How to sync 4 carbs (or throttle bodies,) you must realize this sequence of adjusting 4 carbs that are on a single cable bellcrank that opens and closes the carbs. you must understand how to adjust the connecting shaft that operates all 4 carbs on the ventures and other motorcycles that have this type of set up first, or you will never get them in sync..

just to let people looking to find my video on carburetor synchronization. I made three separate videos. But the quality of the videos is not good enough. I’m going to have to make another attempt at making a quality video at least good enough. The problem is, it’s so dark in there under the carburetors., I just did not have enough light where it was needed while using the screwdrivers to sync the carbs and watch the gauges and hold the camera all at the same time, I needed at least three hands for that. I am working on it. Having done it,m again--I think that I could actually synchronize the carburetors without removing the seat and the fuel tank.. I will keep you informed

I 100% agree with using carb-stix vs mechanical gauges 👍 And it isn't a huge deal but I've never seen an inline four that's numbered 4-1 (the left cylinder [while sitting on the bike] is always #1). And the carb (or throttle body) that "isn't adjustable" is the one that the bell-crank (throttle cable) is on. In other words, some bikes have the bell crank in the middle (between 2-3) and others might have it on one end or the other (either #1 or #4)...

Good advice, but it doesn't apply to all carb sets. My 1977 Suzuki GS550 has 4 Mikuni VM22SS carbs, which are not CV type, but have a single shaft, operating all 4 slides through individual bell crank linkages. Each linkage has an adjuster, but they are not in pairs, so you have to set one, then adjust each of the other 3 to match it. It may be more basic, but it has the advantage that there are no expensive diaphragms to replace. I use a set of cheap dial gauges, but I calibrate them each time I use them, by connecting them all together with a 4-branch y-connector set up, then connecting that to one port. Then I can synchronise them with the calibrating screws at the normal operating pressure, before connecting them to the individual carbs. I have found that I only need to re-synch the carbs if I have had them apart. Another thing - don't forget to blank off the vacuum pipe which goes to the petcock - I did that once, and it took me half an hour of frustration with not being able to get that carb in synch before I realised it. I won't make that mistake again - probably.

my memory banks were concentrating on some Hondas carburetor set up, and. Yamaha Venture carb synchronization. You are right, I overlooked the way suzuki does it, and my old, 1973 Z1 carburetors with just slides, and no vacuum pots, and many others that I’ve had and worked on. I was more or less just thinking of the task ahead of me, the Venture. The way I synchronized carburetors on machines I would be Road racing, I just looked in the throats of the carburetors with a mirror and adjusted the carburetors to be wide opened together. I never used vacuum gauges on any of my race machines. In my day, the machines were not that overpowered like they are today, I didn’t have to finesse my way on the exits. I can just whack the throttle at the Apex and never worry about high siding unless it was raining.. But I would turn the idle way down on the four strokes i raced to have additional engine braking, but, oil consumption went up when I did that, I didn’t really worry about it in sprint races, but in two of my 4 24 hour races that I rode four strokes, the mechanics / pit crew had to keep an eye closer on the oil consumption with the idle turned down.. i’m gonna have to make the correction in the video when I synchronize the carburetors on my venture, that, not all carburetors, have just three adjustments, some of them have individual adjustments.. thanks for catching that omission on my part.. I was just concentrating on machines that have just three adjustments on the linkage rod like on the ventures.. I don’t know how I could forget all the fun I had trying to synchronize the early single cam Honda CB 750s, they had four individual cables coming from one junction connection going to each carburetor. You had to make sure you put a box fan in front of the engine, because you were gonna be there for a while. Then you would get all the carburetors close, blip, the throttle, one time, and all the gauges would be aimed in different directions again, because of the four individual cables, instead of a single bell crank, opening all the carburetors operated by just a single pull cable.. I thought I would never forget, working on those types of carburetors to try to get them in synchronization.. I made this video because I have worked with mechanics that were frustrated because they could not get their carburetors in sync, because they did not understand the basics on this three adjustment set up. That you have to see them as two separate sets of two carburetors, and only touch the center adjustment after you’ve adjusted the two pairs to each other first., like on the ventures.. I would explain like I did in this video, the sequence you have to follow, or it will drive you nuts. And every time, the mechanics jaw drop when they had the lightbulb go off in their head, oh, that’s how you do it. After which, it just takes a couple minutes, or actually less sometimes, on carburetor set ups with this type of linkage. I like this type best..

@@JodyridesI never use vacuum gauges on my 1978 Triumph T140V, either. I do the Mk 1 Amals on that the old fashioned way, with a piece of wire underneath each slide, then watch to see that they start to move at the same time. A lot simpler on an old-school twin. Although i was a car mechanic until I retired 4 years ago, the GS550 is my first 4 cylinder bike, and I was a bit apprehensive at first about being able to keep the carbs in sync, but it turned out to be very straight forward, as long as you have a basic set of vacuum gauges.

@@rickconstant6106 The way I would adjust the carburetors on my moto guzzi SP 1000, I was taught to pull one spark plug wire, while the bike was running and see what the RPMs were, then pull the other spark, plug wire, and get that cylinder to run at the same RPMs, by adjusting the throttle cable at the carburetor… I have never synchronized the carburetor on my 1958 mga that I have owned since 1968. I had the engine rebuilt to stock, and I had the body reconditioned, fenders off paint job, stock, color, then I put the car in 1975. Then I transferred it to my garage at 1987 where it still sits, waiting for me to have ambition to put it back on the road.

so am I looking forward to syncing my carburetors because I have not done it since October 2021 when I first got the bike. One thing you have to remember is, you really should check your valve adjustment and then synchronize your carburetors. Because changing any of the shims on any of the valves., Changes the balance of your carburetors, because if you think about it, you’re opening one valve Later, or sooner with a valve, Shim change, And inversely you are closing that valve later, or sooner with the valve shim change..

Can you explain that again. Is it 1 with 4 or 2 with 3 or…. Oh never mind.

The gauges are not as accurate as the old calibrated 'Mercury Sticks'. Can't get them anymore! I still have a couple sets from the early 80s.

vacuum gauges ..there’s a way to verify how accurate they are to each other on all four tubes. Just put each hose on one of the vacuum ports of the manifold, it doesn’t matter which one. just put each vacuum hose on any port, and see if you get the same readings in all four tubes on the scale.. doing that also verifies the integrity of your vacuum hoses … they are rubber after all, and everyone knows that rubber is vulnerable to ozone over time.. i use silicone grease on things like my spark, plug wires and end caps when I change the spark plugs, and on vacuum hoses and fuel lines to delay, the inevitable.. I also put a generous coating of silicone grease on my rubber intake manifolds. They live in a pretty hostile oven like environment, just like the spark plug wires. I can guess why you can’t get mercury vacuum tube gauges anymore. These committees somewhere out there that assume we are all idiots. There’s probably some EPA regulation, making it even more difficult than ever to get your hands on Mercury. Just try to go and buy a Honeywell mercury. Thermostat for your home to operate your furnace/AC.. they’re all digital now. I don’t even know if you can buy the old reliable thermostats with mercury in them anymore. I saved the mercury vials out of some of these old thermostats just for use in my vacuum gauges when needed.. I have seen guys that blipped the throttles of machines they were syncing carbs on, and they took the RPMs way up and let go of the throttle, and sucked all the mercury into the engine.. I have almost done that a couple times, but I have more mercury for when I do. If you check my video, I have a little vile like an eyedropper bottle attached to the top of my carb sticks, that’s full of spare mercury. I am pretty sure that vial of mercury came with the gauges new.. I like the mercury sticks better because they don’t flutter. You don’t need the dampers on each hose that you have to have with the analog gauges to reduce the fluttering dials..

i’ll tell you what… Just bring your bike to my house, and I will synchronize your carburetors. Just bring me a six pack, it doesn’t even have to be cold.
