Dude, this video was so helpful! I just took a couple out to practice shooting this past weekend, and had a lot of problems with the camera focusing on what it wanted to focus on... instead of what I wanted it to. Had no idea I could just tap the screen to select a focus point. Also, disabling continous autofocus was a lifesaver. Thanks so much!
I have watched this video tutorial several times and I always learn something. It's the best video tutorial on this subject and a great way to refresh our knowledge of our camera capabilities. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise.
Yes - liveview uses a good amount of juice - both the display running (it is the resolution of a small desktop monitor) and the constant power to the sensor. The tricky bit about the viewfinder is showing what I am seeing, will see what I can do. Thanks!
at 6:33 I show this. I found out that they cannot be changed via the button and wheel method in live view but the button and wheel DO work when looking through the viewfinder.
Number of shots left on the SD card until it is full. The camera estimates the shots remaining but each shot can vary a good deal based on the scene, so sometimes the resulting file size is small enough that it doesn't count toward an image taken. Hope that helps. I have lots more tips and always happy to answer questions here or on my FB page which is linked under video.
With my new Canon 700D and how badly I am struggling to figure out its settings and all, your video just made it all so easy! Thanks for this wonderful descriptive video. Look forward to more such videos.
This depends on what mode you are in. In P mode you can hold the AV button down and rotate the dial you can also touch it to show +/- 5 stops and select the desired exposure.
You have touch to shutter enabled (small icon in bottom left corner) and you currently have the camera on two second delay. Switch it back to single picture or continuous.
Sorry I missed these - Put the camera into AF quick mode, you do that by turning Live View on, pressing the Q button and selecting the AF method in the top left corner of the screen. AF Quick displays the small focus points. You touch to select the one you want. If you are not in AF Quick mode you can simply touch on the screen to focus.
You have your aspect ratio set to something other than 3:2. Probably 16:9. Aspect ratio can be changed on one of the red screens (can't remember which at the moment)
Oh absolutely- I mean it gets close most of the time - the camera wants to expose everything as 18% gray value. The reason they have full manual mode is so you have complete control over the exposure. You should pick up Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure - excellent book.
Press the recording button on the back of the camera, when the switch is ON that activates live view. When the switch is set to Video it starts a recording.
I set my T4i to Quick Mode focusing using the center focus point. I also set the focus choice to Servo AI rather than One Shot or Focus AI so I can shoot moving objects. While the AI Servo focusing doesn't work in live view with Quick Mode selected it does work if using the viewfinder. With live view off I can hold down the back button (set up for back button focusing) and move the camera from subject to subject and the camera auto focuses continuously and very quickly. Just thought I'd share that fact. Thanks, and great channel.
Turn the camera switch to ON, Set dial to A+ and press the button on the back of the camera with a red dot next to it, just above top right corner of the screen.
Re-post " Hi..Toby, I bought the Canon 700D/ T5i as my first DSLR with 18-55mm STM kit lens, 75-300mm lens & 50mm 1.8 prime lens. I followed your most videos/ tutorials and its helps me to decide which one more suits to my needs. Thanks dude!!!! I'm only using Creative mode specially Manual mode and as you said "Trail & error" was the best way to learn. Again THANKS & upload more videos."
I have a 700D, and am having trouble getting the camera to focus evenly on ALL of a scene. For example, in this video, how would I get both plants sharply in focus? Similarly, photographing two people, one in foreground, one behind- how to get both faces in focus? Thanks for the fantastic videos!
Lots of variables here so it is difficult to give a clear answer. Shoot at the widest possible aperture and increase your ISO as high as possible so that you avoid blur from capturing subjects moving or shaking the camera. I have a video on avoiding camera shake and how to figure that out - send me a message on facebook, linked under video and I can provide the link.
I have this camera and can't understand what I'm doing wrong to not get more clear pictures. I've changed some settings. However, I don't feel like they are any better than my $300 camera. Your tips are good. I'm looking for a class on this camera. I didn't pay this much money to not use it properly and get crummy pictures!
Very informative video....took me a while to figure out why my f-stop and shutter speed were not selectable via touch from the LCD like you show in the video.....camera has to be in Manual mode. (M).
I'm also uploading on my google. I found you there. If you look at the pictures, you'll see they aren't very clear. Not sure why, I really expected a more sharp image.
Hi Mrs B - what is in focus is controlled by your focus point and more importantly your depth of field. Which is controlled by your aperture - the larger the number the more that will be in focus. I have a video that explains aperture and depth of field paste this after youtube[dot]com /watch?v=TlmvlE_HLTw in the URL bar. It is important to note that the higher the number the less light reaches your sensor-so you need higher ISO or slower shutter.
Deanna, sorry to hear of the frustration. Are you using the 18-55 lens or the 18-135? Feel free to send along a sample photo or two (post on my facebook page) and I will see what I can suggest.
WB settings in the T4i - All the normal ones like Daylight, cloudy, custom where you can take WB from a sample image and you have WB Shift too. Buy from Amazon, a link under my video goes to the best prices on amazon and using the link is an easy way to thank me for my videos. Thanks and let me know if you have any questions.
Which lens are you using? I only have the kit lens that came with the camera… but I'm not sure if I will achieve the same effects. Also very helpful review, thanks a lot!
Nope the metering works in ALL modes - in Manual mode it just shows you where it thinks your exposure is in relation to the one the camera thinks is correct. In all other modes it adjusts at least one setting to put your exposure in the middle (again the one the camera thinks is most correct).
Great video as usual!! Can"t wait until you record a video on the use of the viewfinder as this topic is sorely lacking in the canon (t4i)manual. Thanks!! I"m finding that the liveview function just sucks up the battery life fast. Is this usual in this camera?
one ? when in liveview screen how do you adjust the exposure slider on the bottom middle of the screen. can this also be done by touching ? or if not which buttons do i select!! Thanks!!
Mr.PhotoRecTV How did you "locked" your *tutorial filming camera* to your canon t4i at minute 7:46 you are moving the T4i along with our view, how did you do that!!?!
I often prefer the look of Canon when the light is good. At lower light levels the Nikon is a much better camera. What kind of video will you be shooting? Your other question can be answered with my video titled "How I shoot my videos T4i - Setup, Gear & Settings" Send me a message on facebook, linked under the video if you want a link to that video.
Could you help me out, out on a walk today my display went off that shows all the information iso etc, I'm not sure how to bring it back on so can't shoot on manual. The screen itself still works as im able to look over photos taken and use it to record as a view finder
Hi, i need help. When in movie mode i see black borders at the top and bottom. Also when i look into the viewfinder i now see black line on each side. In your video, you didnt have black borders at the bottom and top while in movie mode, how do i get this? 😭plz help, thank you!
I'm not exactly sure which is your facebook page. I'm using the 18-55 lens that came standard with it. It also came with a 55-250 lens. My macro shots flat out suck...... it can't focus on the object. Is the 18-135 a much better lens??
Hi, what camera recomended me for start in the world of photographiy? this, the canon t6 or other? similar prices. For landscapes photos, moon, people and videos for youtube channel. Greetings!
Hi Toby...really excellent videos. I think that I've been watching you talk about the 5200 and T4i for almost an hour now. :-) Question...I will be using my DSLR (haven't purchased yet) for mostly video and a bit for still. I feel like the samples that I am seing online show the T41 ahead of the 5200 both in color and noise levels. Also, the audio seems a bit better with the Cannon. Are you seeing the same thing?
hey toby....I am new to dslr world and I am very confused to buy from both model, which is best model for me, I am working as marine engineer I uae to click photos in sea and some different countries, please lhelp me finding good model between canon t4i or nioon d5200. thanks
On the live view mode, you said the number in the brackets on the top left corner was the number of shots left. Does that mean the number of shots left capable of the camera itself before it goes bad? Im a bit confused. Also, I had my image on large jpeg but each time i took a picture, the number did not go down like how yours did. Is that suppose to happen? Im sorry, very new to cameras and this is my first dslr. any help would be appreciated! Thanks. :)
Does anyone knows if the live-view option in cannon 700D can be turned off. I use it in a studio with flashlight set and the preview on the rear screen is so dark (it's all set for the flashes light level) that i can't use it and the viewfinder is not comfortable enough in some angles...
Would you happen to have an idea why I'm getting vertical lines on the top and bottom of my photos when shooting in live mode & in M,AV,TV, or P? I'm stumped. =[
Are you sure it is disabled. It may just be slow to get focus and the camera won't take a phot until it gets focus. try this. On the side of the lens switch the AF MF to MF so camera won't get focus and now in live view press the shutter button. Does it take a pic right away?
You're right; If I go to MF, the shutter button works. Thanks for the tip---I'll just have to focus manually if I want to use the Live View. It's great having a resource like you around. I'm over 80 and the new technology sometimes can overwhelm you.
James Nolan Well that was just a test- you shouldn't have to only focus manually. It tells me that it is indeed having trouble focusing during live view and it won't let you take the photo. Switch the live view focusing to Flexizone single point and then touch a high contrast area - that will help it focus faster.
CameraRec Toby Switching back to AF still prevents use of regular shutter but at least I can use Lie View and shutter button using MF. I'l continue to experiment and see what results I get when I go out on a photo trek. Thanks again.
