CANE CORSO - SHOULD YOU GET ONE?! - Part 2 

I've had a Cane Corso for about a year and a half. My family and I just got our second one about 2 and a half months ago. She's now 18 weeks and absolutely amazing. As we did with our 1st CC, we socialize her like crazy and she's knows she must look up to everyone in our family as leaders. I think many people can own CC without issues as long as they research the dog and know how they tick. Do NOT let them think they are in charge of ANYTHING. A firm but consistent leader is a must and anyone who gets this breed, obviously needs to be that at all times. The year and a half year old male has a rock solid temperament. He never barks at anyone in public and pretty much ignores other animals when healing and working. Saying this, he is ALWAYS on "guard" and instinctually on point scouting everything around him. Owners must have time and patience for this breed...but when they put in the time and effort the Cane Corso is maybe the best all around Canine companion on this planet.

100% spot on. I have a 1 year old male. Their protective instincts set in young. My boss is a breeder and we constantly tell everyone , even if they have the sweetest of personalities, it’s in their nature to be cautious and they will be that way with strangers. You have to be dominant minded. You absolutely can not be soft with them or they will push limits. However, they are extremely smart and learn quickly. A beautiful, amazing breed, but not for everyone.

Drool, yes. A lot less than my English Mastiff, who I had to wear a bowling towel around. That dog would go and get a mouth full of water, hold it in his mouth and walk over to you and drop it into your lap... If you want less drool, get a Dane. I've had a lot of experience with giant breeds and I'm finding the Cane Corso to be a mix between the English and the Dane. VERY smart dog, also very stubborn and can be a little overwhelming to others not use to him. He will go from zero to holy crap in a second, mush more speed than my English was, would keep up with any of the Danes I've had. Biggest teether I have had with my English coming in second. He can literally take a bite out of the brink in a wall. I dont care what toy manufactures say, this dog will destroy it. Nylabone... bite it in half first day. Get the largest Kong toy, and Kong makes a Round ball with a couple handles that has a tennis ball inside. Both of these hold up and he loves them. Beds... Beds... sigh... Just go ahead and get the strongest made bad you can find. There are several companies that make beds for chewers. I went with and Orvis after mine turned 5 other beds to fluff mainly due to the Orvis warranty. 100% no question asked money back if your dog can rip it apart... This is a $350+ bed so know that going in. The first one they sent Max figured out how to get on the heavy duty zipper and pulled hard enough to separate the teeth, he then shredded the memory foam. All this within the first 15 minutes of getting it. Thats not an exaggeration. 15 minutes. Gave him the bed, he loved it, I walked out tot he room to do something and came back to the happiest dog in the world surrounded by foam... Orvis immediately shipped me out a new bed on thier dime and it has held up for almost 2 months now with zero issues. Dont let them get bored. I made that mistake and he ate a wall. Not to be mean or anything, he just found eating the wall fun. Goes back to give him plenty of GOOD toys. A big Kong with some treat crammed inside will keep him entertained for hours. These dogs want to be beside you. We have a spot in the house we have put up those puppy kennel gates, and he goes in there to sleep. He could hop over or tear it apart if he wanted to, but he doesn't because he has known it since being just a few month old. BUT whining and barking... he is telling you to come and get him so he can be beside you. the do NOT like being alone. Max failed at crate training for this reason. You try and lock him up in one, even with training and he will whine and bark non stop (and destroy the kennel) until you let him out.... I admit, he wore us down. we tried for a week, and he would go on and on for hours. If you crate, plan on it being in your bedroom with you so he can see you. Other people, we walk Max almost every night and on our street there are a dozen other people who do the same. Max got comfortable with this after a few times, but even so, he is very picky about who he wants walking around us. Use a prong collar as nothing else gives you the control you will need if he happens to not like something or REALLY wants to go and meet a new dog. At 11 months, 110 pounds he is still a puppy and doesn't have the control an older, better trained dog will have. On prongs, get trained on how to use them correct. Always fit it correctly and make sure it fits up behind the ears, NOT around the throat. Start teaching sit and down first day. Don't let him jump up on anyone as a puppy, you dont want him thinking it's ever ok to jump up on you in play. I give mine an open hand of stop and he will stop and sit. This is very important and they can be just sitting there playing with you and loving on you and then get a sudden burst of jump up energy, believe me he will win. They like to sit on you. if your standing there, he is sitting on your feet. I dont know why, he likes feet. But they are a mastiff and like mastiffs and danes, he want to sit and lean into you. if he does this and your not ready for it, he can knock you over. If your eating dinner and he walks up to the table and lays down, he will move the entire table 2 feet as his slides down the leg. I see all these videos of people with thier small/medium an even large dogs jumping on the couch, sitting on them, being in you lap etc... He wants to do this, dont let him. Go find a 140 pound friend hand have them jump in your lap while your sitting there... Claws.. keep them trim. You are going to get scratched. period. he doesn't mean to , but even the act of them wanting to put a paw on you to tell you they love you and want to be near you can leave a good scratch. Finally, did I say smart? They WILL remember what you or other do to them. Never hit your dog and let them think of your hand of someone else coming at them is a bad thing. If you need to discipline, you have to do it in the moment, with a good correction of a prong and a stern command. This will mean keeping him leashed and on a prong as a young dog even around the house until he learns what his limits are and what his standing in the family level is.. Teach them that they are on the bottom of the pack. You, your family, your friends even other pets are over him. he will thank you for it in the end. This also take some of the pressure off him thinking he has to be the main protector and on guard 100% of the time. When he is barking at something, put him behind you and go see what the issue is, let him know that, YOU are the protector and the head or the pack. The best way I have found to do this with any breed is to as a young puppy, get them into the on the back submit pose, with you hand holding them down around the neck. Dont say a work, just stare at the dog. The dog will eventually look away form you and relax, submitting to you as the alpha, then you can let him go and praise him. This immediately let the dog know who the alpha is. Love your dog no matter the breed. Giant breeds will be the most loyal, loving dogs you will ever see. For a giant breed beginner though, go with a Dane. get experience with a giant. The Cane is not a good starting breed for the uneducated and unexperienced. Sorry for the book...

I grew up with Rottweiler most of my life, got a puppy Rottweiler while living in Greece and my friend had a Cane Corso and they mated while I was away on vacation. Now I have one of the females 7 yrs old all brown like the rottie’s paws. One of the best dogs I have ever had. Amazing temperament and extremely protective of the house and small children.

My girl Sadie passed away in 2022. Best dog I ever had. She loved the whole family, but I was her person, and my son as he got older. We did extensive (= expensive!) training when she was a very young pup, and I think that made all the difference. She was a great family dog, with empathy to the moon and back, and she wasn’t ever going to let any threat even close to any of us!

Love that the animal humane society sold me a Corso mix and labeled him as a Hound mix. Had no idea what I was getting into as a new dog owner. But wouldn't give him up for the world.

Our Corso is 3 years old she is massive 160 pounds a beauty. She has the best temperament and was raised as tiny baby with two adult boxers. She is a fantastic guardian of our property but she is super funny and goofy like our boxers I think she had adopted some of that from being around them. Very smart we can teach her anything for a treat ❤️

I have a 16 month old corso named Atticus. He’s around 120lbs and growing. I think my vet said it best. “You know you have a loaded gun, don’t you?” It’s very true and I was not ignorant going into getting this dog. They will absolutely kill or die for you. They are crazy protective without any training. I would say protective not aggressive. Consistent training and he/she has to know and understand the hierarchy of the home. Also snowflakes shouldn’t have these dogs! Best of luck to everyone. An absolutely amazing and loyal breed if you can put the work in for them. Don’t let them fail!!!

I have a 4 year old Cane Corso, female. Have had Rotts, Giant Schnauzer, Malis and German Shepherds. The CC is by far the nº1 guardian from my experience. Deep in their instinct. Has been the best dog with the familiy, and extremely well behaved at home. However, outside, I have to be VERY careful. I'm not stronger than her instinct nor her power. Your analogy is spot on! A beast, a battle tank! And like another person said, they are indeed a loaded gun! They have the 3rd strongest bite force of any other breed of dog, 700 psi! I just rescued my second Corso 2 months ago. They require the attention of a 2yr old!

The underbite is also a mixture of the boxer. The ultra giant tall ones are being mixed with Great Danes.

I ADORE my "battle tank"..... We opted for a rescue and he's amazing.. just at a little over five months old he goes everywhere with me... VERY smart and loving yet also very aware of what's around him. I've raised English bulldogs for several years... This breed THIS BREED!... My new mental favorite.... I'm sure there will be another in our future once our Trooper is past puppy stage...

You really see the guardian side of this dog when they are not with the pack leader. I can walk mine off leash in a heel, happy as can be, few sniffs here and there, maybe some fetch, walk past other people and animals without issue, loud noises dont startle him. When my mother or gf take him for a walk, the slightest change(someone taking out there trash to the curb) and he immediately gets in front of them and low growls and locks eyes, no tension in the leash, not lunging or barking, just very "On Point"... I did no training to get him this way, he hasnt done bite work or any "guard dog" training...When they first told me about this I didn't believe them because he is so mild with me. Love knowing that he is at home when I am gone. They are a lot of work, but worth it in every way.

My neighbor (across the street) has a CC. Apparently it thinks my front yard is his property as he was barking at me while I watered the flowerbed. I heard him barking from across the street and ignored. Next he's in the middle of the street, I continue to ignore. A few minutes later he's in my yard, the barking continues. I try to make nice, pat my leg and call him to me. I'm thinking maybe he's curious. He's not interested in making friends. A few minutes later he's about 8 feet from me and the barking seems more intense. I've never had a dog come into my yard and bark at me. 😮I go and get a golf club. He then backs off. I will inform my neighbor what happened. I believe it's a house with no males. I'm always weary when single women want to buy a large, potentially aggressive dog. Listen to him people. Most of you shouldn't get this dog. Get a gun.

Happy to be in the 0,1% of people where the Cane Corso fits me and my lifestyle like a glove. My darling is 7 months old and boy has it been a challenge but so much fun and so worth it. He is wary of strangers but quick to change his mind if I tell him it’s okay. If you do the work from early puppyhood they are so loyal, loving and sweet. Definitely a dog that takes loads of work and time to raise right which definitely means it’s not for most people! They are powerful and need a strong, firm but still gentle leader. They test you often and you have to be tough enough to take it. 🙌🏻

Grat content! I don't have a corso but have always wanted one. I decided on an Olde English Bulldogge because they're a little smaller, but I really do love the corsos and who knows, may still get one down the line

"Battle Tanks", good comparison. Their history is fascinating; I've researched it once and found writings from Roman historians of back in the day, describing how the generals of the ancient Roman armies used them: Sending groups of them as (like you say, Garret) front line storm troups. Dogs were armored with metal chest plates and their armor had spikes on top. Purpose of that being to, sorry the grueling imagery, gut the enemy's horses: The dogs were trained to run underneith the horses. Some texts claim the dogs had pots of burning oil stripped to their armor when they were sent off into what probably was a kamikaze mission.

I have a two year old female at about 150 she’s a beauty! Best dog ever happiest baby ever ! Had her since she was a puppy and guard is right but baby at heart and her breeder told me the right face is good bread cane corso , my baby is full bred Blue brindle and doesn’t have the loose lips but gosh he’s GORGEOUS

The Cane' Corso is a dog that is being ruined in my opinion let me explain. I owned this breed when nobody and I mean nobody knew of this breed outside of the working dog circles and finding one for sale or a breeder willing to take you serious was a job in itself but , I got lucky being on the fringe of said aforementioned circles to be entrusted with my first female Cane' Corso second pick of the litter she was a specimen 130lbs and absolutely fearless to anything and I mean anything . the real corsi out there are not pets for 95% of the populous period . since AKC recognition with all the BS that goes along with the show ring scene along with all the degenerate backyard breeders out for just the $$$ the litters will bring with no regard to temperament , health, stability do your research people and be honest with yourselves

As long as you are a dominant owner these dogs are great. This is definitely not a first time dog owner dog but of you have had a few power breeds I couldn't imagine a better pup.

We have a 19 week old Corso we trained her to sit and wait to have her mouth wiped after eating and drinking. She has a bell. I have a 5 year old son. I feel like I also have a 3 year old she is definitely a handful. I am on top of her 24/7 to make sure she's learning how to act around my son.

Long story short, the Corso is an Alfa breed. Even the females are Alfa's. They're high energy compared to other mastiff breeds, so they need exercise. They're also very intelligent, and strong willed (stubborn), so they need a lot of repetitive obedience work while they're young. One more thing about the Corso that makes it unique. They have fairly substantial long term memory. DO NOT discipline a Corso by hitting it. You shouldn't hit any dog, but the Corso remembers. They remember cruelty, and they will get even. Hit your Corso one day, and come home to find all of your shoes shredded the next time you're out. I know people who have learned this the hard way. This is an awesome breed, but it's certainly not for everyone. It takes an Alfa to keep an Alfa. Great videos. Thank you!

I have had some wonderful dogs throughout my life and was also blessed with different mastiff breeds I.have a male cane corso.Most of the time it.is only my dogs and myself.Ezio was socialized young.True to the breed he is my personal bodyguard.Always watchful and by my side he also has a heart of gold.He exhibits.with my much smaller and older dog.being gentle and kind.I share your apprecition of these wonderful dogs.I agree they should only be owned by individuals willing to invest in training and have the complete understanding of their courage and unsurpassed power.I am a very small woman but l.have always believed in secure fencing.I.feel blessed to have the opportunity to share my life with this breed of dog.Beautiful dogs you have and enjoyed your videos.I hope anyone thinking of this breed will watch your videos and take your advice to heart

Coming from the Uk my friend ! Very good little docu on the c corso. I have a cross breed and she looks like a lot more pit bull in her head , which is weird as she’s a cross with a Tibetan mastiff 🤣. But either or she’s the nicest kindest dog I’ve ever known and I’ve had many. Totally agree on your analysis on dog though and I’m definitely getting a full breed soon great to watch, 👍🏻👍🏻❤️

I love how you say you have to be a certain type of person to have a Cane Corso. We have a 13mo old Cane corso who looks almost identical to the solid black corso you AR standing with and he needed a seriously stubborn patience loving and a means business person to train control command and respect him. He does great with me all 5ft 115lbs of me but had no issue with bulling thru my 6ft 180 husband. He was a major handful from about 5 to 8 mo. He bucked up on me I believe a total of 5x. He is so goofy in that he will jump all 4paws off the ground over a bug but if a stranger gets to close to myself or my children in a way that he feels is skep he will and does react. The only bad thing about that in our case is that he does not discriminate the age of the person if another child comes over and does something aggressive to one of my children he reacts in a very similar way as to if it were an adult. This means for us that we can never take him to the park with our children off of a leash and we have to always make sure that he is never being walked up to buy anyone now Granite he is a Cane corso and they do have that very serious demeanor so it is very rare that anyone does come over which I greatly appreciate. He is great with all my kids from age 20 to age 2. He is very tolerant of the things small kids do to dogs. Our baby is definitely not a happy to lucky dog. He is aloof cares very little about people in general. He loves to play and just sit near his family he doesn't prefer to be cuddled but will tolerate being petted some. He is great and worth the work that I put in. We will be getting another!

I have a 23 month old female, Sasha. My son 16 is slightly Autism and train her to be a service dog for that. She comforts babies has been everywhere with me, library, stores family court, schools.Golden Corral etc. Not one issue. She's around 120 and 30 or so at the shoulder.

Good points all around. Cane Corso is not a first owner dog. Yet, if your heart is really stolen by this breed, make certain that both, you and your dog get trained by a professional dog trainer, attend puppy obedience classes, socialize. This actually makes sense for the first time owners of Cane Corso, golden retrievers, and Papillions. Now, a few words for criticism. The Italian import is gorgeous. Insofar as the “American version”of Cane Corso - one would think that it makes sense, for such a new breed in the USA, for American breeders to adhere to the IKC standard for at least 25 -50 years, to learn and to perfect the breed in collaboration with the Italian and other European breeders. The standards are there for a breed-specific reason. I don’t know of any breed that was improved in the US in this manner, as compare to the original European specimens. Yet, it appears to me ,that some breeders in the US are chasing size by injecting a fair dose of a Neoplaton Mastiff in the Cane Corso. I don’t know that for a fact, but I suspect that by looking at the first dog. There is no way a Cane Corso male should be 180lbs with such highly developed dewlaps. Secondly, hundreds of molosses clad in armor, unleashed by the Roman soldiers, charging enemy formations - that doesn’t make any sense historically, it is a myth. These dogs would be extremely easy to kill, this practice would be stupidly expensive, impractical,and completely ineffective. Don’t believe me? Think about how expensive the armor was at the time for a man! Still not convinced-conduct an experiment- put 2 or 3 or 5 Cane Corso males together. See what happens. A Roman army, like any other army in the antiquity or now, spends > 99% of time not in battles but doing mundane stuff. Hence, those dogs, were indispensable in guarding, patrolling, scouting, convoying and retrieval of escapees. They were also very popular as gladiator dogs, battling lions, tigers, bears and wolves. Some say that 4 of molosses could bring down a tiger. I don’t think it is possible, but it is a testament to their strength and ferocity.

Under bite is acceptable but I believe its very minimal. Our cane corso has a sizzor bite. Def not for everyone. I use the mini educator. I walk him no leash. Socialized at very young age. Best dog ever!

Well back in the 1970-1980s the boxer gene was breed into the cane corso. That's where you get the fighter slimmer looks alongside these markings: brindle,chestnut,red colors to dust it,tighter feet lower backs but that's within the American lines. They are considered by most breeders the middle Line backer of the football leagues cause they are fast, strong,stubborn and go for miles running without really tiring out.

my Corso has a high prey drive. My wife had him out in the yard on a leash. He saw a cat and drug my wife over 49 feet acrost the lawn on her belly. super powerful. very loving ,intelligent, easy to train and excellent guard dog

It’s a hard sell to say “these are monsters” when the dog is acting so well behaved and well trained in the background. Just understand the amount of work it took to get him like this.

We got our fitst Cane Corso, we raised an Engilsh Mastiff from puppy to her last breath. So we are experienced with the Extra Large dogs. Our CC is only 4 months old we got her when she was 11 weeks old. She is very hyper and playfull. It will take more training than with our English mastiff to get her where we want her. Great dog so far.

My cane corso is very well trained with the e collar. Even well trained with strangers if they move to quickly he will not hesitate to snap.

I’ve had shepherds,Akita and now a cane corso,totally agree these dogs are not for the average dog enthusiast they are powerful,they are very protective of their household,my Prince is 3 yrs,145 lbs,broad chested,large head and big boned,when he leans on you he will push you away and yes at 3yrs only my wife and I,he tolerates,everyone else are strangers,I have to be with him when anyone visits,though retired I have given up every thing to be with my corso ,that’s why I say,a corso is not a dog to be kenneled or chained,he not destructive though any thing that crawls or enter his property is destroyed,saying this I will not part with my corso for anything,as I write he is at my side where he always wants to be,good life to all corso owners

What if you have a mix? Is the temperament going to get more relaxed?

Cane Corso's are amazing dogs, drooling yes but it's manageable. The Westminster dog show had a great group of Corso. I'm an Equestrian so I'm used to noticing every body movement and catching things before they happen, which helps with a Corso. You have to be a very aware and confident owner, you must socialize them starting young. You need to keep up with training and exercise, I wouldn't recommend a Corso to anyone that isn't experienced in guardian breeds and can't commit to continuing exercise, his mind & body, training, love & discipline. They need to be part of your family. If you can commit to everything they need to thrive, they are amazing, intuitive, loving dogs. The best IMHO ❣

I was not a fan of you calling them monsters but the more I listened to your video I felt that it was a with purpose. Novice or uneducated people in the market would hear you say monster and maybe think twice about getting a Corso. So, I salute you and appreciate the great videos.

I really enjoyed your two videos. I've done my research and decided to buy one from a reputable breeder and should have her in about six months. You now make me question my decision after watching the videos. It would seem the dog would only be a good choice for the rare and exceptional 1% of owners. I hope that I fall in small pool.

I am a 63 year old single retired woman and currently own a 20 month old Blue Corso named Severus. He is my second of this breed and I will never own another breed. They can be trying to put it mildly but if you have the time and patience to spend wirh them they will be the best investment you'll make for you and your family. My guys were great with strangers and other dogs due to socializing. Unfortunately these dogs are becoming more and more popular and are beginning to be victim to the backyard breeding program and vad owners that gave the pitbull an atrocious and undeserved bad reputation. Truly best breed in the world. I currently have 2 males that are liter mates aka brothers who aren't snipped and they are 6 years old and they get along better than any fixed or non fixed males I've ever seen. Never had any type of fighting that went a hair to far. I've had pits, boxers , and bulldogs thru out the years and they just don't compare. The intelligence and the way they watch and guard the house or how they are with children. In trying to breed my larger 1 so I'll always have a puppy from him for yhe rest of my life. I think Cane Coro are a hobby, not a pet. Their temperament and nerves vary a lot from breeder to breeder; health, too.

I think that it’s good that you point out that there is a big difference between American CC and the Italian/European CC! I live in Sweden and my CC looks like the Italian line! Is a American CC really a CC or is it a new breed?

Nice vid sir. Ive been breeding Cane Corsos for a few years now and absolutely love the them. I agree with you that they are not for everyone. They are a serious dog for serious people only. You made a comment about battle tanks. I have recently got into and have started to breed Boerboels. You should have a look at them. I consider as you the Corso is a Pit Bull on steroids. In saying that the Boerboels are Corsos on steroids. Every bit as driven with high energy but on average the males will be about 50+ lbs heavier. The are true guarding giants. Still love my Corso though lol

Are there different bloodlines as in German Shepherd? Pet/show dogs and working dogs? How do they go with other breeds in the household?

My girl is 18 months old and she is half Corso and half Dogue de Bordeaux Mastiff. She is a dark red brindle and looks like a Corso but the mouth is not as square as a purebred Corso. She also has an extra fold on her neck that I attribute to a DDB. She is 105 lbs and 25 inches tall. We live in a busy city and I must say it has been a challenge living around lots of people and dogs walking on the street. But she is the best dog ever and I would not trade her for anything. It takes her a while to meet and accept new people but once she does, she loves them to death. Since she was five months old she has gone to a special dog daycare as often as I can take her, and she loves it and they love her

My sister tried to train her Cane Corso pure positive and he walked all over her until she stopped and now he’s a little bit better.

My ex had a Cane Corso. She was 7 years old when I met her, and not well socialized. He was wary to let me be in the home alone with her/without him or his kids that grew up with her. She ended up accepting me in her "pack" and I was able to be alone with her after 6 months. I'm about 100 lbs and she was about 120. I can't wait to have one of my own. She was extremely protective of me, standing in front of me if strangers came over (and ironically NOT my ex). I never felt safer than when she was protecting me. (He specifically trained her to be meaner btw. Not how I would do it personally. I should have realized the red flag that gave. I think she loved me because I was affectionate but also very firm in my commands that they already had set. "Attack" was one I never had to use thankfully. These dogs are NOT for first time dog owners.)

Great video, Long story short, I went to someone who had a Cane, dude this dog was as tall as a 6.5 foot metal gate fence. He loved his owner but he could not see another dog because he would kill them😱
