Carburetor VS EFI - This 1000HP 565CI Big Block IS ROWDY!

Carb VS Electronic Fuel Injection is a popular debate and when it comes to high horsepower Big Block's, Carby's are usually king. These days aftermarket ECU technology has come a long way since Dave's Prostock racing days so when it comes to racing with his son Matt they both want to go as fast as possible.
With the Help from a ‪@haltech‬ Nexus R3 We're able to collaboratively convert this 1987 IROC-Z Camaro to EFI and we managed to make some more power along the way!
800Hp at the Hubs from a naturally aspirated V8 is a pretty impressive effort and wouldn't be possible without the help of Raceworks Fuel pumps, Injectors and A/N fittings.

In fairness to the people who are reluctant to switch to EFI it’s a pretty big effort to swap especially if you’ve been tuning carburetors for the past 40 years. Once Dave learns what he can do with the software that’s when he will be most impressed. Adding timing or fuel with the click of a button. I get that it would be very overwhelming but these older racers don’t give themselves enough credit, they are smart dudes. Everything else being equal the more effort you put into learning something the better the results.

Don't forget that so many early multi-port EFI systems used really long intakes to help with torque on the street. If I had a dollar for every time I've heard that injection makes torque but carbs make horsepower I could have retired at 25.

From my experimenting with exhausts and headers over the years I've found that having the header as the bottleneck is the way to make the most torque. They can't be overly restrictive which would cause knock issues but having them sized so that the power starts to drop off a tiny bit at (or just past) redline maximizes exhaust velocities.

70% humidity at 54F here in Florida, so 64% sounds nice. However, since 0 to 100% humidity kills around 3% total power, with the moisture we set at 101.71% for power production. Our dyno correction would lower the power numbers, right now.

Al has of course built many cool cars, but as an engineer on a race team I’ll bet my next pay check that running a traditional return cools your fuel more. Obviously higher base pressure helps with the boiling point, but the deadhead setup (especially with a regulator that far back) will experience pressure drop over that long of a distance. The pressure you read at the regulator isn’t what the engine is seeing when it has to travel that far…
@FabZtoy
@FabZtoy 6 месяцев назад
If you measure pressure at the rail, you account for that pressure drop. Now I don't know how brutal thr pressure difference can be as fuel demand raises, but it can be managed by the nexus. I'm questionning what is the biggest adder of heat in the fuel though. Is the heat of the motor through the rail a big one or the pump makes for most of it. I don't have data to support, but i guess a variable speed fuel pump is one of the best way to keep fuel cool.
@theskidfactory
@theskidfactory 6 месяцев назад
As a race car engineer surely you can undertand that the fuel pressure is being measured at the rail. You know why OE cars have deadhead fuel systems?

For the sake of saying it. In an actual back to back (not changing header sizes, inlet sizes and everything else) a carb will always beat EFI for power production, every single time, without fail. Test has been done to death by engine masters in about 3 episodes by three of smartest minds in the engine building and tuning world. Good to hear that big block sing! Awesome job on the wiring/EFI conversion.
@theskidfactory

Whats the science behind it though?
@alexmann3309
@alexmann3309 6 месяцев назад
@@theskidfactory the air temperature drop across the carbs Venturi and the atomisation of the fuel being drawn into the air will never be matched by EFI unfortunately, even the annular injection hats like a fitech or similar aren’t quite as good. You’ll make a little back by the fact you can do perfect cylinder to cylinder fuelling with MPFI but when you’re plenum air is ambient and a carbs plenum air is approaching freezing. It’s not a battle EFI will ever win. I’d recommend watching the episodes if you are interested. I’ve been tuning for a long time and Steve Brule has probably forgotten more about it than I’ve learnt.
@theskidfactory

@kispuss
@kispuss 6 месяцев назад
Al is pure magic!!
@sergeymatpoc
@sergeymatpoc 6 месяцев назад
for me it was always no-brainer that EFI makes more power. Runners are much shorter, much less loss on fuel "dissipation", and "mechanical" losses on carb are much higher (delayed mechanical response due to the number and size of moving parts). So carbs just can't be comparably precise in fuel mixture, and much harder in overall tune (fuel and weather-based). Same goes to manual valve gap adjustment vs oil-filled adjusters (same, oil-filled will always lose comparing to the right adjustment due to small variability/delays in valve timings). P.S. It's interesting how the owner fine-tuned each "barrel" of the carb for each cylinder =). How much time and fuel he spent to do all 8 =). And (obviously) how much less it takes with 8 wide-band sensors and fuel injection with stable fuel pressure =).

Definitely makes a difference in a diesel so I'd say having the fuel as cold as it can be would increase performance just as air being cold does
@boingkster
@boingkster 6 месяцев назад
Yes it does, in short. In most high level motorsports (F1, MotoGP etc) they usually specify a minimum fuelling temp due to this reason. More than anything you are just trying to avoid vapour bubbles or excessive heat buildup resulting in tuning or performance issues.
