Carlos Monzon - Was an Argentine professional boxer who held the undisputed world middleweight championship for 7 years. He successfully defended his title 14 times against 11 different fighters and is widely regarded as not only one of the best middleweights in history but also one of the greatest boxers of all time pound-for-pound. Known for his speed, punching power and relentless work rate, Monzon ended his career with a record of 87-3-9-1 with 59 knockouts, each one of his losses were early in his career and were avenged. Inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990, he was chosen by The Ring magazine in 2002 as the 11th greatest fighter of the last 80 years and voted him as the best middleweight title holder of the last 50 years in 2011. As of January 2018, Monzón holds the 2nd longest unified championship reign in middleweight history at 9 consecutive defenses.

One of the greatest Middleweights of all time! Carlos Monzon was a cerebral, calculated fighter who had a thunderous right hand and a beautiful jab - He was able to keep his opponents at bay with his high ring IQ and excellent distance control so that's what I wanted to focus on in this highlight. An incredible fighter who could hold his own in any era. Escopeta! www.patreon.com/haNZAgod

He wasn't the fastest or strongest, sure he had massive physical strength and great power punching, but it wasn't like McClellan's power or Hagler's strength. The special think about him was that he knew how to play the game. The guy had an incredible sense of distance, a solid jab, insane accuracy, fast thinker, flawless basics, ring generalship, etc, etc, etc.

There are so many weird things about Monzon. He had a bad temper and was so quick to anger. But in the ring he looked very calm and methodical. Another thing, sometimes when Monzon punched it was very obvious what is coming, what punch he's throwing, but he still connected 🙂.

You're right about the punching! One commentator said, something like, " He telegraph's his punches, but they still come". And people said, he's too slow, he doesn't look fluid, etc. Until they got into the ring with him. Then they realized what a nightmare they got themselves into!!!
@Motorfirez
@Motorfirez Год назад
True . My impression is that his punching accuracy has much to do with his kind of "pushing" punches rather than say "throwing" them . His punches sort of start slow and gain speed in the last part of the movement, as if they were propelled for the most part by the forearm . It makes sense to me that this weird punching style would allow you to sort of adjust the aim on the go .

Hi 😉, i wanted to tell you what a great job you have done with your highlights ! I am part Argentinian 🇦🇷 and have been following your work since 2015 ... Eduardo Lausse, Victor Emilio Galindez, Carlos Monzon were beautiful videos and i am happy you made another one on Monzon ! He is still a bit underrated and i wont lie the first times i watched his fights many years ago, i though he was boring but with the years, i appreciate a lot more his work, he became one of my very favourite, his jab and fundamentals were his strongest asset and this is what i find very interesting with him : did not need to be flashy, extremely athletic, explosive ... his efficiency seem so simple and when i go to the gym i say to myself how a master he was, because having good fundamentals is hard in itself but he was GREAT and made a career with Boxing 101 ... there is Poetry in his Attitude and Style, and i will repeat myself but i absolutely loves how he uses his jab ... When i watched Bivol vs Canelo it reminded me of Monzon vs Napoles, i May be wrong but Bivol is the closest i have seen to Carlos, the way he used his different jabs to keep Canelo at distance and the way he throws his right hand ... is it right to say Bivol might be a Bigger version of Carlos Monzon with overall better speed and faster footwork ? 😊
@hanzagod
@hanzagod 2 года назад
Those are good points and I definitely see the stylistic comparison between Monzon and Bivol. Monzon's footwork and general movement is so deceptive he looks quite slow yet he's able to get out of range so effectively. I'd have to say he's the greater of the 2 but Bivol has really impressed me so far.. Just wish at times he'd maybe up the gears a little bit and go for the stoppage more.
@Pablo-ig7tx
@Pablo-ig7tx 2 года назад
@@hanzagod Thank you very much for having replied sir ! 😊 i must admit i have more knowledges on Boxing history which is what interest me the most, it can be addictive to read on old time Fighters, and your video on Freddie Steele was also SO good ! I read about him many years ago and it seem he was extremely good as a MW but somehow so few people speak about him ( i see Harry Greb and Stanley Ketchel names being more recognition ... ) Sometimes i percieve " something " like watching Bivol and i have an immediate reaction thinking about Monzon because of similar pattern but i am not very good at breaking down fighters 😅 ... For example, i watched Joshua Buatsi last fight and he used a " technic " Duran used : catching an arm of the opponent and hitting with his other arm while the latter could not move, he did it often but he was the only one since Duran i saw him uses it. Anyway ! Thank you for your answer 😉

You see it well. First visually, if Bivol had the same longer hair style as Monzon, typical Amazon Indians of his parents and relatives and also the typical Bruce Lee hair style in the 70s, he would look like a twin brother of Monzon. Monzon was exactly the same height as Bivol, 6 feet. But he was almost 20 lbs lighter at middleweight. Biviol probably watched some Monzon videos with his coach. Calm style, clean, no low hits, no complaining when the opponent was unfair, he was mostly like an emotionless robot. Monzon before the Napoles fight: “Napoles has been world champion longer than me and is very good. But most of the time, of two equally good fighters, the bigger one wins. It's almost a law of nature.” So the TKO in round 6 came for Napoles for the first time by punching-power-effect in his 83 fights. Before that he was only stopped by cuts. Monzon had 100 fights, no cuts, never down, just one second on the right knee in his last Fight with Valdez. An insane condition also in the 15th round, although he was often filmed smoking cigarettes and was in nightclubs a lot, unfortunately not in such a calm, emotionless style as in his sport....
@Pablo-ig7tx
@Pablo-ig7tx 2 года назад
@@eternityjackson3564 I agree with almost everything you wrote, except Carlos Monzon was NOT an Amazon indian descent as there is no Amazon forest in Argentina, he was of the Mocovi Tribe, a Native american tribe exclusive to the country of Argentina 🇦🇷 ... he is also the only Native American Champion ever in Boxing, as he was 100% of Native American descent. As Far as Monzon being cut, he was indeed cut in his ultimate fight against Valdez, he was cut on the nose. Finally, Carlos Monzon had already been dropped by the likes of Felipe Cambeiro very early in his career and it did happen 3 times against Cambeiro in their first fight. It is said Cambeiro was a hard hitter, he was 30 whereas Monzon was at most 20 years old, not more. But Monzon would avenged everyone of his 3 losses against Cambeiro, Aguilar, Massi ). It is amazing to see how easy it was for Bivol to win 11 rounds if not 12 vs Canelo Alvarez, Bivol shares the exact same attribute as Monzon : They stick(ed) to their gameplan and are/were very efficient with their Boxing 101, nothing flashy but tremendous and i find it Amazing both can/could win with their Jab mainly, vary the rythm and Land that powerful right threw the guard.

Yo no lo sé, pero la cantidad de golpes que Monzon, pegaba por pelea, debe ser de las más altas de la historia. Fallaba muy poco. Saludos desde Argentina. Otro gran boxeador argentino olvidado fue Galindez.

Watching his fights in their entirety can be pretty boring. This video does a great job of showcasing why he was such a success though. I love old fights but Monzon's can be painful to watch. Can't deny his talent though

Fué criticado por no ser un boxeador showman , su estilo se debe a que el tenia problemas en los huesos debido a que de niño padeció desnutrición y pues tenia que pensar muy bien cuando golpear porque cualquier impacto lo podia quebrar

He stated his most difficult fight was Ancient Emile Griffith with high mileage (battle worn). I wonder how Monzon would've handled vs the stacked 1955-1965 middleweight crop.

He said that, but he also said that his fight against Griffith was so hard because of Griffith's ring experience and also he was very nervous as it was his first title defense in his homeland

his feet are very underrated. look a great pocket passer in the nfl. he knew how to feel the pocket and glide and slide his feet around to keep distance, yet spring right back on you..... he takes hagler imo prime vs prime b/c of this.

Shame we will never know! I bet a 12 or 15 round war with all you could ask for: supreme skill, speed, heart, offensive aggression and defensive brilliance, finesse, brutality! Monzon slight edge in defense, Hagler in offense. Plus the fact Hagler could switch easily between southpaw and traditional - my money is on Hagler by the slimmest of margins! I wouldn't be surprised whoever won the fight!

There is absolutely nothing eye-catching about him. Nothing. Then I noticed that he can go from defense to offense as smoothly as anybody can and can do it with any punch. I also notice he goes to the body. Hard. Add all of that (plus his reach) with the fact that he keeps that jab going, he'll feint (his faints are slow af but they keep you from timing his best and most basic weapon - the jab), I see why he was whipping ass.

Best comp when looking st Monzon is Alexis arguello only arguello didn’t have Monzons defensive acumen of avoiding punches and pivoting fighters in a position to set up his accurate punches. Msybe most accurate boxer in boxings history. Very rare did a punch miss targeted location. Duran was fighter of 70s Monzon lost by a single bite salvotore Sanchez came in third. Was a great time boxing. The fourth place person in ranking was some heavyweight cslled Ali. That’s how good the fighters were . Duran is re the best lightweight boxing history. Monzon is regarded as best middleweight not named Harry krebs. If you don’t know krebs. He beaten more hall of fame boxers in thier prime than fighter and was first fighter to fight anyone anywhere regardless of color. first chsmpion to fight black fighters, he was asked why? he loved competition. He had his own style was hard to hit, hit you often when you threw punches you hit air. He beat the great technical boxer Gene Tunney . And funny said his punches was perfect but krebs was so quick he caught nothing but sir. Krebs was only man to to defeat Tunney he went on to win heavy title from Jack Dempsey in two memorable fights. That was one of Krebs opponents he and Tunney is regarded as one of best middleweights of all time. As is dick Tiger the first black fighter to get a shot at a title. No fighter has the resume krebs has. Why he #1 middleweight followed by Monzon Robinson Tiger hagler Tunney middleweight is a deep division Roy jones jr comes in 17th that’s how deep it it is. Rjj would be higher but he goghtvat super middleweight and light heavyweight that disqualified him most of his career. Valdez should be ranked higher he was a two time undisputed champion. Show how tough rankings are liensrd and hearns are not even top fifty in this weight class. It’s a stacked weight class middleweight. Keeping everything in context why did Monzon take so much grief for fighting Jose nspolis the long time welterweight king who was regarded as fourth greatest welterweight when he fought him in history. Yet hagler was praised for fighting Leonard who was thought to have seen better days. Unlike Napoles.?that’s quite the double standard. 😳🤔

A,Leonard lo manda al hospital en medianos ,Monzón era frío , metódico muy alto, (1,81 mts) y casi 2 metros de alcance con guantes,de fuego interior salvaje,mandíbula de granito,pega en retroceso.
