Thanks for doing this, the data is awesome. On a side note, I'm off to buy my Ben Stutz jersey.

I instinctually knew this, but had no data substantiating my instinct. Thanks for your effort. Bonus, these types of guys are often available in the rule 5 draft.

This is very interesting! I’ve been an OOTP Baseball gamer since the very beginning. For many years and many games I would start an inaugural season with my team having the last draft position. I would always use my first pick for the best starting pitcher possible. Recently I’ve changed to drafting the best catcher available. Huge difference. My entire pitching staff is so much better, making for a more competitive team right from the beginning. Thanks for all the OOTP Baseball tips and instructions you have put out on RU-vid. Much appreciated…..

Catcher ability is super undervalued. I'd argue he's worth even more.

The absolute GOAT of OOTP

Adding my anecdote here: So I'm playing my first OOTP 22 game as the 2021 Mariners, who the game predicted to have a .500 win rate (which I managed to reduce significantly :P). I chose to watch a game vs Cleveland (who were predicted to be under .500 yet had the best record of the year at the time). Strangely, most of my non-pitching lineup was considered better than theirs by the game (and I was the one getting hit hardest with injuries). The biggest difference? Their two-star catcher's *only* above average trait was a Catcher Ability in the 90s.

Should be the “Big Data Baseball” that books all about pitch framing and the catcher.

Good stuff. Enjoyed that. I'm curious if you've done any sims on this type of thing with the short-series tournaments? Does it pay off in a 7-game series the way it would in a Perfect Team dynasty?
@sgtmushroom
@sgtmushroom 3 года назад
I can run tests on the effects for higher leverage situations, but statistically, the numbers would be the same over an infinite sample size of 7-game series as it is in normal game modes.

Question: What is the difference between catcher ability and position rating for a catcher? For example, my backup has a cannon for an arm (100) and his position rating at catcher is 76. However, his catcher ability is 36. I figured he was a solid backup to shut down other teams' running games, but now this is making me think that I've been doing it wrong. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
@sgtmushroom
@sgtmushroom 3 года назад
I don't like position rating as a tool for anything aside measuring how much training a player has. For catcher, arm and ability play equally into position rating, even though ability has much more impact on run prevention at the position. I actually have a tool called weighted position rating that gives you a more accurate idea how a player will prevent runs relative to average at their position (weighting catcher ability and arm accurately). I watched this a bit ago, but I can’t remember what the difference is on the 20-80 scale. Like, how much more offensive value do you need from a 65 grade ability to play them over an 80 grade?
@tycholoor1065
@tycholoor1065 3 года назад
I'd say it's about 15-20 runs over the course of a season between an 80 and 65 catcher ability.

i had buster posey and got to the world series final, then next season i opted out of his last year because he was 24 million and aging in favour of playing my prospect ryan jeffers. my pitchers babips went crazy high, im talking .150 higher for some pitchers, my defense and zone rating were some of the worst in the league... so the season after the jeffers season i got JT realmuto... suddenly my defense is solid and all my pitchers babips went down and my infielders zone rating stats all went up... and all because i went from an average catcher to an elite catcher... anecdotal of course but seems u have data that shows the importance of a catcher

Does this strat hold true for OOTP 22? or did the meta change for catchers?

How many pitchers and hitters do you keep in your minor league system ? Also do you also do the Player Strategies for all your players in the minors ?
@sgtmushroom
@sgtmushroom 2 года назад
I don't bother with minor league player strategies because it's not an effective use of my time. I generally just pick up hitters and pitchers as I need them, and if I notice a severe deficiency at one of my levels, I sign free agents to fill the hole.

Why are the numbers exactly opposite? And why would a team score more runs (precisely more) by having a better catcher ability? The numbers being exactly opposite (wins, losses, runs scored, runs allowed) leads me to believe there’s obviously something in catchers ability that has offensive values. Hopefully u can prove me wrong or that would be worrisome
@sgtmushroom
@sgtmushroom 2 года назад
I think you slightly misunderstand, teams with higher catcher ability score more runs because they are reducing their opponent's run totals. I found no correlation with offensive values.

@@sgtmushroom Also after reading some of your spreadsheets, can you tell me if this is a logical conclusion: you really dont want your power hitters or anyone other than strictly on base guys to have too high of an Avoid K rating?
