Can your mtb upgrade to SRAM GX Eagle?
Kind of confused by all this tech stuff?
After posting the "How to install GX Eagle" video, I received a bunch of tech questions. This being the case, I asked my buddy Geoff from SRAM if he wouldn't mind recording a follow up video covering all these questions. If you're confused by what a SRAM XD driver is and if you have one, or what you need on your bike to be compatible for GX Eagle, you've come to the right place! Remember, if you're not sure it's always a good idea to take your mountain bike and questions to your local bike shop and ask them to help you out!

Upgraded from an 11 speed SRAM to 12 Speed GX Eagle and XO1 Carbon Cranks 👍 Total was around $900. Black Bird Bike Co. in Phoenix 🙌🏽 Initially had a brand new Wolf tooth oval chainring then switched to SRAM XO1 and it feels so much better.

I just upgraded my 2021 Trek Roscoe 6 to the SRAM GX Eagle 12 speed drivetrain with the SRAM 32T Oval Chainring (Upgraded my brakes to SRAM Code R’s as well). Great Video & Channel.. New Subscriber.. Thanks! 🇺🇸

I just upgaded from Shimano 1 x 10 to SRAM GX Eagle. I didn't realize I needed to order a new rear mech hanger as the one that was on there was suitable only for teh Shimano direct-fit rear mechs, cost me £80 in hangers as I ordered a spar from Rocky and had to pay import duty meh :( However, all sorted and first ride was today. Love it. Oh, had to buy a new Dt Swiss rear wheel due to the XD driver as you've been talking about.

Sounds like you had a few issues but it was all worth it. I'm happy with the final setup. To be honest, I was also very happy with their 11 speed setup too :-)

Hi guys, this is an old but very "current" video, thank you Gene for recording it. My question is: I know I can I install GX Eagle (with NX cassette) on my GT bike with Shimano 2/10 speed, but: do I have to do anything with the derailleur hanger (current hanger is "direct mount") in order to avoid the top jockey wheel grinding against the cassette's teeth. If so, could you please provide any pointers; greatly appreciate your help

1st. off, Thank you for your video and info sharing. Unfortunately though my questions that I was looking for an answer to wasn't addressed directly. I think (LOL) it was in the comment you made "duh that's a no brainer" or something to that affect when asking if you could use a different ring with the xd driver upgrade and you also you answered it the other way around. But my question is, I bought a Schwinn Axum and needed to upgrade my bottom bracket, so I saw a great video on a DUB and decided to buy it in addition I bought a sram gx 175 mm crank. Can that be used with the current back gears and driver that came with my bike? (9 speed proprietary) Thank you.

Very great info here. Thank you, G&G, for taking the time to coordinate this video. I actually bird dogged all this info on my own to convert my 1x10 XT drivetrain to the Eagle GX. Made me wish I watched this video sooner....woulda saved me a ton of time! It was good to watch nonetheless. If nothing else, confirmed my research tho. Eagle GX drivetrain due to arrive in the mail tmrw...can’t wait to strap everything on. Incidentally....I have a CF Kona HT frame with a PF92 BB, so I had to upgrade the BB too. Only added ~$40 so not bad.

Upgrade to the SRAM DUB BB?

A new BB will be needed if your existing BB isn’t DUB. DUB refers to the diameter of the bearings in the BB. There are DUB BB’s for all manner of BB standards (BSA-Threaded, press-fit, BB30, etc)

@@smvogel73 I don’t think you need SRAM DUB BB to run Eagle? As long as the chainline spacing is optimal, it should work.

Depends on what part of the drivetrain you’re referring to. If you wanna run an Eagle crankset, you’ll need a DUB-compatible BB. If you’re simply talking about the shifter and RD…and you plan to keep the cranks you have…then correct.

Great info, next time how about getting some info out on gearing, explain why Nino Schurder is running a 38t chainring on his Eagle, its hard for people to get a grip on going beyond a 32t chainring on Eagle 12, its hard for them to think outside the 11s box, box being (experience, knowledge). The people with Eagle's say they don't need the 50t... there is way more range in a 12s if they increase the gears on the chainring.

I had 32T chainring on GX Eagle and was pretty much using mainly the smaller 4 cogs on the cassette for the terrain I ride in. I switched up to a 34T and now I’m more or less in the middle 4 cogs of my cassette, where the chainline is optimized. I guess people who are using 30T must be doing lots of uphill climbs and/or are not very strong in the legs.

Interesting. I had 3x9 before I went GX Eagle. I find climbs are the same but I lost a few top end gears. But the simplicity of 1X and elimination of front mech and shifter paid off.

I have a 10x speed specialized rockhopper and my question. Is it possible that i can upgrade my rockhopper into 12x speed SRAM GX groupset? Thank you

Yes but you will need to change your rear cassette driver. SRAM GX cassettes need and XD driver and odds are you have a standard Shimano driver. If you're just looking for better gearing for hills, look into Box. Their cassette will mount directly on what you have. I have the trek marlin 7 and I got told by my bike shop i will have to upgrade my back wheel for the 1 x 12 upgrade. I have been seeing videos showing people fitting the nx, Suntour, also Shimano 12 speed cassette on the stock hub.

So here's the deal, the first SRAM 11 and 12 speed cassettes needed a SRAM driver. So you would need this driver on your rear hub. Now the new NX cassettes will run on the more common Shimano driver. That's why you're getting this information. Hope this helps 👍

I really should have had a wider range of gears today, I managed to ride up one of the steepest hills but still bit heavy as I am weaker due to being sick, I rode up in 46Tx34Toval, but I need the high end that 34Toval gives me, So bigger cassette is definitely on my wishlist. Still not decided what to do with the drivetrain. Not tested any aftermarket wide range cassettes yet, I did not like how the Sunracfe 11-46T performed, I see their 50T works well for some without backpedalling chain drop, but I got this issue with the 46T. Sunrace cassettes are very flexible. I have seen some snapped Sram cassettes. So far Shimano XT cassettes have performed well. I heard some of the aftermarket wide range cassettes have brutal shifts, which is very bad.

Great video. I have a technical question that no bike shop seems to be able to answer. I hope you can help. I have a 29 inch Cube LTD 2014 mountain bike fitted with slick tires that I want to dedicate exclusively to asphalt riding, and I wanted to have the 12X1 described in the video but with bigger gears. So the question is if I can use the Sram gx eagle groupset, but instead of the gx eagle crank and ring, install a Sram Rival 1 X-Sync 10-11 speed Compact GXP crankset with a 50 tooth chainring. This ring also has the narrow wide profile of the teeth, so I think it should work with the 12 speed chain. The set up would take a rather long chain to accommodate a potential 50/50 pairing, but assuming that there are no clearance issues with any part of the bike frame, is this feasible? Thanks!

The Eagle SX that came on my Canyon Fat Bike is a 12sp and I still can't figure out what to buy to upgrade to a GX Cassette and my local bike shop is not knowledgeable enough so I am up the creek without any help. I have DT Swiss BR 2250 27.5" SH wheels

Keep the cassette and upgrade everything else to GX. SX and NX suck generally speaking but the method I suggest to you is most economical.

I can't speak for your exact setup but I can tell you that 26" wheels can go with a 1 x setup. I wish it was really easy for me to just give you a thumbs up but there are so many products.

That is correct if you go with GX. Now if you go NX it should fit on your current rear hub or even think about looking into Box which also should fit your current setup.

After a year on 1x12, starting with a 32t to a 34t, I just put on a Full Time 36t, what a difference, when we ran 3x9 or 3x10 we would stay in the middle chainring most of the time, a 36t with a 12x36, or a 11x36..., 10x5Ot now with a 42t and a 50t,, I have my torque back, I don't have to spin to get power to the ground, and spin out on roots, or at top end, I'm getting up everything much easier with the FULL TIME 36t Eagle 10x50..., and going faster on the flats, and easier on the downs,, what about a 38t next?.. Hmmmmmm!!! for now I'm smiling,

Hey, can you converted a connondale trail 6 large tires 29/2.00 with 8 gear and 3 big gear in front... can you change that to eagle sram with 12 speed?

Yes. You can pretty much change over any bike but some will require more parts then others. In your situation your gonna need an entire kit with BB and a new cartridge on your rear hub. It might be a better idea to look into the SRAM NX group that is 11 speed. Cheaper and you might be able to reuse some stuff 👍

Been trying to figure out how to transform my Shimano system to Sram, but it is a real PIA! Cant seem to find the right free hub body for my 2x10 shimano system on my 2015 Giant Anthem 01. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tried an XD driver at my local bike shop, but it was too narrow (27mm I think). My Shimano hub body is 30mm. The Sram free hub body just spun freely. Great vid BTW, popular topic.

Man - I hope you don't mind me saying but no wonder you get confused....that is a lot of words and discussion to clarify just a few simple things that shouldn't take more than 2 minutes to explain. Any person new to MTB would be better advised to simply ask in their local bike shop and get the answer quickly.

Thats a good point man. I do find a lot of people getting confused by this and I seem to get a lot of questions. I'm a huge fan of taking the bike to the shop and getting help when things get messy.
