Zapp not actually learning anything is a hundred percent Zapp; Leela exploiting the aliens isn't as much. I didn't understand Leela's arc. Another good video!
@roberthill5805
@roberthill5805 9 месяцев назад
She did though, she couldn't write, went to an alien world, copied their lives to get paid for a TV show, bribed Bender, introduced the aliens to the corporate execs, just to have them exploited by the Corp all the while getting rewarded for it. She repeatedly shown to have a deep, dark capacity to anger, violence, and neglect for others.

I agree that we've certainly seen Leela get up to some really questionable stuff. She has a darker side, and definitely a violent side, but I think Leela wants to act righteously. Sure she's exploiting the people in Rumbledy-Hump, but she feels guilty about it the whole time and is literally begging someone to punish her at the end. Not forgiving the behavior, just pointing out she went to such lengths to hide it because she wants people (herself included) to see her as a good person. She's definitely violent and angry, to an extreme when you consider where the anger collar leads in Bender's Game. But most of the violence we see from her (not all, but most) is either protective or revenge based. We've seen her stick up for the underdog far more than we've seen her push them down. She might be violent, but she has a big heart, a big angry, violent heart. (If this was a video, this is when I would play that clip from Late Philip J Fry where she cries about Fry being dead while kicking a hole in the television) This is a long way to say, I think she could have been manipulated into exploiting the Tactilians, but they just kinda skipped that part and had her follow authority unquestioningly, which also feels unlike her.

@bennett420 I can agree with it being rushed to make it seem unreasonable. It seems to be a mix of her wanting to be seen as righteous mixed with writing being rushed as of late. It is nice to hear that the writing looks to be improving as the series continues. I still need to watch the new season but have been too busy to, and I'm glad your video dropped in my recommendations.

I am SOOO glad that the episodes drop weekly instead of as a binge-able dump. It feels like more of an event and I like watching them 'with' other fans of the shows. Kudos, Bennett on your channels progression!

I've been blown away by the opportunity to have all these great Futurama conversations. TBH, I was pretty bummed at first because I wanted to just binge the episodes. But I couldn't have been more wrong, I owe literally all that progression to the slow roll out of the season lmao. It's been really fun to keep up the videos, knowing that people want to dive deep into this stuff. Now I just have to figure out what to do once the last episode drops next week lol

There are two reasonable factors that makes Zapp not getting dishonorably discharged after refusing orders when Leela did make sense, and one meta reason. Where Leela refused on ethical principle which she was likely to maintain in future events, Zapp refused in order to avoid cancellation. Principles are immutable, self preservation is flexible. Zapp could be taught later that the Doop (like most if not all armies) can whitewash the killing of civilians pretty easily, and thus Zapp would lose his reason to disobey them. Actual morality isn’t that easy to manipulate. The second is that Zapp is an established officer. Whether for class solidarity or for maintaining the illusion of uncompromising hierarchy of rank, an experienced leader with a good job conveys to young recruits that there is a potential profitable future in the service. The meta reason is that sitcoms need to reset by the end of the episode so the next bunch of writers won’t have to plan while considering dramatic changes to the concept of the show and it’s viewers won’t be confused from missing an episode.

Soild points, the first one fits in very nicely with the overall theme of the episode too. I saw the disparity as more of a missed opportunity than a glaring issue, but discarding the projected image for the practical solution would have been right in keeping with both the larger theme and the point I was trying to make about the peace treaty. All great points, particularly the last one, they were never gonna actually get rid of Zapp

Also a commentary on the fact that women are generally punished more harshly for similar "transgressions" than men.

I thought the episode was fine, and I just now realized that DOOP was imperialism-supporting suckitude. But I do get what they were going for and I liked that. Also, ugh, the Anthology of Interest episode is getting *rough.* *beat* It's awful. Holy shit.
@bennett420
@bennett420 9 месяцев назад
It took me longer than it should have too realize that DOOP is pretty much exclusively up to no good. There's always been the comparison to the Federation from Star Trek that Hermes makes, that puts them in a decent light. But when you consider that Zapp has always been in charge of their military, how good can they be lol?

I'm gonna be 100% honest, while the messaging is surprisingly good when it comes to cancellation in this episode, all of the Durian references were just painfully unfunny to me - so much so that it was about the only thing I could remember from this one, souring it a lot for me.

I was disappointed by the episode. Sure, they did basically say "higher ups will un-cancel a person when they need them for something", but why make it temporary here(I mean the 8 hour program instead of actually firing him)? Something like James Gunn situation would be perfect for this episode to spoof, but nope.
@dissonanceparadiddle
@dissonanceparadiddle 9 месяцев назад
by making it how reality is it holds up the mirror. it could show a better ideal but it's not the way they decied to go.
@bennett420
@bennett420 9 месяцев назад
I think the James Gunn situation almost fits in to the broader net the episode tried to cast. He got fired as director of Guardians of the Galaxy V3 for some twitter jokes because Disney has an image to uphold. (Which might be part of the reason they wouldn't want to touch it directly, Hulu being owned by Disney and all). But Gunn did end up directing GotG:V3, so Disney rehired him as soon as the heat died down. It might have been interesting to see them tackle it more directly, especially considering the platform they're on, but I ultimately liked the direction they decided to go in.
@TabalugaDragon
@TabalugaDragon 9 месяцев назад
@@bennett420basically Disney realized Gunn will make them money(which he proved this year as GoTG 3 is one of few successful Marvel movies since Endgame) and hired him again, understanding that he is the only one who understands those characters and can make a truly great movie about them. Like I said - would be great to see that in this episode, but the "8 hour cancellation time" kinda kills the idea completely. He'd be re-hired whether they needed him or not, which makes the cancellation pointless and to me, feels empty.

Yeah, and I probably could have unpacked that more because I think it serves the concept. Quick thought version: the hiring is obviously performative, both in her statement, and literally the fact that she, a woman, is already at the levers of power. The gender of it all is a distraction to quiet public scrutiny, the only thing Glab really cares about is resource grabbing.

It had jokes I liked, Bender forcing his way onto the crew and being terrible and manning the Nimbus got me. Dr. Kind immediately vaporizing himself after reinstatement got me good. Definitely not the funniest Futurama ep, but solid compared to a handful that preceeded it this season. It's been interesting to see different reactions and opinions about this season, because obviously I only have my own. I'm assuming this wasn't a stand out episode for you, how'd the rest of the season fair? Was there one you liked? I know for me it's only a few, for some, it's none, which I get.

@@bennett420 I’ve never not laughed or questioned the concept of a Futurama episode before and this season broke that record . I liked every episode before this recent season. The series concluded perfectly but it was brought back for mid ???, now im asking : - how did time kinda pass and kinda not while time was frozen - why is leela dumber then previous seasons - why really show kiffs/Amy kids when their basic and add nothing . The only likeable episode was the first , Christmas one and Amy kids episode This is my favourite adult animated show man. And it still is , this seasons not canon to me

It seems to me that those who cry about cancel culture the most are okay with cancel culture as long as it lines up with their ideology.
