Excellent video, Scott. Thank you. This made me, and the issues that my family has to deal with, feel seen. Thank you. I am glad that you are growing and changing. My father discovered Captain America when he was protesting the Vietnam War and the government was trying to forbid those protests. Cap was at the time depicted as... defending the right of protesters to protest. What appears nowadays as a very mild, neutral, non political cause was, at the time, very controversial and divisive. And comic books weren't afraid of taking a stance on such issues.

I think the real problem is comics that seek to berate it's readers instead of trying to convince them. Nearly everyone in America was on the same -page hating Nazi during WWII and still are. Yeah, it's nothing. He just assumed it. No actual proof Kirby knew the Golem story. Like I've said above, I could make a video about how Alan Moore's use of the hydrogen atom (the periodic table's 'letter A') on Doctor Manhattan's forehead is symbolic of the Golem, too. But there's no evidence of that either. Nerdsync didn't make up the Golem analogy. He got it from this book: "“Up, Up, And Oy Vey! How Jewish History, Culture, and Values Shaped the Comic Book Superhero” by Simcha Weinstein, Leviathan Press, 2006" where the author made it up. The author never brings up a single quote from Kirby substantiating the analogy as being true. The closest he gets is some quote where Kirby says "I got things from the Bible" (the Golem myth is not from the Bible). Weinstein is just an over-eager Orthodox Jewish comic book fan, trying to add more Jewish substance to his hero. There's no question that the American superhero archetype was created mostly by Jews, and it should be celebrated for that. This just isn't one of the things that can be actually proven about it.

@@heroineburgh There is room for how one's point of view leads to the perception of the character. I myself have been a long time fan of Cap and hold him as my favourite hero because he was grounded in the real world threat of the Nazis. However I also made some assumptions, knowing that Kirby and Simon were Jewish (as were many creators in the comic book field in the 1930s/1940s) I also envisioned Cap's fictional creator to be Jewish with the name of Abraham Erskine. It only seemed natural that he, like the person from real life he appeared to be based on - Albert Einstein, would have fled Nazi Germany for America and offering his genius to the free world. I never made a connection between Cap and the Golem of Jewish myths of which I have been aware of from the the silent era movie. Though I have thought a modern blockbuster movie featuring the Golem taking on the Nazis is long overdue as he is a character seldom used unlike Frankenstien's monster, vampires like Dracula, werewolves, mummies etc. As for politics it is interesting that Superheroes first rose in prominence at the time of the rise of the Nazis and facist Ideology. In the modern era they have again risen in prominence this time on our screens even as the far-right, Nazi and facist ideas have had a resurgence . It is like the two values - one that all men are created equal the other of a master race - are entwined in a way that Simon and Kirby so presciently depicted on the cover of Captain America #1 fighting a never ending battle.
@navy0287
@navy0287 4 года назад
The Golem legend was said to have been one of the sources of Superman's creation since his debut in comics, but it isn't something the average fan knows about unless they're willing to do a bit more research. A lot of people aren't entirely sure how much of the Golem legend actually did influence Superman's creation, but Superman was created as a response to the political and social ills of that era. So the logic fits; especially, how his character was written during WWII. Something to consider is these Jewish comic book artists and writers created their characters and told their stories as power fantasies. They vented a lot of their concerns and their frustrations with their lives and the plight of persecuted Jews overseas. This is why Cap was punching Hitler in the face on the cover of his Debut comic; despite the fact the United States wasn't in a conflict with him yet. DC Comics payed homage to the Golem connection to Superman in a storyline from the 90's. There was a cosmic entity/villain called "Dominus" who had the power to alter reality (among other abilities on a massive scale and also alter a person's perception of reality. He used this power to make Superman obsessed with protecting the world and the people, and Superman literally took over the Earth to make sure he could protect it. In a segment of the storyline, Superman was identified by the villagers as the Golem who came to life to protect them. Dominus created several realities in a effort to find another cosmic entity Superman was protecting. Superman became the "Golem" in one of those realities.

@DejaVoodooDoll If your video is monetized, ads will show on your video, you get money from the ads that are viewed, and RU-vid gets a percentage of that money. If your video has limited monetization (which most RU-vidrs refer to as "demonetized" for some reason), then only a fraction of said ads will show on your video. You still get the same percentage of the money from those ads as before, except the total money is a lot less 'cause there's less ads. RU-vid also doesn't recommend your video as much if it has limited monetization so not as many people are seeing those ads, or even the video (RU-vid denies this despite the monumental evidence). If your video is (actually) demonetized, no ads will show on your video, so no money. Hope that helps.

Just got the chance to watch this last night, and this is a powerful video. Thank you. As a communications/media scholar who teaches at a post-secondary level, the notion that all media is political, no matter how innocuous it may seem, is something that some students have a hard time wrapping their heads around. As the granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor, please know that this video was not offensive in any way shape or form (at least to me). I may only be a focus group of one, but I think you covered this so wonderfully. 2. Thank you for not shying away from the Jewish heritage of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. With anti-Semitism on the rise, it makes me happy that you were willing to make that a central part of the story you told. 3. I'm smarter than I was before I watched this! I didn't know about the reference to the Golem in Captain America. There are other Jewish facts about comics that I know, but this is one where I was not aware. So, thanks. 4. I just need to also let you know that I think this video was handled with EXPERT and WONDERFUL hands. I liked and "liked" the video, but I do have to comment on something. I understand that part of the point of this video is to address the shortcomings that you yourself have had throughout your time making videos, and that the snippets where you interrupt the narration with your own commentary on the video are part of the "video essayist RU-vidr aesthetic" and they may actually work for the theme of the video regarding owning up to past mistakes (on top of the perceived intimacy that such commentary adds), but (sorry) I believe they are not needed: You are an authentic (or perhaps more accurately authentic-looking as I don't know you in real life) person and the serious and honest way you handled the topic more than grounded your thesis in reality than your jabs at yourself. I actually liked the context given, I sort of knew the story of CA and Marvel (maybe even from your show) but I appreciated the refresher and the passing that the video got because of it. I am more than likely off base here, but I think the little comments are born out of an insecurity on your own writing or proficiency in structuring a video, that I simply don't think is warranted. They may be born out of a need to break up the rhythm of the video and not making it tiring or just a quick joke to make an information-heavy section palatable, then I did not particularly had a need for them. But I think that, even if you are learning, growing and becoming more aware of your platform and the message, you are doing good and should not second guess yourself like that if that was the reason for them. (I understand the paradox of telling someone how to structure their videos by telling them to trust themselves to know how to structure their videos, thank you very much). TL;DR You are doing your best, don’t take unnecessary jabs at yourself.

Fun story, one of my 2019 resolutions was to cut back or get rid of things that bother me. In order to do that you have to know what bothers you. You have to be consciously aware of it. I discovered that as I became more consciously aware that I was actually surrounding myself with negativity, almost obsessively. Slowly, but surely, I started to get rid of those things. A mobile game I played everyday, but always felt awful after playing. Facebook. Little things here and there. As I did that, I started to notice things that actually bothered me that I just sort of put up with, because that's what you do. Right? Eventually, I started dropping youtube channels that I watched often. People who expressed opinions I somewhat shared, but had started to radicalize in a way I was uncomfortable with. I noticed as I did these things I started to feel better generally. I had more patience and I spent less time frustrated. I started to feel good about myself. I noticed that I actually ended up stronger in my convictions and felt less anxiety about dropping channels for things like casual racism and anti trans language, things that are important to me. This is relevant, because when I started this video I had honestly forgotten what the channel was all about. My first thoughts were of other comic channels who promote ideas that don't align with my personal morals. I almost just stopped the video and unsubbed, but I was really intrigued about where you were going with this video. I am glad I stuck around. I was unprepared for exactly how much I needed to hear from someone in this fandom that I am seen as a human being. Thank you.

I seriously love your content. I have been subscribed for the past 2 years, and even though you don't upload often, like History Buffs, it is pure quality content. Thank you!

this is one of the best videos i’ve seen on RU-vid. Thank you Scott, from the bottom of my heart. i’m a person who doesn’t have a choice over what side to be on in the current “cultural wars”. i’m a brown skinned, transsexual woman and got back into comics with the X Men, due to the obvious mutant/oppressed minority parallels. i never understood why so many fanboys (and girls) complain so bitterly about politics “ruining” comics and any other media but you’ve helped me understand that a little better. when you said “trans rights are human rights” i burst into tears out of sheer gratitude since i live in britain, where the media (of all shades) is far more transphobic than in the US, so it’s truly wonderful to feel validated and supported. best of all, thank you for your self awareness. your understanding of how all of us are constantly learning from our own mistakes. you are a little jewel in a very unpleasant age. xxxx

I just wanted to say, you do have a choice which side you want to be one, it's just that one side actively hates you. Plenty of trans people have no problem selling out to people that would want to see them murdered. That's not a good thing, that's not me saying you should do it, it's just an observation.

I've been following you for several years and this video sporadically pops up in my recommendations. Up until now, I was either never in the mood for something that serious or didn't want to start an hour long video. I finally got to it tonight, and it is a masterpiece. You should be proud of it.

First time viewing your videos. Absolutely amazing! Don’t delete old videos. I can tell that you’ve grown since and acknowledge your short comings. Others need to know that growing and changing your views is possible and that your past should not define you. I look forward to checking out more of your content.

The only reason I've gotten into "capes" when I was a teenager is because of Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan). "A Muslim superhero? Cool." Then Miles Morales cuz, who doesn't love him? Now I'm in a endless rabbithole of comics journey. American comic books have always been political.

I’d like an alternate universe where captain America and spider-noir fight nazis

Don't think we've seen any non-Spider characters have alternates represented in Noir's universe. We _have_ seen Captain America of Spider-Gwen's universe, Samantha Wilson, however.

Between you using Captian America comics to talk about the politicalnes of art and Spice8Rack using Magic The Gathering to talk about the dangers of eugenics, I feel that content creators start to tackle more and more controverse topics and teach about them in a very engaging way, even if that means that months of research won't be monetized, just because it is important. I am someone who rarely likes a video, I think that my liked-playlist should be the absolute best RU-vid has to offer. But you manage to land on this playlist again and again and I am nothing but grateful for that. Thank you, Scott. Thank you
