nomal to attach the end of the chain to something in the locker but I'm not fully sure why not. I suspect it's so you can safely slip the anchor and chain if you needed to. You just let it go. Lubricant for that worm gear... If you've not already done so, check with the manufacturer of the winch for the correct lubricant. I'm a bit dubious about that grease (I'm happy to be wrong) but I suspect it might need a specific marine grease, or, a Teflon or Lithium base grease, or possibly even a very heavy gear oil. Whatever you use, it needs to be specific for a Steel and Phosphor Bronze worm and pinnion. The wear rate of that Bronze wheel will be terrible with the wrong lube. When you stripped it there was clear evidence of bronze particles in the original lube. I've inspected Overhead Crane gearboxes that have suffered that exact fate, just because of wrong lube. Check and be sure or it could be seriously expensive. Do not use any form of Graphite grease or Graphite based Oil additive anywhere near that gearbox. For some reason Graphite works like a thickening agent when it is subject to the sliding action of a worm and pinnion. Then it ceases to lubricate anything. It's not just an expensive repair, it can also be a safety issue if it fails at sea. Final one... When you get Sarinda out on the water, keep a line on deck with a small bouy or float permanently attached. If you ever need to slip the anchor you quickly attach the line and bouy to the chain so you can come back, find it, and recover it later.

You'll probably have figured this out by now, but your winch can be wired to reverse fairly easily. You first need the proper relay/solenoid and controller switch. The winch motor body is grounded, battery power comes from a cable off of the solenoid terminal to the single winch terminal and then each of the other (field) terminals are individually connected to terminals on the solenoid. There is no bridge connection between any of the terminals. The field terminals determine the direction of the winch. Apply power to one, it goes in one direction, power to the other reverses it.

It would be possible to do a bit of a cludge to eliminate the solenoid, but not knowing the voltages or amp requirements it might be a little iffy. Connect the battery power to a heavy duty on-off switch and connect it to the single pole terminal. You'd have to turn this on first. Then use 2 separate on-off switches, momentary buttons would be better if you can find suitable heavy duty ones, and connect each one to battery power and then to the field terminals. It should work but be sure to fuse the power leads! If you wanted to be a little fancier, and have a better system, use a relay on each of the field wires and control the relay with momentary button. The ON-OFF switch could power both relays.

Relays have fast moving contacts. They are always the best option for heavy currents. Slow moving contacts cause excessive arcing especially on switch opening.

The winch has no ground return to the battery. It should be straight-forward switch the coils in either direction. Does energising both coils make the motor more powerful?

That worm moves quite slowly so filling the box with grease should be good. Grease gets pushed forward by the worm. Any air space will cause it to run dry as there’s nothing to feed in from the back. So fill it full. Probably don’t pump it up with a grease gun but certainly fill it.

Simon, you only need the motor to go to one way. Because you drop anchor you don’t lower the anchor. it’s called a capstone. Great job mate. 👍⭐️

It amazing how stripping a motor down give s great clean up and a lick of paint does a new one will cost around 10 times what you spent stripping and cost of grease and paint.

You need an albright solenoid if you want to control its direction. Same setup as on a 4wd winch etc.
