Carving your own lures is one of the most rewarding experiences in fishing, and making a topwater lure like this bluegill wakebait is basically as fun as it gets. Follow along with Part 1 of this bait build as I walk you step-by-step through making a custom wakebait for bass fishing.
In this video we cover wood carving and detailing, fin placement and styles, and weight and action of the lure as we prepare for Part 2, which covers mold making, resin-casting, painting and fishing.
A wake bait is just one style of lure you can make, and you can adapt these techniques to all kinds of lures in future builds.
I mention a few great bait build channels in this video and highly recommend checking out ‪@marlingbaits‬ and ‪@SolarfallBaits‬ RU-vid channels as well. Those two bait builders are true masters and you can learn an incredible amount about the craft, plus be super entertained in the process. Totally recommend subscribing to their channels!

I mention FlexCut carving tools in this video, and though I am not sponsored by them, I highly recommend investing in a set of carving tools like them as they make carving so much easier!

Love the carving videos! And the lure. You should head over to tackle underground forum and enter that lure in their contest if you haven't!

@@RiverbendWoodworks yea it’s a great community of lure builders. Just make sure you read the rules for the competition. That seems to be hard for most people. Only enter one picture.

Subscribed! Is there a way you can make a video showing how you make those lure weights?
@RiverbendWoodworks
@RiverbendWoodworks 3 года назад
Thanks for subscribing! The weight system for the final lures is actual just a simple lead head from a 3/4oz jig. I just clipped off the hook and hook eye and had a perfect lead ball. If you need to remove a little you can either use a chisel to literally carve a sliver of lead off, or you can use a small drill bit to drill out some material. The weights shown in Part 1 are actually steel cut into 1/2" or so lengths, and were just for the test. Lead is heavier by volume than steel, so I opted for lead in the final lures because it made for a smaller hole size. Hope this helps and that you can carve up some as well!
