Sally Olson and Ned Mills, stars of Carpenters Legacy, perform "Eve", "Close To You" and "Hits Medley" at the Carpenters 55th Anniversary Celebration Acoustic Concert on April 25, 2024. This performance was held at the Downey United Methodist Church in Downey, California...home of the Carpenters! The Carpenters frequented this church and it was also where Karen Carpenter's funeral was held on February 8, 1983, in addition to the wedding of Mary and Richard Carpenter on May 19, 1984. The respectful nervousness from you guys in the beginning of your set was palpable but understandable, given the church's long history and service to the city of Downey. Having personally sung in choirs and performed solos at various churches and cathedrals, it feels like you're paying homage to the spirits in the room with the hope of doing proper justice for them. It's humbling and moving yet almost surreal. The voice/piano version of "Eve" is exquisite, btw. It almost has a cantata quality that adds to the church ambience. I can envision "Someday" or "Crescent Noon" being given that same spectral unplugged setting. And Ned's glissandos on his "Goodbye To Love" solo gave me chills...

Why thank you! I wasn’t nervous in the traditional sense. And it's really funny because I don't get nervous anymore when I perform. I haven't for years. I think it was a combination of performing a segment of our show (which is typically done as a full production in a performing arts center or showroom) out of context and stripped down/unplugged, coupled with the sacredness of the space. Not to mention I had a migraine and had just taken some Excedrin Migraine which gave me the jitters. lol Having been in various chamber singer groups in high school and college, I'm not a stranger to performing in churches, but it has been years. "Eve" is such a special song to both me and Ned. We don't perform it in our regular show, so we thought this would be the perfect occasion to do it. I also love "Someday" and "Crescent Noon". I'll let Ned know that you enjoyed his glissandos on "Goodbye To Love". Thank you so much for your kind words! 😊

Karen wanted to rerecord the great song, "Eve" from the "Offering/Ticket To Ride" album because her voice had matured and she felt she could do an even better job than she did on that song in 1969, but sadly she never got around to rerecording that song.

Sounds great....something about the sound in Churches. Saw some videos on J.S. Bach and other composers with the choirs singing in some of the European cathedrals. Even Greg Lake with Ian Anderson. All sound so ethereal. Carpenters songs would sound so marvellous in one of those places. Have you ever travelled to Europe and done performances?

I have not performed in Europe since I was in college doing a Chamber Singers concert tour in 2000. Yes, I agree that Carpenters songs would sound amazing in the cathedral setting.

@@SallyOlsonCarpentersLegacy Nice that you got to go to Europe. I think I saw a documentary on a choir going to Europe and the home of MOzart's concertos to sing some of the choral pieces. What type of music and songs did you sing in the Chamber Singers concerts if you don't mind me asking?

@@jamesbond4633 That was my first-ever trip to Europe and I've spent time there since, but not since 2007 (Florence, Italy.) I am long overdue! Our Middlebury College Chamber Singers repertoire consisted of music from composers like Healey Willan, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Willaim Byrd, Mozart, Anton Bruckner, Maurice Duruflé, Benjamin Britten and Peter Lutkin, to name a few.

@@SallyOlsonCarpentersLegacy I will have to do some research on those composers other than Mozart!!! Florence Italy sounds very exotic!!! I got to go to Italy for 1 day in Trieste so didn't get to see much but I loved the atmosphere and the language!!! So much history in Europe to explore. America has some nice places too. Boston was an interesting place with the Revolutionary history and got to see a little bit of New York City before covid. Broadway!!!! On The Town and On The Twentieth Century were great to see. Have you done any musical theatre?

@@jamesbond4633 I was in Florence studying painting at the Florence Academy of Art. Florence is truly a magical place and Italy in general. Would love to go back. I studied abroad in Paris as a college student and love it there as well. I'm originally from Vermont, so I've spent a lot of time in Boston and NYC over the years. Absolutely love Broadway!!! I actually studied at Circle in the Square Theatre School (musical theatre program), so yes I have done some musical theatre and our show "Carpenters Legacy" is basically a hybrid between a concert and musical theatre.

Thank you! This acoustic concert setting in a church is not our norm. It was a special event at the Carpenters 55th Anniversary Celebration. Typically we perform in show rooms, performing arts centers or our Las Vegas residency in the V Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.
