@@judethaddeus9856 In other words, the role was perfect for her. Not many know this, but Carol was originally in the role of Mama. They both decided to switch the roles around and include Southern accents, much to the writers chagrin - and it worked. Priceless!
@@judethaddeus9856 Amen to that Jude well put. Vicki IS Mama and owns it now and forever. She is a natural born actress and deserves any awards she can get. I simply am transported when I watch any of these sketches.....it suddenly becomes a more innocent time and we all need it back.
I feel the same way! Poor girl. They really bring these characters to life so well. The Family sketches were always my favorite back then and still today.
I feel sorry for Ed. I do feel sorry for Eunice too but seems to me like she was worse toward him than he was toward her. No reason to cheat. I've been in Ed's shoes before. I vowed for better or worse. God got me outta that bad marriage.
Yes. I think Tim purposely did not do a lot of ad-libbing during Family sketches because they were so well written and they also had this seed of tragedy inside them. He was a sharp fella; knew what skits he could go crazy with and which ones to keep his antics low key. But of course there was one notorious ad-lib Conway did with Eunice and Mama ... that hilarious bit he did as Mickey sharing a memory about Siamese elephants. That was in the Family "Password" sketch (in their eleventh and final season), a sequence which included Dick Van Dyke as Eunice's new romance, Dan.
So true. I used to watch these when I was a child, and thought they were hilarious, and so far fetched. When I finally watched these as an adult, I unfortunately realized they weren't so far fetched after all. I still love The Family skits anyway.
Funniest time of my childhood watching Carol B!! I still say, “ here pidgy, pidgy, pidgy” when I see pigeons!😂😂😂 She formed my entire sense of humour. The funny faces she use to make stay with me to this day…..ask my 3 kids.😂
My mother was “mama.” The guilt trips are real. The loyalty of a daughter is, too. There’s no winning. It’s funny but the hurt Unice feels is realistic, too. I imagine it’s not uncommon and they portrayed it so well...with humor.
I have seen this SO OFTEN with clients and I CANNOT imagine this kind of abusive relationship. I know this is “comedy”, but still -- probably too close to reality for a lot of people.
I've been a HUGE fan of Carol, and Vickie, ever since I was a little kid, and my grandma talked me in to sitting down and watching Mama's Family! I'm pretty sure that it was the first show that I ever loved, that wasn't a cartoon! Its a shame that Eunice and Ed weren't in the show, past the first season! I love The Family skits too! I can't believe that I'd never seem this one! Thank you, kindly, for sharing it! 😁
These skits are actually the pre-cursor to Mama's Family. These actually come from the Carol Burnett Show, so you wouldn't have seen this watching Mama's Family so don't feel like you missed an episode. . It was just called "The Family" when it was a Sketch.
Me too! I first saw the syndicated Mamas family in kindergarten. The ones with vint and his kids then as I got to be like 7-8 the newer retooled syndicated ones with Naomi and bubba iola
@@shandaabsar6686 In the Eunice movie she has a job at the five-and-dime. I bet Mama never shelled out a dime to support Eunice, either. Her word isn't worth anything, as we see at the close of this sketch.
So sad how the older generation would do this to the younger.. Eunice could never get away from her mother.. that's why the Mama's other kids never came around.
Oh, poor poor Eunice.. Mama's funny in the sketch, Vicki is marvellous!, but the character is in fact terrible.. manipulating by the talking, making others feel guilty, so that, in the end, they do what she wants. Plus, she doesn't see that what she says can really hurt like at 6:59. She reminds me a bit of my grandma, I love her, but she always says or does things in a way, or tells people what to do, so that everything turns out like she wants. Eunice is a good person inside, of course she's screaming, not always really nice, but in the end she always does things for the others.. Great writing job. :) I love Carol Burnett, she's one hell of a talented actress ♡♡♡
The highlight of the episode is when Eunice reminds Thelma of the time Thelma cooked and served Eunice her own pet rabbit "Fluffy" for dinner. That enapsulates the relationship perfectly and hysterically. Thelma murdered and then stuffed Eunice's own pet down her throat. How pathetic.
Poor Eunice. When she threatened to leave Ed over his dalliance with a massage "therapist", Momma was adamant about Eunice NOT moving in with her. But, now she's forcing herself into Eunice's home!
Now that is a fact! I can't figure out why Mama sold her place🤔 The timing indicates supporting her grandkids but at the end she pulls back on the offer of rent 🤷♀️
@@jonnaking3054 i had heard that Carol Burnett based Eunice on her mom. And Mama on her grandmother. That had to be one crazy experience growing up in that home if the two of them were like they were portrayed on the Carol Burnett show. Lol
It is with a heart full of gratitude I express my deepest appreciation to you for posting this video for us to enjoy together. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for making my YEAR! This is the only episode of The Family I have never seen and I have have been looking for it for so long. THANK YOU ❤❤❤
In real life, we endure such tragedies, and the only way to ease the pain and tell these stories is to “see the humor in it”. So many time I find myself saying “well if you don’t laugh, you’ll cry” But mainly these skits let us know in one way or another that we are not alone, and there’s a real comfort in that. Many thanks to this amazing team of performers and writers🙏🏻💖
Linda Knaus---I agree with you. Having a sense of humor is what saved me. I am sure one of the writers had experienced this too. Writing this skit was probably cathartic for them.
"You ain't got no talent, no skills, no brains, no money, you drink to much you don't eat enough" how do you really feel about you daughter Thelma, DAMN!!
It's my understanding that these characters are based on Carol's mother and grandmother and their toxic relationship. A comedic reflection into generational dysfunction. Funny but terribly sad at the same time. Guilt is a parent's strongest weapon.
I was born with some sucky spinal problems! But the Lord must have seen fit to compensate me, with a quick, logical mind. So, the weaponized guilt, that the same elders that I loved and respected, and still do, almost always slid off me, like water off a duck! Unless, it was one of those rare occasions where I had something to feel a little bad about. Otherwise, it didn't work!
On the rare occasion that my grandmother said or did anything to upset me, instead of letting me just take a few minutes or so, to get over it, as I was never one to throw fits, or be disrespectful, even while upset, she had a favorite line! That was "wouldn't you feel awful if grandma died in her sleep tonight, while you were mad at her?" I always did an reverse on that! "Wouldn't you feel bad if you upset me, and I died of some unknown childhood condition in my sleep? Even if I did, my soul would understand that family just some times gets to one another!" Or something like that! To her credit, she'd always tell me that I was right. And too wise for my age, and too smart for my own good! 😆 I should call and see if she remembers those incidents! I'm still a "grandma's baby," despite being a man in my 30s! I'll never age out of it! 😁
@@getyourkicks Supposedly the actors initially tried reading the first sketch script (when Eunice's brother Philip, played by Roddy McDowall who would appear three times in the role, comes home to visit the family) without any accent, and it failed to be funny at all. Then someone suggested trying something like a Texas flavor in the dialogue, and suddenly it was hilarious. The writers weren't thrilled-- but the rest is comedy gold. Trivia: Writing partners Dick Clair and Jenna McMahon created the family. They also created "The Facts of Life" sitcom, and had written for some classic sitcoms like "The Mary Tyler Moore Show". Very talented people, God bless their souls.
Watching this from a comedic perspective: 🤣🤣🤣 *~*BRILLIANT*~*🤣🤣🤣!! Watching this from a realistic perspective: 😭☹️This is toxic and sad.☹️😭 What an amazing show.
That "crazy Miss Boylen next door" Thelma mentions about moving in with temporarily must be Iola herself who appeared in Mama's Family starting from season 3 to the finale. (Beverly Archer)
My mother in law was a Narcissistic, so is my husband. I feel this show is actually therapy for people, see themselves in these characters. All of them comic genius! 😂😂😂 Laughing is good therapy!😂😂😂
I can`t believe i`ve never seen this one. Thank you so much LAtvFan!! This was surely one of the best. I don`t think anyone likes to see our mama cry. Lol.
I sure wish they would do some kind of reuinion special while a number of the cast is still alive. Eunice, Mama, Bubba, Naomi and Iola are all still with us.
Mama suggests she could possibly move in with “crazy Mrs. Boylen next door” must’ve been talking about Iola’s mother. She also called it with saying Eunices sons would end up a juvenile delinquent. That’s where she got Bubba from when he moved on Mamas Family
I remember seeing it circa 1987 when I was about 7 years old, I remember telling ppl about this one and Ellen's Anniversary and ppl told me I dreamed them lol
I never made this connection before, but the fact that you can see all of the dirt and dust on the walls around where she used to hang her pictures reveals an important detail. Mama is quick to criticize Eunice for alleged poor house-keeping, but she drank just as much as Eunice, and she has a horrible temper just like Eunice, quick to blame other people for her problems just like Eunice... Mama's house-keeping for her own home was no better than Eunice's. Like mother like daughter.
To be fair that pretty much happens to everyone's home. When pictures have been hanging for years and YEARS, the wall looks like that when you take them down... just like the carpet under the sofa will look like new
Yes I was also lightning fast to watch as well. Pleaaaase keep them coming. This sketch from the Carol Burnett show is/was the beeeeest. Fucking hilarious!
"This neighborhood is going downhill. Every color of the rainbow is movin in here." -_- Yep. Cause no one hears y'all hollerin and fightin every day XD. If you ask me, mother harper is leading the charge on that one XD XD XD
Eunice never could get a break, never, my heart always went out to her and to those whom have actually experienced what she continuosly goes through in reality my heart and prayers are with you forever and always, but yeah she was never truly appreciated, never given her due praise
Never seen this one before! Lol WHAT BOX DO YOU WANT ME TO TAKE OUT MOTHER HARPERRRR? I would have raced Mama to that senior home as fast as I could and then drove away even faster without looking back! Damn that woman was something else! A bad something else.
I spit out my water when mama said, “this neighborhood is going to hell( every color of the rainbow is moving in here”. If that isn’t an accurate way of how old people talk, then I don’t know what is. Absolutely brilliant 😂
As hilarious as these skits are, I still feel so bad for Eunice. She tried hardest of all to be a good daughter but it was never good enough or always backfired. Her anger and ranting in these skits comes from hurt.
@@sha11235 Sad. It did seem the show still had a lot of life in it for a few more years. That was too bad. Was depressed when it went off the air. Fabulous show.
Meh. I've tried to watch it a few times, but I don't care about most of the extra characters added. They're not interesting, and neither is sitcom-sweetened Mama.
Eunice wanted so much out of life but just didn’t know how to achieve it. Thelma didn’t make it any better for her. Eunice is actually a good one because I would have stayed away from Mama a long time ago if I was her.
Well keep in mind that Eunice is also aware of the fact that Grandma Crowley (her maternal grandmother, Thelma's mother) treated her mama poorly. So she sympathizes for Thelma.
