Dan goes through his entire collection of Carabiners from accessory biners, to life support and everything in between. If you really want to understand carabiners better and where each of them have there place, this video should hep. Dan explains what he uses and for which applications.
Dan explains why you would use different shapes for different applications. Carabiners with wire captures , when to use rubber grommets/captive eyes on carabiners, carabiners with built in pulleys and which brand he has come to personally prefer for life support and why.

With so many choices, it's almost a designer world now. It was worth addressing. I only ever used the pull down lockers. I have small hands and I loved them from my rock climbing days when triple lockers first arrived on the scene. It took me a while to find out that I could only get them from Rock Exotica now. And I agree with the ISC triple snap assessment, no good. And I also love the Nite Ize brand. A lot of innovation and options for them. Really compact and lightweight.

I like the education aspect of this channel. It's entertaining as are most channels but you actually educate people and that is important. A lot of people would be intimidated by the industry and the millions of options and you take that mystery out of it for those people. Keep it coming.

Nite ize or however you spell it makes some awesomely useful stuff! I use their gear ties for all kinds of stuff, I also use a one of their caribiners for 'sketchy bit stability' you know, when you're work positioning from a suspect anchor. I often use a cheap non life support biner as a frangible link, to ensure something else fails before I do. Obviously not for life support and use at your own risks, but those who know, know.

Personally I really like the green button petzl carabiners, find them very easy to use with gloves! I find the DMM ones a bit trickier, and would agree that the rock exotica type is easier to use. However it tends to depend on what you are connecting or disconnecting at the time, and whether you are pulling away from your bridge ring, or pulling the whole system towards you... DMM gets my vote for being made in U.K., and having such a diverse product range, eg hitch climber, pinto pulleys, vault tool holders etc etc However I have found some of my perfect-Os have nicked my rope due to sharp edges, which I wasn’t best pleased about.

I got used to the pull down function of the Rock Exotica biners, so the pull up orientation feels upside down. Petzl's ball lock is nice for people who struggle with pull & twist type biners like new climbers or ground workers. Good points on the Nite Ize for cheap lockers. The Big Dan is nice for a bull rope. The extra weight is nice for throwing.

I have Petzl Ball lock biners on my lanyard and for now am really loving these, when used to these it's always easy to open them with one hand even when in uncomfortable positions. Interesting that you mentioned winter since that is the main reason I got these, regular triple actions were often times becoming quite difficult to twist open with them often being covered by a thin layer of ice.

Petzl’s carabiners are consistently my favorite. There products in general are top notch. That being said I absolutely love the DMM versions of the former HB Wallnuts, Alloy Offsets, and Brass Offsets. They’re essentials. Rock Exotica is great for stuff like the Omni Block Pulleys and in the past the Wallhauler progress capture pulley device (before the days of the Petzl Mini and Micro Trax), the Soloist, Soloaid, and Silent Partner self belay devices.

Thorough review, thank you. One thing you didn't touch on is the choice for ziplining limbs. Since you need many of them, you want locking, and they are not strictly for life support, I wonder if there is a choice that will stand up and won't break the bank?

the carabiner I like the best which you didn't mention is the Grivel Mega K6G Twin Gate Karabiner. I think they've only been around for a few years, but the Twin Gate set up makes them super easy to put on and take off once you get used to them, and they are the perfect shape for the Hitch Climber pulley Hitch cord set up. Their size and shape also makes them perfect to attached as additional Floating or Sliding D's on the wide bridge-strap of my old Buckingham harness. So if I'm using a ZigZag I'll now attach it straight to the bridge-strap, instead of to a Floating D, which shortens length, and frees up a Floating D. It would be nice to get a new lighter harness with rope bridges but my existing one still has a lot of life left in it and I find it comfortable for climbing & pruning palms which is mostly what I do. I now have 7 or 8 of the Grivel Twin Gates in my kit and use them more than any other carabiner. You soon get used to them; I find I can operate and use them faster and easier than any other locking carabiner; so easy to use with one hand even with your eyes closed, plus I feel safer using them.

Seen this exact comment copied in different videos. Grivel is niche and will likely never be approved for a safety industry.

I use the rock exotica accessory carabiner for retrieval the shape of it makes it almost impossible for it to clip onto the specific ring and ring that I use, however I do have nightmares about it clipping to a sprout or something, that’s why I don’t use them for throwline.

I feel the same way about the green button & twist style on the Petzyl. When I bought my old saddle it came with 1 end of the lanyard attached to the loop on a sewn eye which is nice & it is not removable. On the other end it has a 10mm prusik that has a poor man's ascender which is very light. On the prusik it came with a Fusion carabiner which is my favorite. Just wondering what Rock Exotica carabiners should I be interested in replacing the DMM ovals that came with my HitchClimber Eccentric?

Whoa! I have been searching for the perfect chainsaw lanyard carabiner and you have found it. Where do you purchase those lanyards? I have never seen them. Also, what is your favorite carabiner for a rope wrench setup? I find the DMM ultra O is pretty crowded with the wrope wrench. Currently using the ISC HMS which has the same stickiness issue that the DMM carabiners have. The friction point is the metal dowel that the "gate grip" rests on when returning to the locked position. No amount of cleaning or lubrication fixes that issue. Awesome video!
@ClimbingArborist
@ClimbingArborist 3 года назад
Search google for 3M tool lanyard and click images, you will find the lanyard there. I use the ovals for rope wrench, yes it does get crowded but it isn’t too much, and I like to flip the carabiner round to open at the bridge side not the hitch side.

I'm a new climber, so I've been buying every kind to is to see what I like . I don't have access to try out different carabiner. DMM makes some great products just not their carabiners in my opinion . I like rock Exotica and Petzyl. I like RockEx if the orintation will be up or down. But the petzyl for when i need H frame or when it will be oriented horizontal toward me as in my lanyard hitch attactment.its really. Easy then to pull the the gate and twist open. Ive also got a steel carabiner for uae as a tie in connector but it has become a weight for advancing my MRS line. That and a Mechanics extending magnet Makes for a handy retrieval system

It's funny how you 'get used to' a certain product isn't it....unlike you I DO LIKE the green button Karabiners, yes they can be a little more fiddly to open (if you're wearing full gloves) but it also means they aren't going to come open accidentally either with a rub against anything....I've had no issues with mine... the 'backwards gate' karabiner is awkward, I only have the 1 cos not a fan...as regards the triple snap, I had to freeze the TV a few times to get a good look at what you were describing. The ones I'm using now are ISC triples and I think they must have redesigned that area,( I will ask) and tightened up the clearances between the 1st motion and second motion stainless steel parts because mine look impossible to get in the state yours is clearly in and if that is a particular known weakness of early triple gate snaps then swap em out for newer ones. I have 4 in all.....regular checks are important Don't wait till you're about to use it to give it a look at, you don't need any doubts about gear just before a climb, set time aside to give everything a squirt and a squint that needs it and it should then be good to go straight outta the bag....

Where you have a rappel ring at the end of your rope, throw it around the tree, take a bite of rope and feed it through the rappel ring and use a carabiner on that bite to keep it from pulling back through. If you search “JRB Cinch” on RU-vid, that’s what I’m looking to do. Thanks.

Longer cord more wraps...depends on your weight too and which type of hitch will work best for you. Try different types of hitches they work differently. I use michoacan.

Rock Exotica carabiners don’t unlock upside down, every other carabiner unlocks upside down... haha But seriously, way better the way Rock Exotica does it. I’d try to explain, but I can’t put it into simple enough words to make sense.
@Mr539forgotten
@Mr539forgotten 2 года назад
Pretty simple if you think about it. If you're opening the gate, it swings downwards, thus you are pulling it downwards, not upwards. With the rock exotica biners you maintain more friction to your fingertips because you're pulling with your range of motion (the gate opening) rather than across it (upwards). Granted, I hate rock exotica biners, but they are an objectively superior opening mechanism.
@TreeTopVantage

I disagree with your opinion on the Petzl ball lock carabiners, they're by far the easiest carabiner to open one handed in any position! I do agree though Rock Exotica makes some of the best gear out there period
