First comment, yay....I just got the m50 and I love it. I use the feiyutech a1000 gimbal and I am super satisfied with the results. Checkout the video "Nicole gets in a fight" on my channel for some footage of the m50 and the gimbal. Awesome work jen....

Sorry Jen, you're wrong about why I am watching this! I'm already invested in Pany G4, G5 & G5s as well as a Crane 1 and a Ronin S gimbal. I've watched most of your vids and find you delightful, engaging and committed to helping others. Doesn't hurt that you are based in a favorite city, New Orleans... The Ronin S is ideal for my pany's. I can stop/start from handle and several of my lenses can be focused with the wheel. Another consideration is the ability to mount on tripod (almost all gimbals) and use joystick for much smoother panning than I can achieve with my $200-300 video heads and meager skill. This level of smooth panning is achievable with heads in the $600-1000 range so I'd rather spend it on the Ronin-S.

hi jen, I have been using the crane 2 with my m50 and a sigma 18-35 for quite a while, always with the external focus motor, which is working well, but this setup is nearly on top of the gimbals weight capacity. (because of the sigma and the focus motor the gimbal got too much front weight, that for I had to add xtra weight behind the cam) I never had the idea to connect the cam via cable with the gimbal, but as you said it - it works like charm! focus puller is even tighter and I have access to other controls as well (av, tv, iso, + - ) Leme say it, I share your excitement :)

I think this might work only if the sigma and the EF-M adapter can communicate with each other. May want to check and see if the Sigma fully functions the way canon ef lenses do.

Hey! I've been sick!!! :( - the Crane-2 controls the following features with Canon: aperture, shutter, and ISO. Just be sure to attach the correct cable from the Crane-2 box. Cheers!

Awesome job. I’ve been going back and forth on this camera. I do mostly videos and was thinking this or the Sony A6300. I was wondering how it was in low light

It is pretty good in low light but not as good as my Sony A7iii (I'm sure partially due to sensor size). I've heard really nice things about the 6300 for low light, but the 6300 won't have that focus magic with the Crane-2 and there isn't a touch screen either, which I really love having, especially when a gimbal is involved. Thanks for the question. I would think so only if it's fully automatic. Does that lens adapter already work electronically with the camera? I would think that might be a good rule of thumb. Good luck!

I got the Feiyutech g6 plus coming. It should be able to do this as well. Would be a cheaper setup. Zhiyun Crane-2 is expensive. That being said I have not received it yet so cant confirm yet.

Hey Jen! I can confirm it works and can balance the m50 very well with kit lens or prime lens. Larger lens might be a issue. One small problem is the g6 is a smaller gimbal so the viewfinder on the m50 is in the way for switching to inverted mode. The solution is to just use the joystick to rotate the camera all the way around until it is upside down. Then film upside down and flip the image in post. I guess it's up to each person if that's a deal breaker or not.

Hey Jen, great vid! I have a M50 and I am thinking about getting a Crane 2. Did you find any problems using the M50 with the Crane 2, considering the m50 is very close to the minimum weight capacity of the Crane 2 (500 gr)? Cheers from Brazil!

Thanks so much for the question. I didn't see any problems at all but I haven't used it in extreme conditions (running, etc.). My suggestion would be to add a little weight if need be, by adding a mic on top or if you need something low profile, a cheese plate. Hi Jen, nice video. Did you have to do anything in particular to get the wheel to work?? I can not seem to get mine to work. I have everything connected correctly, set the M50 on manual focus, and even updated the firmware for the crane 2. Just wondering if I'm possibly over looking a step. Thanks.

I know there were two different Canon cables in the crane-2 box. Maybe make sure you have the correct one. Also, maybe check the lens you are using and make sure it's a Canon-m and if it's a canon ef, that the lens is set to manual too. hope this helps and feel free to comment with specs if you need more help.

Hi. I would like to know if in addition to setting focus with the Follow Focus Controller, you can start/stop recording with the ON/OFF & Video button. And, with the gimbal turned on can you see live view in the monitor?. Thanks for your replay.

Cool video, Jen. Just got a Crane 2 and, as another person mentioned, it won't establish communication with the M50 I have. When it worked for you, did it show you a menu on the Crane 2 screen for the camera? I'm getting nothing but gimbal modes. I upgraded the Crane 2 firmware and the M50 to Version 1.0.2, and my menu doesn't show all of the options you have. I'm wondering if anyone knows if Canon firmwared the Crane compatibility right out of the M50? At least I have the mechanical follow focus to use though. : )

I'm not often surprised by the things Canon will do to corner their consumers. I know for a fact that I updated the Crane prior to filming the video, but I think I just opened the M50 out of the box, no updates done. Make sure you are using the correct cable and maybe make sure you are in the correct mode. I found the camera selection selection in the menu of the crane, so you should be able to find it there, even if Canon did something tricky. good luck!

Jen w/ Stay Posh Thanks for the reply, Jan. Silly me, I figured it out. I had to go into the crane 2 settings menu under “camera” and select “Canon”. The Crane 2 manual is pretty thin on guidance. Now that I figured it out, everything works fine. Thanks again for the cool videos.

Thank you so much for this info! Even on the Zhiyun website it is not clear if this combination works. After seeing your video I ordered the M50 and the 2nd hand Crane2 :-) I noticed you need at least firmware 1.77. My gimbal arrived with 1.73 and that didn't work with the M50. I am stuck with one problem though. The shutter button on the crane doesn't work in MF-mode, only in AF mode. And in film mode it doesn't work at all, even though I programmed the shutter button on the camera to start recording video as well. Anyone found a way around this? Since I use my camera mainly for filming, it would be nice if I could start and stop recording through the gimbal button instead of the shutter button on the camera.

I think you have to use the cable. Not sure Crane-2 has bluetooth. And yes, the Crane-2 operates the focus for the Canon M50. You could probably attach their follow focus too but not sure why you would need to. Let me know if I didn't understand the question and I'll do my best to answer! Thank you for this video. For some reason though, my USB control wasn't working with this cable and my M5. Like it goes into some sort of USB connect but not control. Is there a setting to be changed? The Canon cables from Zhiyun have otherwise worked great with my 80D and 7Dii.

Glad you like the video! I'm not sure about the M5, but the M50 worked fine. Maybe try updating the firmware but honestly, it could be that the M5 processor won't work the same way the M50 will with the Crane-2. Good luck and thanks for watching!

Hi Duke. I don't have the dual grip, but I would recommend updating the firmware for BOTH the Crane-2 and your wireless remote. Updating has always helped me in the past with the Crane. Good luck and thanks for watching!

Hi. Great review. Got both the M50 and Zhiyun Crane 2. But when I attached the M50 onto the crane 2 it started shaking. I think the M50 is just too light for the Crane 2. Do I need to adjust settings on the crane2?

Thanks for the comment. I did not encounter shaking and I had a pretty light lens added. Maybe update the firware and make sure you have it balanced right. Try lowering the "z adustment" (the one that allows you to raise and lower the camera straight up and down). Good luck!

hmmm, not sure. My guess would be yes if it's fully compatible (meaning you can use touch focus and the Dual Pixel AF), but if this lens isn't completely compatible, I would say the odds are it's a no. Be sure to make sure whatever lens you get, you are either using the Canon lens adapter featured in this video or you are getting a EF-M mount lens. The Canon M50 has a different mount that the Canon EF series

Hi. Tanks for your video (I got an M50 too). I understand that is not possible zoom from the gimbal. But when you are “up and running” can you manually touch the lens and zoom? The Crane 2 can be damaged? Tanks

You can touch the zoom and it won't damage the gimbal. It may throw the weight off a little (thereby making the motors in the gimbal work harder) and you may see a little shake when you touch the camera, but you can zoom manually.

@Sites4sight Multimedia first of all the lens will have to support electronic zoom. The kit lens does not do this. The other option you could attach an external servo to the camera. Zhiyun does make an external servo but it's meant to be used for follow focus not zoom. So unsure if it could work.

The control cable came with the Crane-2 and is one of the two labeled Canon. Check this video and I hold up the exact one to use.

Hey :) Can you tell me if the Crane 2 "fully" supports the M50? I have the M50 and think about buying the Crane 2, but looking at the list provided by Zhiyun, the M50 is not listed as being supported?!

You can control the focus, shutter, ISO, aperture, and shutter speed as long as the cable is hooked up and you have it in the Canon setting. If you have trouble, update firmware. Hope this helps!

Try adjusting the Tilt Axis down a bit. Have you checked out the crane-2 manual on how to balance?
