Canon inkjet printers: how to reset the Waste Ink Counter

Resetting the waste ink absorber on a Canon printer can resolve some error codes that appear when turning it on. How to solve the full waste ink pad error message on Canon printers.
- Make sure the printer is turned off.
- Press and hold the Resume button (triangle inside a circle).
- Whilst it is held down, hold down the Power button. The green led light should come on.
- Keep the Power button held down. Release the Resume button.
- Press the resume button twice. Some lights on the control panel will blink.
- Release the Power button.
- When the light is green, Press the Resume button four times and then press the Power button straight after to confirm the selected action (Reset Counter Absorber).
- The printer will turn off.
- Turn the printer on again.
- The counter should be reset

Thank you - this works for an MP220 BUT you have to wait until the LED panel reads "idle" before you press the resume button 4 times, otherwise it doesn't work.

Well, it didn't work for my MG2120. But thanks for giving me hope, brief though it was. Had me filled with both anticipation and dread. Kind of like buying a lottery ticket. Guess it's time for a new printer.

I couldn't get it to work on my PIXMA MX860. Is there is different process for clearing the counter on that printer, which has a similar looking "Stop" button instead of a "Resume" button)?

I don't know any other method to reset it. There are programs to reset it but they are not free

Hi, Did not work on MB2160. The on/off button and stop button (red triangle in circle) are on opposite sides of the front panel. only 1 coloured light. could not press the the red/resume button 4 times due to error message showing - but I did try. Could you please check the method for a MB2160?

I haven't tried this yet with my MG6821 but there does not appear to be a place on the printer where a green LED light will be displayed. Should I try it anyway?

Hi viandan5! my printer is MP640. I did press the resume button 4 times after the LED panel reads “idle”, it did not print a page and “idle” display won’t go away. I assume reset is failed. Can I please have your advice?

This method does not work in every Canon printer, I think it failed. I don't know any other method to reset the Canon counter

Did not work with my MG3520. Seeing a service tool in several places but not comfortable downloading it. My printer uses 240 and 241 cartridges as luck has it I had just replenished and installed. Bought an Pixma MG3620 for $59.99 which uses the same cartridge. This feels criminal. Cleaning the absorber pad was a cup of water, paper towel and a pair of tweezers for a five minute exercise.

I think you have to reinstall the driver.then the absorber has to be cleaned

It worked for my MX495... but ⚠WARNING⚠ : it work one time and the printer is bricked if you turn off and try to turn on again... you can turn on again with previous error code (5B04) if you disconnect the power cable and press power button for few seconds (20s).WARNING

Hallo I have a canon ip7250 printer.. when i follow the intrustructions... after pressing the RESUME button twice, The light keeps blinking.And when i try pressing 4times the printer goes into service mode, thereafter after pressing the power button, it GOes Off and does not power on unless after a long period of over 30mins... what could be the real problem??

are you sure that the waste ink container is not full? you can reset the counter if the waste ink pad in not completely full

Didn't work for Canon MP990. I can't do hard reset because I would have to download a new driver and Canon doesn't support this model. The only option is to dismantle printer or buy a new one. I did see idle on LED. The light was blue instead of green.

Unplug the printer from the power plug, leave it for an 10 minutes. then plug the power cord on the power plug and switch on the printer. Press and hold the power button for 4.5 seconds. Then press the “Stop” button Twice. Repeat this procedure one more time. This time keep in your mind that slowly release the “Power” button. Press the “Stop” four times. But the error 6000 could be caused by several reasons, probably a reset will not solve the problem

I had called canon assist before in found these direction and he had me do a hard reset and it did not work then said it had to be sent in or get a new one . I wander f the hard reset might have locked everything up because it did not work with this this procedure on the G-4200

Try this: Press and hold RESUME button, press and hold POWER button. The buzzer will sound once. While holding down the POWER button, release the RESUME button. Press the RESUME button 3 times. Press the POWER button.

Which mechanical button? Remove the power cord, then press and hold the Power button and reconnect the power cord. When the printer comes on, release the button. Wait five seconds and push "Power" button again. This should reset the "Ink Absorber Full" error code.

If the waste ink pads are really full of ink, this method could not work. You have to clean them before the reset.

It "should be reset". How can I tell if it has been reset? Also it's not the résumé button it's the resume (pronounced ree-zoom) but I digress. Does this work on an MX922?

It could be a defective sensor, or the flag of the panel is broken, or the connector of the sensor is detached

I need to make my printer (Canon PIXMA MG3650S) forget the chips of my cartridges, because it says they are empty, although I have refilled them. Any help? Likewise. I've been trying to locate a copy of Canon's Service Tool to fix my MX870 but no success yet. Did find and buy a $7 copy from eBay but chose not to use it, because it required download from a Russian cloud storage site (Yandex), extraction using a Russian zip utility (RAR), and disabling local antivirus at install-time. That's three strikes. Will advise this thread and please your or anyone advise if you are able to source a clean copy of the Service Tool. Thanks!

Dont buy a G6030 series model. They cannot be reset. When I try and reset everything...it basically locks me out of access from Wifi and settings. Anyone else have this issue?

I bought this printer ru-vid.comUgkxciSwynMJ7PnUvvx11rewiu-yFBkZTl53 to replace an aging HP printer. It is just used for casual home printing so I don't need anything more. Installation went easily though the HP Smart Printing doesn't work well with our laptops - having to select the actual device. Will have to see how the HP Instant Ink program works out. Plus haven't been able to set up printing from smartphone yet - either direct or WiFi
