The NTSB is conducting a study to see if "unsafe" driving in commercials is leading to the increase in real-life speeding. #empirecovers #cars #carnews
It’s a distracted driving issue. You can put as many safety systems in place as you want but when you have to look away from the road to adjust your ac on a tablet it’s going to cause issues
@@GenesisRasphotos no, but if the maps is constantly freezing and rerouting it means the driver is going to screw with it to try and get it working for the rest of the drive. If you ever paid attention to anything other than yourself on the road you’d have seen it first-hand. Just like why VW is ditching their capacitive buttons and going back to physical, because it forces you to take your eyes off the road to adjust any settings
also visibility in trucks/suvs is terrible. You cant really see whats infront of that big stinkin hood also the rear view is limited as often the rear window is really high and often quite small. And due to the weight the A pillars have to be quite big to not compress during a roll over. So yea big stinky car with no visibility will lead to more crashes and more lethal crashes as its huge and heavy often as they are legislated as trucks they dont even have to have crumple zones wich just sucks for anyone they drive into and themselves.
This is part post-pandemic behaviour. People are bitter about the fact that they made the worst of a situation and chose to feel ‘wronged’ rather than adapting to change, getting on with their lives, and are taking it out on the world as a result. This is also car commercials- not from the speed and risky driving they depict, but the false security from the “sAfEtY” features that do nothing but distract and engineer stupidity.
I think cars have gotten TOO safe. People don't feel like they're in danger in these things anymore, so they drive like absolute cunts. My 85 F150 lacks all forms of ADAS. Its driver's aids amount to power steering and power brakes. that's it. No ABS, TCS, ASM, auto-braking, none of that. Hell that thing ain't even got EFI. As a result, driving it, you get the distinct feeling that it's going to fuck you up six ways from sunday when you start pushing your luck. It DEMANDS you drive sensibly. Modern cars are the polar opposite...all the driver's aids they have mean they coddle you and you don't realize you're in danger until it's too late. My old truck is threatening to kill me long before I'm ever in any danger of wrecking it. And that's part of why I like it so much.
That's been a problem for some time with safer, smoother, quieter vehicles. Everything seems fine right up to the moment your Altima is doing somersaults down the median. Inadequate feedback. Most folks can't properly operate a straight shift either, oh they can mash in the clutch and usually find the next gear, but doing so with any sophistication in relation to the driving situation they're in is missing. There are two kinds of drivers, those who take it to be a serious and deadly business, and those who treat it like walking, only easier, requiring little attention or effort.
Professional driver here, just wanted to say... You are both incredibly spot-on. All of the new "safety" systems in vehicles these days lure drivers into a false sense of security, on top of more distractions, coupled with inadequate driver education. New drivers today just aren't taught the same way they were 10 years ago, much less 15-20. Thank you guys for being safe out there.
4 other things happened: We went from flip phone to smartphone in 2012, streaming more stuff while driving, and every year, the car gets more complicated to match the integration with phone, going as far as making the controls less intuitive and more distracting. 2nd street lights went from bright enough sodium types, to very dim leds. 3rd reflective street lines are not being repainted as often. 4th, wide and splendid concrete and plant islands are replacing the double yellow lined island which doubled as turning spaces. This increases congestion and obstacles if you ever veer left. I think urban planning has good intentions, but the application is a bit off.
It is weird I know but I spent 15 years on the road I know these people need to go back to school to learn how to get around not go up a ramp and people do not think of the consequences as a driver I have people try to cut me off and everything so everybody can stop blaming truck drivers and go to trucking school you might learn
Majority of people drive vehicles over 6000 lbs today, but often drive the same or even higher speeds of passenger cars. Passenger cars are not designed to be hit by such heavy vehicles, they simply cannot be as safe in an accident against something twice as heavy. Steel bumpers that don't crumple are even worse, which are commonly found on such large vehicles.
It's cell phones. I couldn't even BEGIN to tell you how often i'm driving down 295, in traffic, with people on all sides of me, all just looking at their phones. It's like people really just dont give a shit. There needs to be some automatic, non removable way to disable phones while someone is driving. My truck uses my google assistant whenever I'm connected to Android Auto, and I can basically do everything I NEED to do with just my voice. Send txts, make calls, put in a destination, even change the A/C temps and radio volume. People are too worried about their phones and not worried enough about theirs or anyone else's life.
Let’s not forget the small tv that you get in most cars now that makes you fuck around on it to do any kind of adjustment while driving like radio and climate control. People are so distracted they forget they’re driving
The economy has a lot to do with it. Ppl can't afford new brakes or tires. Stress and working overtime because of inflation. The list goes on but I doubt commercials are a big factor.
People are more ready to take a risk because the pandemic gave them empty roads. Drivers are less alert because they rely on safety tech too much. Additional comfort tech and conveniences like GPS take away a lot of attention. Car Manufacturers advertising their "emergency brake" tech unrealistically and similar tech give drivers a wrong sense of security.
I think it's because all these cars have all these stupid features with them like blind spot monitors and things like that causing people to be stupid and not pay attention. I don't need to look before I switch lanes. The car has a sensor. They will tell me if someone's there
They're going up because people just don't care about others. They want to play road warrior and just drive like absolute morons. People sit at a green light and want to fight if you honk at them. They'll swerve at you on the highway, trying play a stupid game of trying to scare you into swerving and losing control. Other people don't play...
There should be more requirements/restrictions either directly or Indirectly for car owner ship. Cars are heavy machinery that can kill people. Maybe drivers license classifications for engine size/horsepower. A lot of people shouldn’t be driving cars with lots of power
Because people haven't driven a car with drum brakes, zero airbags or seatbelts. Go drive something from the 50s or 60s and you'll learn to respect a 2-ton piece of machinery. Edit: Close to double the horsepower of cars in 20 years doesn't help either.
To imagine they wasted our tax dollar to study car commercials as the reason for increased car accidents. Do you realize how absolutely asinine that is?
Stupid ass movies like the Fart and the Frivilous and "thrilling" car chases on TV showing idiots driving like idiots and getting away being speeding idiots gets my vote. You shouldn't give the weak minded bad ideas. Also, high performance cars in general have got to go away for a variety of reasons. You know I'm right.
Nobody dare mention the elephant in the room? The largest age demographic, the baby boomers, are now reaching the age when they are too senile to drive themselves.
I think it's the entire US market that profits off of inexperienced drivers is finally reaching that exponential point. You see you can't really make money off of drivers if they're all good drivers right? If you create a large group of inexperienced drivers then you can invest money into an insurance company and profit off of that insurance company because the lack of experiences in driving will lead to more car accidents. Not only that, but America has this ideology that larger SUVs somehow translate to a safer vehicle would in reality it doesn't. There is no correlation whatsoever. In fact, there is a study that has been done that found out that majority of car accidents are caused by SUVs. And most of those drivers that drive SUVs are the same people who think that they are safer in a bigger vehicle that they could drive less safe because of all the safety features the bigger vehicle offers. So the real reason why there are more car fatalities is because of these facts that I presented to you. But nobody is going to talk about it because it doesn't favor the shareholder.
I drive a lot for my job around the city here and It became significantly worse around covid. My thoughts are that 1. police are no longer enforcing traffic laws. I haven't seen anyone pulled over in a very long time. police want to avoid interaction with the public ever since george floyd. why risk an interaction with some dumb ass and risk your life and career that it will turn into some media clusterfuck? 2. serious substance abuse has skyrocketed since covid. Most of the people you see driving like absolute shit. I want you to ask yourself "are they drunk.... high?" there is a pretty good chance that they are. 3. most cities have let their infrastructure go to waste and have no improved it in years. the city I am in purposely has not built any new roads, and just barely maintains the existing roads, because they wanted everyone to switch to public transport. nobody wants public transport though, because I don't feel like riding the rails with hood rats. so the roads are in poor condition and overcrowded. take these three together and you got ur answer.
