Millenial here. Owner of a 2019 VW GTI 6-speed manual transmission. Absolute blast to drive. Love hearing the sound of the blow-off valve between gears. It never gets old. Self-taught manual driver. The movies that pushed me to learn were Gone In 60 Seconds (2000) & The Fast and The Furious (2001).

Back in the early 90s when I was around 8-10 years old, my dad started letting me shift gears in his Dodge Dakota. That helped me so by the time I could reach the clutch I felt pretty comfortable shifting. Good times!

I learnt entirely on a stick shift and had a manual daily driver (a 1997 Daihatsu Mira) for around 2 years before switching to an AT car. My advice for those learning is to learn on a manual no matter what, and familiarize yourselves before moving to 'easier' options.

Gen X here... My buddy gave me a few lessons on his Nissan Maxima before I went and purchased a 95 MK4 Supra 5 speed. It was an interesting night getting it home but in a few days I was good to go. Later I had to drive an old diesel box truck for work with a crash box, after a day in North Jersey in traffic with that hopping into the Supra afterwards was like a vacation.

I'm barely a gen z born in the last year to qualify so 1997. I didn't even know manual cars were a thing until I had gotten my license! I like to drive cars but I have only driven autos. I learned to drive in an early 2000s beige corolla. I even had fun driving that simple car. Just because its not a sports car, doesn't mean its not fun for me. No offense, but I don't care about manual cars. I don't hate them, just don't care for them. I don't care for the opportunity to learn to drive manual either as future cars especially electric will be auto. For the car enthusiasts sure driving manual is nice, but I'll just enjoy the simpler auto.

My memory is fading, but I learned to drive, period, on either an '82 or '83 Dodge Colt. AM radio, no AC, 70-ish HP (let that sink in). The good: it was tiny and fit anywhere and sipped petrol. The bad, you could ring it's neck and it didn't matter. Merely getting on the interstate was an experience. I've always owned at least one manual ever since.

I learned on my dad's VW. I only drove sticks until I had a 2014 328xi and my wife needed to drive it. I now have an M3 on order - the main reason? Because it's got a stick and is one of the last to have one. Get it now or not at all. Next design M3 is automatic only. Not even VW's have stick anymore, and they used to all be sticks. It's just so sad, people especially the new generation (I'm Gen X) are so damn lazy. There's nothing like driving a stick car, the control, the feedback you get, and it's just plain fun. To me, that's real driving. Automatics are for people that don't have the ability or don't want to be bothered dealing with a clutch pedal.

I learned on a 90s Acura Integra. I'm terribly rusty and out of practice now. I do agree, it requires your full attention; all appendages will be used, so there's no opportunity for texting or scrolling while driving. As an owner of a PDK vehicle, I can definitely say that the automatics have come a LONG way from what they were. Even something like a pitiful manual Celica or Civic felt just as quick as my Monte Carlo SS, which was automatic. It made driving weaker vehicles more interesting. Now, the automatics are much quicker than the manuals, as the shift timing programmed into them, along with adopting a dual-clutch architecture allows for upshifts faster than any human could pull off, and do it consistently.
