CAPTAIN MARVEL: The One Change That Makes the Movie Way Better 

That’s not a “tweak”, that’s a complete rewrite. 😂 But, yeah, I liked it!

So... the "one change" that makes the movie way better is to completely re-write the entire film... Agreed.

“One change” is basically a completely different story.

I have a similar one change to Carol for Endgame. - Send her on the time heist with CLint and Natasha. Sending her away felt very cheap and honestly like they don't know how to use her. With Natasha and Clint she can share a bit of dialogue and we can get a good opportunity to see her grow when the Soul Stone is something she can't fix with her power. She'd have to stand there and watch them decide who dies. Be there to console Clint after Natasha dies. You bond with the team. When Thanos blows up the building have it be Carol that holds it up instead of Hulk so Ironman Thor and Cap get their moment with Thanos exactly the same. When the battle starts have many more airborn villains for Carol to fight before she needs to focus on the ship. Sending her away bothered me. Using a one liner about "other worlds" as a cheap explainer bothered me more.

this sounds like a fantastic script - only criticism is that its a very long and detail heavy script, im not sure you could fit all of this into a 2-ish hour movie without it feeling bloated

Disney: How many tweaks does this script need? Ryan: yes. no seriously, this really sounds fun. I would`ve loved this one much better. Love Space Operas! Also, nice touch with John Carter, i might be the only one loving that movie.

To call it a “tweak” is to massively undersell it but, ultimately, I like it.

This isn't a simple change for a movie, it's a show-runner's pitch for a TV series (22 episodes not 6). The film was a goofy romp, with Larson giving an 'elastic' performance (I think due to the memory loss mechanic). I've seen her other major roles and she's fine, very capable of this type of role, and much better in Endgame. Remove the tired 'lost memories' and make it 'I was fighting for the wrong side' realisation and it brings Captain Marvel's journey into focus.

Love that this rewrite includes Teddy! Given his history with Mar-Vell, the Skrulls and the Kree, tying him into Carol’s story would be the most natural way to introduce him in the MCU and their shared experience as Kree hybrids would be an interesting relationship to explore.

I kinda liked the “twist” where the Skrulls were actually refugees in the movie. But the original story where both sides are at war and do horrible things is way more interesting. It would’ve been dope to see this version in theaters.

I would ABSOLUTELY love to see this story on the big screen!

Sounds like an interesting plot but I feel like it's too much to fit in a 2 hour movie. A Captain Marvel series would be better for this.

I think more time in space would have been good. Also less time as an amnesiac. Some good points. But as you said, the best part of the movie was Fury, wouldn't want that to go away, and I loved seeing Coulson.

As a screenwriter I liked your take very much. I was disappointed after watching Captain Marvel. I love (and Cosplay) the character, and thought Brie Larson did her best, but was really disappointed with the script and direction. The character was written fairly flat and flat, neutral-emotion acting was directed throughout much of the film. Your plot progression would have made the film much more enjoyable. I think Captain Marvel is a property that can be redeemed, but Disney is going to have to choose a much better script and a targeted director like a John Favreau.

This version is so much better than the original. I like the twist that brings Hulking into the story. Ms. Marvel comes out of this story a stronger & more relatable character, IMO.

The one change that would help the show exponentially was to make the Kree team really accept her totally as one of them and be her best friends. That way choosing humans would be more of a struggle, provide stakes, and be the emotional core.

Finished watching this and while it would’ve been cool to get more insight into the Kree/Skrull conflict, it did feel like this video swung too far in the direction of the people that felt like Carol needed a grand character flaw to overcome. I honestly preferred Carol being over her conflict with her father come the start of the film. As far as she’s concerned, like with Yon-Rogg, she has nothing to prove to him. The theme of the film was one of how the people holding you back aren’t always the ones openly chastising you. Sometimes they have friendly familiar faces such as The Supreme Intelligence taking on the form of Carol’s mentor. Then there’s Yon-Rogg who presented himself as a friend and mentor to Carol when he was actually gaslighting her through faux advice and compliments, so she’ll stay in line and not realize they’ve been lying to her about things not adding up regarding her past. Her story was ultimately one of catharsis as she brings out the power that the Kree wanted to its fullest.

This makes the movie so much better than what it is, well done Ryan!

After reading about people who were potentially cast, like Emily Blunt as Black Widow, I am still not sure I like Brie Larson in this role. There’s a blandness about this character and I wonder how much of that is the writing vs the acting. This also could’ve been a direction issue.

I think what you’ve presented here is 100x better than than movie we got, but I don’t see how that much content could be crammed into a single film. I could definitely see this working better as a mini-series like Wandavision/Loki etc.

Captain Marvel was the first 3D movie my 65 year old father saw. He was blown away, I was blown away.

I think your version would be too busy and not actually have enough time to work on characters. I understand the amnesia trope is old, but I don’t think not having it would be any better. This way we at least go through the journey with Carol of discovering herself. I also loved the “surprise, Skrulls are good in the MCU” so making both sides good/bad to see all the complex stuff! is another trope (and one I’ve had enough of lately). I also love the Fury-Carol relationship and the disaffected niece look is awesome. Super hero in a NIN shirt and flannel? Sign me up!

That’s a 2 part movie with a sequel already foreshadowed… I want to see this yesterday! That all sounds like what the movie should’ve been! Haha

You meant well. I like what they did. Keep in mind ... her stories in the MCU are just starting. She'll be part of the next phase we are going into just now. I like the Skrull twist cause it sets up secret invasion perfectly imo. They won't suspect it, making the same mistake they made with hydra being too trusting. There's a rift with Carol and Monica. Carol may show up IN Ms Marvel and may introduce Inhumans which ties into the kree too. Marvel knows thier long game. That film was a set up for the future. It'll be appreciated more later.

Honestly, there should be an episode of What If...? called “What If Carol Danvers got her powers in 2016?” that follows this video’s story!

In the comics, Rogue took Carol's Kree powers, that was the point. Also, the writers wanted to power up Carol and she became Binary. Rogue was rarely written well again.

If you think about Captain Marvel and Green Lantern are practically the same movie. Their backstory are practically the same and they are cosmic heroes who spend more time on Earth than they should.

Here allow me, I think you're doing great so far but I thought I'd add my thoughts before watching the rest of this video! 1) Reveal Carol was the guinea pig for the gh formula that's used to resurrect Coulson in Agents of Shield. 2) That formula gave Carol powers not the insane level powers, but her Ms Marvel level of power. 3) Set THAT in '95 so she is established as a costumed hero that Coulson knows about. 4) The Kree kidnap her and that leads into her movie where she frees herself along with some Skrulls some of whom aren't good guys but she's left out in deep space. Now I'll get back to what you're talking about maybe the above may help, but its better than the movie they released for her origin!

This is a good script for at least two Captain Marvel movies. The first her origin and set up on Kree home world, the second her finding out the lies and deception behind it all and trying to expose and fix things which probably somehow takes her back to Earth to do so. It makes more sense that her origin happens after the first Avengers movie, when Earth decides it needs to start watching out for alien invasions, and not being there for other things because she was on Kree and far away in space. The main problem I see is that it gets rid of al the young Fury/Danvers buddy cop stuff.

It still hurts that Katee wasn't cast as Captain Marvel, then you throw in a clip of her. I still think she would have brought more fun and charm to the role, no matter the story.

I love how your script makes Carol more human with flaws and how she learns from them. Instead of a buddy cop movie we would get a James Bond type movie. I like it :)

Personally, I found Brie Larson to be too wooden in the role. If Marvel had cast a better actress who comes off much more sincere and charming, the movie would’ve been light years better than what we got. I also agree that it was a huge mistake making the original Mar-Vell a female. It completely ruins the whole concept of Carol trying to overcome her inherit obstacles that were instilled in her by her father.

Lots of this will happen in the sequel, probably.

So, instead of Captain Marvel being a strong character in her own right, you want her to be the product of a man, and in your story, the man ends up being the hero and saving her. I think the movie Captain Marvel takes the origin of Ms Marvel as Captain Marvel and does it justice. The problem I have with the story is simple, that forced look of contempt that Carol Danvers gives that feels out of place every time you see it. Whether that's Bree Larson or the direction, IDK but it doesn't make me "like" the character and I like sharp witted women that can comeback with a quick phrase or meaningful look. Not to mention, where in the 2010s would you find a text pager? Are you going to rest the fate of the world on something you bought secondhand off eBay? Please! You want something that follows the comic books more closely because of nostalgia but the fact remains of the millions that have gone to see the film probably 1/4 of them were Marvel fans. The rest were people who have never read a comic or a Captain Marvel comic. The previous generation of Marvel movies have been geared toward male comic fans. The new generation of movies is widening the scope but with stories that are written by women as well as people of diversity. As I've mentioned before, this doesn't take away from the comics. That world still exists. The MCU can and will be different from the comics because they reflect changing values in society from the original source material. That's life. Blazing Saddles would not be made today, the movie we have exists as a moment in time of what society tolerated and accepted. Many of the comics you love are the same. Trying to make those stories in the modern Era would create a stronger negative reaction than any fanboy love can generate.

How I would have done Carol: Have her start off as a Sword scientist who is friends with Abigail Brand, and during one of her first field missions, she encounters Mar-Vell, and the two become trusted friends after a few encounters with Yon-Rogg, who is the new 'Accuser' of the Kree (Since ya know, Ronan blew up.) Carol would also be established as a Steve Rogers type who is willing to fight without powers, which moves Mar-Vell, who always thought of power of tangible but now having seen power in a truly intangible form moves him and he decides that Carol is worthy of the powers he has. However, I would have it so they both have powers, because I think Mar-Vell has the same potential as Carol to be a great character.

NO! The O5 needed TEN years to be fully developed. Natasha just finished her arc. Why would Carol, in her first EVER appearance, in her ORIGIN film within 2 hours would need a change? Let a 24 year fan of Carol talk here: It was NEVER the intention of Marvel to showcase weaknesses, to give her an uber hard challenge (although you wouldn’t mess with the Supreme Intelligence, would ya?) The movie starts and ends in the PAST. An unexperienced young adult Carol. We see her finding her HUMANITY during the entire film. We see how she came from and how she came to be a hero. Her motivations and flaws to get there. They wanted to show her incredible powers and how she’d help the Avengers. The film didn’t want to explore her weaknesses. It would be impossible for her to have a huge development with her first ever appearance within 2hours also talking about your Fury, the Kree Skrull War, setting her relationships with Maria and Monica Rambeau. The O5 had 10 years to be fully developed and none of them were incredibly developed on their first appearances. That wouldn’t be cool. They need time and movies to be developed! Although we’ve seen some of her flaws, her weaknesses and drama are the things we will STILL see in the upcoming appearances in Ms Marvel, Secret Invasion and obviously in The Marvels. People just try to find something to say, they don’t even think about things.. or know her character. Really.. 🙄

Yep!!! I like this version. Holds true to cannon and has some depth. Probably doesn't help to build MCU links but tbh its her back story and allows for her to drop in later. It wouldn't take much to build a link anyway.
