Why is it so hard to believe a woman doesn’t want to live with an alcoholic. It’s pretty clear cut. She had higher standards for her marriage that’s it.

Any alcohol whatsoever would be a deal breaker for me. And it's because my entire family is water-totallers and I am a tea totaller. And I work in healthcare so I see the worst case scenario of alcoholism gone wrong all the time.

Came home from work early one day found my 3-yr-old son playing with water in the bathroom sink, while he was in the living room drinking with his buddy. That was my last straw. Called CPS on him several times for taking off with his son while intoxicated. The judge ordered him to attend AA class as part of his probation. Once he completed the program he went right back to where he was. I finally had it, took my son and moved on. It’s been 20 years now, every time I look back I realize it was the best decision I have ever made for my son and I.

Similar to my story. I had to leave work early one night because he had our daughter and wasn’t answering the phone. I’d been trying to trust him-but there is no trusting an alcoholic. I raced home to find him blacked out and passed out on the floor while our two year old daughter toddled around the apartment all alone with a massively full diaper for who knows how long. Utterly disturbing. That was 11 years ago. Still haunts me, takes me back to that feeling of hopelessness.

The first caller reminds me of my ex-husband. He always minimized how much he drank (he would drink whiskey in big cups). He drank right when he got home from work and I can tell instantly when he was intoxicated. He would handle our two girls while intoxicated and there were times they would get hurt out of him being irresponsible. He would make me out to be the bad guy every single time. He has driven with the girls in the car more than once. I had enough because he would not see himself for who he is. Still won't. I completely understand where his wife is coming from!

May I say, I don’t think your wife gives you enough credit for what you do for people! :) I was a bit sad to sense some bitterness and tension coming from her part in some of her side comments throughout the conversation-I am sensitive to those things, as a wife who also feels smarter than her husband. I hope she is able to get to a point where she more fully appreciates all the good that you bring to her and others, and is able to find her value and worth not in the World’s empty accolades but in her value in God’s eyes.

John, as someone who was married to an alcoholic: it is extremely taxing. You feel alone most of the time. The drink becomes the third entity in your marriage; the drink becomes the other woman. Obviously you have not lived with an alcoholic before. Do you know anything about alcoholism and the damage it does to families? It’s not about the two beers.

I was going to say, I’m surprised by John’s response. I grew up with an alcoholic. Two beers with an alcoholic isn’t what two beers is to a regular person. It’s the constant seeing them drink and knowing what problems can/will unfold. I’m sure this first caller’s wife was so sick of him drinking, and to find out he had been drinking the day of his daughter’s accident was beyond disappointing.

Yes, John might be focusing on the "missing piece" heavily, but ultimately i agree with him that something doesnt feel right. First red flag: ask any police officer (or first responder in general) "Of DUI arrests where the person has answered 'yes' theyve been drinking, how many did the say they had?" Ill bet you dollars to doughnuts right now they say "two [drinks]." "Two beers" is like Universal Alcoholic Code®️ for no less than a six pack💯

My alcoholic husband will tell people he drinks "3 or 4 beers" a day. What he doesn't mention is that they are 8-9% alcohol beers (not normal beers) and it is at least twice as many as he's saying. And they are the bigger (500ml) cans, not regular ones. If you add up the alcohol content it is more than a 26oz bottle of hard liquor daily.

Do those of you watching this show not realize he was trying to extract more information from the first caller in an effort to give the best advice to a likely addict? He didn’t nonchalantly dismiss the alcohol use. I think this guy minimized his actions and did a good enough job to pull one over on Dr. D. You're right, he's been an absent husband and father, content to let life pass him by while he has essentially independently decided his drinking is "not a problem", so he hides it from his wife. Wife doesn't feel safe or supported or loved. Makes sense that she wants him gone.
@erikak128

It makes sense to most people, yes. But I can tell you anyone who has ever dealt with an alcoholic can tell he's picking and choosing his words to sound honest and to minimize the situation. You don't stop being an alcoholic just because you stop drinking and she knows that. He can't even explain why drinking became a problem and he excused it by saying it was because his kids were born. There's a lot of work that he still needs to do, starting with being honest with himself. I don't blame her for wanting away from him temporarily or permanently.

For caller #2, what John says at 30:14 IMO is the very heart of the matter: your parents are "embarrassed to tell their friends at the country club" that their son-in-law is an entertainer! They'd rather introduce him as a law student, engineer, doctor, corporate executive, etc., etc. Their insecurity is driving their actions, not a genuine concern for your well-being and happiness.

I can't believe John didn't see this man as an alcoholic. If he did, his council would have been different. The "missing piece" is alcoholism. Alcoholism is the elephant in the room. Nothing is wrong with the wife. I was married to an alcoholic. Before undergoing marriage counseling, the alcoholic needs to pursue sobriety and the wife needs to attend Al Anon. I decided to leave my ex, unfortunately, because my ex wasn't willing to go to rehab and his counselor stopped counseling because he wasn't willing to stop drinking. He was attending AA and had a sponsor but he still was drinking. Pleased to say my ex is sober and has gotten his life together. Unfortunately, we are divorced, but we are amiable, and I am thankful for this. We have two daughters who we love dearly.

I agree with Dr Deloney on the first caller. He is not telling the whole truth, women with children don’t walk away just for lying, it has been a constant problem that she doesn’t feel like her children are safe with him unless she is around. If he wasnt drinking their child will have not gotten hurt? Then there is the you get sick and tired of literally having a partner that is disconnected and she is doing all the work. Why stay married if is less work to be alone? She is doing the right decision.

My parents did the same thing to me. Gave their blessing then withdrew it. They demanded we go to counseling with their pastor which we were happy to do. The pastor said I dont see any reason you shouldn't get married. They were unpleasant preparing for the wedding, and after the wedding barely spoke to my husband for the first 2 years. The marriage turned out to have a lot of issues. He was a hard worker but struggled to stick with a job. He kept creating new biz that resulted in years of poverty and eventually 2 bankruptcy. Fast forward 23 years and infidelity broke the marriage after I'd stuck it out so long. 3 amazing children and when I told my parents the marriage was over they said, "We told you so."

John it’s not unreasonable for a partner to NOT want to be with an alcoholic despite her not being hit or swore at. He didn’t fix the railing his daughter fell through because he was more concerned with drinking than maintaining the house which he admitted to. Drinking to excess can absolutely be a deal breaker even with the absence of “abuse.”

I'd be a lot more on board with all the "Jesus Juggler" hate if he didn't bring home 50k per year. And let's be real, it's not like her job sounds any better on paper but she also brings home 45k. So what's the problem? Everybody is making good money and if he treats her well and she treats him well, they'd be stupid to throw that away just so mom and pops can tell the Joneses that their little baby girl married a doctor or a lawyer.
@SB_McCollum
@SB_McCollum 8 месяцев назад
That 50K is now 35K accounting for inflation, what's his plan for next year? Become a comedian who juggles on the clean comedy tour? Unless she's got her own income that she intends to remain at all thru the marriage, then I think she's just dreaming that he's Mr. Right, because, hey, he makes her laugh n'all. Oh, wait, what else was on that list that her parents observed? Sometimes John does some real coaching work, sometimes he spots the problem but can't discuss it because this is a podcast and he can't ask those questions here. I think this one is the latter, the format has its limits. I hope she takes her parents' concerns seriously and comes to her own conclusions, because once she marries, his problems are ALL her problems, too.
@probablynot1368

I wonder how long he’s been working at, or building, his career as a ‘Jesus Juggler’. What is his short-term, and long-term goals? I’m glad that John discussed a business plan and what his future might look like. Perhaps he’ll become a motivational speaker, standup comedian, etc. He’s making $50,000 this year, but how many hours did he work to earn this money, and how much was used for his traveling and lodging expenses? She’s spreading her time among a few businesses herself. This young couple seem to be very creative and hard-working, yet I get the feeling that they’re a bit distracted with being a Jack (and Jill) of all trades, but a master of none. It works out when you’re young, have no children, and keep your responsibilities very simple; however, the addition of children will most certainly change this dynamic. Perhaps her parents are looking 5 to 10 years into the future and are a bit unsettled with their daughter having to take on more and more responsibility that may be too much for her to handle.

Yet they made their own private marriage business public "on the Internetz forever.” Dr. John appears to have had altruistic motives for the interview. As for Sheila's motives, I rely on her own words. When comparing herself to Dr. John and speaking about her own upcoming book, she said, "It's hard to be an indie author [...], and I do ALL my own marketing, which is the only reason I agreed to be on your podcast." Plus, Dr. John gave a plug to her coaching business at the beginning of the episode, and made certain to tout her as the original Dr. Delony, with him just following along later in her footsteps. Dr. John was not at all self-aggrandizing. It seems he thought the interview would truly help those who live with people who have ADHD. It also seems that Dr. John does not see the numerous red flags given off by his wife. If Dr. John cannot see what is going on in his own relationship with Sheila, how can fans trust his discernment regarding situations of callers, listeners, and readers of his books who need help.
