Spot on. I own this lens for many years. Now use the STM version. My combo is also the same i.e., with 5D Classic and 5DII. One more property. Accidentally, I dropped it sideways from 4 feet height on concrete floor of my bedroom. Surprisingly, it survived that shock and working normally!

Love you being here man sharing stories. I also slipped on some mud and landed on the camera right on this lens. Nothing happened to it, or the camera .

Thanks for sharing your experiences. This video is very useful in that I am no longer drooling about 40mm f2.8 and 50mm f1.4. Two questions... 1. Would you recommend a wider lens for traveling (like 35mm or 28mm), and if so, which wide angle lens do you prefer? 2. You mention at the end of video you would be talking about how to care and handle the 50mm f1.8 to keep it in pristine condition but you never mentioned it. I am getting this lens because you give such a great review nut now I am nervous about the mis-handling it. Do share the tip please. Thanks.

Welcome to my tiny channel. These videos, I should plan them out more , I forgot to mention how to take care of it, sorry about that . Lets get down to it then. 1. I would recommend 35mm on a full frame for travelling. But every 35mm that has any good bokeh is very expensive , even the 35mm f2 IS. Sometimes while travelling you may need that shallow depth of field to capture portraits of people you just met or be in a low light situation where f1.4 may help. Every focal length with low aperture except 50mm is expensive and heavy, with full frame it gets heavier. I get around to wide shots by just pulling out my phone while travelling for example in car, groups etc. and for amazing moments , the 50mm does it well. 2. The main cause for any problem on the 50mm is the small gap on the front where the outer ring is with the writing and the lens that moves. Dust gets in and ruins the lens. I carry a small pointy art brush which I use to get rid of dust after every time I take this out for a day. This is a strong lens, I once slipped on mud and landed on the lens with my camera and my whole body's weight on it, it works fine. There is a reason 50mm f1.8 is cheap . It is a good source of Canon Revenue. Everyone who is fed up of 18-55 will go for the most cheap upgrade or move to prime will get this lens. Even the new RF mount has a version of it having similar optics with different Flange Distance. Its a winning formula for them and they kept updating it. The 40mm f2.8 is excellent in its quality for images but if you stop the 50mm to f2.8 you will get similar results. At f4 50mm is one of the sharpest lens out there. I know its a bit long, but I hope this helps and hope you will enjoy it. You will have to accept its flaws like having a plastic body and a bit busy looking bokeh. I have owned all the nifty fifty canon has made, It has been with me through good and bad.

@@SuperSlackOff Thanks for reply. Another question: The lens does not auto retract when powering off the camera. I've heard from others that one should manually retract to lowest position when not in use... otherwise, the AF motor would forget its setting and focus wrong and worse when bumped the lens it might hurt the AF motor. Do you ever had this problem? I can't believe Canon would design a lens like that and I am pretty sure I would not remember to do that every time.

Its true, it remains extended . But as long as you dont bump into things you can keep it extended even when off. Its not fragile as it looks. The only thing I would worry about is back focus issue . You will have to check with your camera for perfect focus by trying out different ones at the store or make sure your camera has micro motor adjustment settings which most dont. Once you find a sharp one that works with your body , your good to go.

Great video. Love my 50mm 1.8, on both my apsc and full frame. Works great for video with dual pixel AF.
