The goal of The Wilderness Living Challenge Season 3 survival series is to GAIN or MAINTAIN body mass living only on 100% WILD FOODS! Unlike Naked and Afraid, ALONE, or Survivorman, there is no limit to the tools we are allowed to use. Living off just WILD foods is harder than you think!
In this episode I set a line for alligator gar which is an ancient toothy fish that grow to over 12 feet long! I catch it on circle hooks and liver for bait weighted to the bottom. After I wrestle the gar to shore, the work begins as I clean the alligator gar and then cook it over an open fire using a few sticks primitive cooking style.
We hunt FERAL hog too!
We fish for catfish, alligator gar, long nose gar and drum, crawfish, crawdads, or yabbies, ghost shrimp, bluegill, rio grande perch, armored catfish, flathead catfish, blue catfish, alligator, freshwater clams, leopard Frog.
All wild foods are on the menu!
We seek out wild edibles including prickly pear cactus pads or nopal, cactus fruit or tuna, wild onions, mulberries, wild grape, Texas persimmons, pecan and anacua, mulberry, tasajillo, turks cap, yucca pods, cats briar, oion, chili pequin, duck weed, ground cherries, desert hackberry.

In México, we have two types of mulberries. White, and purple. My father in law has 2 white mora trees (mora simply means "berry" but in México mora refers specifically to Mulberry) on his in-town property. The big one produces about 1,000 pounds of moras yearly, the small one about 100 pounds. Eat them, bake cakes with them, make wine with them. 🍷 And, make ice cream with them. In our Mulberry trees, we have a vine growing, called a Cheyote. Sometimes spelled Chayote. It has a fruit the size of a grapefruit. Which, is green, think skinned, a little sticky on the inside as with most desert plants. Good stuff. Can be eaten raw, sliced and soaked in grape juice and served as a candied breakfast fruit or snack. It has a single, edible seed inside. I like it grilled, but not over mesquite! I have NOT seen a single Cheyote plant in Texas. Anywhere. Ever. Has anybody ever seen one? HEB is selling Cheyote fruit now, but I've never seen a live plant.
