Glad the $25 400mm birding lens worked for you. Back in 2005, when I needed a long lens for wildlife, birding, photojournalism, documentary, sports, and surveilance, I purchased a used Tokina AT-X 400mm f/5.6 auto focus (72mm filter size) lens for $260. The lens was good looking and in excellent condition, the auto focus was fast and worked well, but the image quality was less than ideal. After 5-years of use, I replaced it with a used Nikkor 400mm f/5.6 AI manual focus (72mm filter size) lens for $567.12. The lens was in excellent condition, the manual focus was good enough for me, and the image quality was excellent.

That 400mm focal length gives the appearance of 640mm on your m50's crop sensor!

I'm so excited I found your videos on vintage lenses. I just received an M50 Mk II for christmas and was a little daunted at the cost of lens options. The next day and a relatives remembering their camera kit from 40 years ago. Boom! an old spotmatic f with a 28mm, 55mm, 85-200mm and a 400mm, in fact the very one in this video. Amazon should drop on the adapter on friday. Thanks!

Using a 300-400 lens in streets is awesome. People and animals have no idea you are there so you can have amazing natural portrait. Same at a Skatepark, you can catch someone in the bowl 50 feet away and it will look like you were super close, the type of photo you couldnt have otherwise. The biggest issue with those vintage lens, it's quite heavy when you have 2-3 of them in your backpack lol

I got one on Black Friday from Amazon. Although it’s not razor sharp, I totally agree with you about the use of it as vintage. I think of it as organic in a way, pure, and it allows you to discover the “art” of photography and enjoy a very interesting side to things. Great review.

Love vintage glass. I picked up a Canon nFD 300mm f2.8 for under $500. Something modern in that focal range is $3000-5,000. Using it for astrophotography which is all manual anyway it is absolutely fantastic! 124mm front element too! Talk about huge.

Yesterday I bought a box with: - A Nikon EM camera with the extra grip motor, it needs some cosmetic cleaning - A Nikon F2 in perfect condition - A Nikkor lens 28mm f3.5 (perfect internals, even no dust, but exterior need cleaning) - A Vivitar Series 1 35-85mm f2.8 (good condition, no marks, no fungus, no dust) - A Vivitar 400mm f5.6 (very good condition, a bit of dust inside) All for 160usd. I think it was a good price. The 400mm is very good, I thought it would be a disaster but at F8 it works very very well, I need more to evaluate better, but at first glance is a good surprise. It's my first telephoto above the 200mm and it makes me think about getting a camera with IBIS. Try to focus handheld a 400mm without stabilization is a struggle, but with tripod or even monopod it's ok.

I have a Tokina 500mm f/5.8 with drop in filters and the original leather cases for the whole set. VERY nice and very rare. I bought it cheap when the manual focus market crashed. Actually have 2 moving boxes full of old lenses I bought off Goodwill for $5 to $10 each. Now Goodwill wants an easy $10 just for "handling" even if you pick it up. People know their lenses now so really good deals are hard to find anywhere these days. That Tokina 400mm f/5.8 is a nice lens find at a great price....

Just a though in case anyone finds it useful - EF 70-300 IS ii goes for $550 new or down to $400 used and gives you up to 485mm full frame equivalent if you use a standard adapter to get it onto the M50. Obviously more expensive than the vintage lens in this video, but I’ve found it to be quite sharp], the reach is usually sufficient in most birding situations, and the AF is insanely fast. Overall, I couldn’t recommend it more highly as a beginner birding lens. My only complaint is I wish it were better in low-light situations (it only gets down to F4 when fully zoomed out and even then, need to slow shutter speed down to get good shots on super overcast days), but for the money, I think it’s a perfect intro lens.

If you're using an adapter with a glass element switch if you can to the type that doesn't have one to increase sharpness. That change might also increase your focal length which would be a plus for bird photography. I wouldn't be afraid of unscrewing the front element for cleaning. A tripod and cable release are really needed for best results but for some stupid reason some cameras don't provide the ability to such releases.

I have seen other users say that this lens paired with a 2x teleconverter is a good option for shots of the moon - with the M50 it would be equivalent to a 1280mm lens with a full frame camera (400mm x 1.6 crop factor x 2 converter). This gets the moon to fill about half the frame meaning that less cropping is needed, and the moon is bright enough that the drop in minimum aperture to f/11 due to the converter is not an issue. Also because you can take time to focus manually the lack of autofocus doesn't matter either. Any thoughts? I found this lens for £72 used, the adapter to the M mount was about £25 and the teleconverter was £10. Total £107 which seems like a bargain.

I use a Nikkor 180mm AI f2.8 on a em1 mkIII and have a vivitar 2x teleconverter. On MFT with the 2x that puts me at F11 wide open at 720mm equivalent. Works great with focus peaking. It’s awesome for shooting insects. Like a Macro from 3 feet away. It’s very sharp without the 2x. Especially when I stop the lens down to 5.6. It’s still a 5.6 360mm wide open. Depth of field and color really pop. Focus is a bit narrow wide open. I paid like $90 for all of with the adapter. I also have a new .71 speed booster and get good results. I have to really stop down for infinity focus. It cost twice as much It is amazing on my Nikkor 50mm 1.4 non ai.

So really with the crop factor that’s 640mm equivalent? I was thinking of getting one of the native lenses that can go to 200mm but that’s half the reach. Again Mark, another thought provoking video. I have a new 100-400mm Sigma, but it is rather heavy. When I was last into photography on film I bought a Tamron Adaptall 2 54B 300mm F/5.6 Lens to use with my Olympus set up. The lens is very light and if I'm honest, would be easier to lug round on my mobility scooter.
