The Conservative party is only nominally conservative, so even if the Liberal party gets tossed out entirely in the next election - which is very likely - the Conservative party replacing them will mostly just carry on the existing policy trend, albeit at a much reduced rate. Unlike our American counterparts, us Canadians don't really have a solid framework of national principles to fall back on and base any conservative or traditionalist movement around because we functionally ejected most of that back in the 60s when the idea that "anyone can be a Canadian" grew in political and cultural prominence. As a result, what passes for "conservatism" in Canada is constructed entirely around the framework provided to it by its opposite. If you don't believe me, take a few minutes and listen to Conservative MPs speak in the house of commons. More often than not, they'll use the same language and discuss the same issues as the Liberals or the NDP.
