Sounds odd to admit, but Capcom vs SNK 2 was the first 2D fighting game I physically owned. I bought it because I liked the still images in Nintendo Power. This kabuki sumo festival stage was the first level I ever played and I never forgot it. I think I chose Blanka, Ryo and Kyo iirc. (Just random characters with interesting designs.) After that sampling of the genre I became obsessed and have played everything Capcom and SNK related, before and since.
@@baberuthless It does seem more likely yes. However, due to the lack of Marvel, I could see the next CvS being made closer to Marvel in terms of aspects like at the very least gameplay and roster selection, but possibly also things like tone and stage design. CvS1 had stages not only based on real life locations but specific locales from the games as well.
I think that might not be a float of Nicotine but rather it's Zantetsu from Last Blade, given how far away it is it's almost impossible to tell. I never even noticed them until you pointed it out!
So first it was MVC Fighting Collection getting announced, then SVC Chaos shadow dropping, and now we not only have a release date for MVCFC, but now we have Fighting Collection 2 with both CVS games, Project Justice, Plasma Sword, Alpha 3 Upper, both Power Stone's, and Capcom Fighting Evolution, a lot has happened this year that's for sure. (I'm so hype for both MVC and CFC2)

I remember stumbling upon this game years ago and it became one of my personal favorites. To the point that i have the soundtrack for listening in my pile of personal music. Loved the atmosphere but it's sad that I found it much later and not during it's peak. Aomori is my favourite stage too. Has a "it's Saturday" feel that I cannot explain.
Just discovered your channel. Although this stage and its theme is not as popular as the London stage, it's one of the most played stage in tournaments. I myself don't care about its theme much, though I do like the cameos of characters. Thanks to you, I learn that there's cameos of Nicotine and Bishomon. And you're absolutely right, stages and its design and appearance are just as important to a fighting game as the characters, mechanics, and techniques themselves.
CVS2 is my top favorite fighting game of all time (at least until I play for SF6 lol). But you're right, I never really considered this stage to be well thought out. I really like your analysis of it and pointing out all of the references. My favorite CVS2 stage has always been the final stage on fire. I just love the music there, and the feel of higher stakes. Although, I wish they copied the glow from the car crash stage in CVS1 onto here. Speaking of which, my favorite stage in CVS1 is the alley way with the shadows on the background walls. Also, I think those quiet stages makes CVS2 special. I quite like the rainy rooftop and the windmill stages. Not many or probably any Capcom fighting game has this feeling of serenity; it's a very SNK thing to do, which makes it that more special.
I do think the quite stages like the windmill stage do help in breaking up the more celebratory ones. CVS1 In particular is probably my favorite set of stages in a fighting game! That’s also a good point about the lack of a fire glow effect in the shin akuma stage that would have gone a long way
Yep, that is Goro Daimon banging the drums. If you have a Kyo Kusanagi vs Benimaru Nikaido fight on this stage, he comes off the drums and moves closer to the foreground, to watch them fight. Kyo, Benimaru, and Daimon are a canonical team in the King of Fighters series.

Fun fact about this game both Ken Masters and Robert from the KOF/Art of Fighting games are the hose of the Capcom Vs Snk 2 Tournament even though Robert isn't in the game.
Did you have a source for Bishamon and Nicotine in the background? Because not only did I never notice, but apparently the ENTIRE INTERNET has never noticed. You may have actually discovered something new in this game, like 25 years later.

My favorite stages are the Osaka boss stages. The Arena shows a big screen, a lot of people watching, the sky Starting of bright which later turns dark & gray
@@baberuthless the Osaka rooftop stage where you fight Akuma or Rugal in the middle of thunderstorm with the city in the background. Then there's the Osaka burning city where you fight Shin Akuma or Ultimate Rugal where the city is burning because Akuma & Rugal destroyed the castle.
Really wish I could have helped with this video. There's ways to expand the view of the sage beyond its regular borders, remove the HUD and character sprites entirely, and rip the individual textures & animations from the background
I do appreciate that, but I typically like to keep it what the player would see in game as it is since I’m not typically boundary breaking or anything. That being said a HUD removal would be very useful for games like this
I prefer these 2D flat sprites vs the 3D fighting thats been coming out. One- characters separate firmly from the backgrounds. Two- most arent animated on two’s. Thats why i love arcsys games as they were able to do both of these
Now that I think of it, I don't think there's a single stage in CvS2 that I don't like. If I was to REALLY nitpick, I guess New York could be seen as a bit bland? But overall all the stages are great in CvS2
I agree it’s one of the few games that has bangers for everyone. The New York one is goofy but I def dig it. Gotta have the cowboy drinking a beer! Classic America all right 😂
