One of the greatest misconceptions you can have as an OOTP player is that the overall rating tells you all you need to know about a player. It doesn't. So what should you use and what should you avoid when looking through players? I break down my strategies in this video.

Phillies will be on stream today, actually tougher to figure out and balance than expected, but we've got an interesting team put together.

Do you only look at the ratings or use statistics to evaluate players?

Wanted a fresh viewpoint to see if I was missing something in my evaluations. I am a long time OOTP player and pretty much take the Detroit/Pittsburgh/Baltimore franchise mode for the 5 year plan challenge. You have a nice system here and very similar to mine, BUT, how in the heck are you getting 100% (blue) scouting accuracy for all MLB players? Is this a change in your league settings (which is a cheat in my opinion - I use the normal setting to guarantee some misses by the scouting staff) or are you using your team scout to constantly scout other teams AND drafts?? I can get about 25% of MLB scouted to the very high level by using my scout, otherwise they range from Low for marginal "cup of coffee" players to Average MLB team players, to High/Very High (green/blue) for targeted players I want. Nice to see your vlogs and just in time for OOTP22 coming out to tweak the system/numbers again :)

100% scouting accuracy is a setting you can enable. I don't use it for actual play (although I will note it's the default accuracy for historical leagues, as those are based on real player statistics), this is simply a league that I created as a showcase, for videos such as this.

@@sgtmushroom - Thank you for the response, I am SORRY for my choice of words, I went back and reread my post and when I saw how it read about the change was being a cheat... it WAS my "Duh!" moment. I DID NOT mean to say you were cheating in playing the game, perhaps its better saying that OOTP players need to know that scouting using "regular" scouting will only see 10% of the teams players in green (high) or blue (Very High) UNLESS you spend time each turn or week scouting each level (5 players per level is my usual) and I happened to have one of my leagues just coming up to scouting the draft. SO I scouted 338 potential draftees (2.5 star and above, 95+ speed/steal, 75+stuff/control) and it took all 5 weeks to get reports on those players done. Of those players only 27 achieved green or blue scouting (High/Very High) and I ran out of time to do second rounds on the draftees. Hopefully that explains better what I was trying to say about scouting. And I meant no disrespect to you or your vlog! it is excellent work Sgt.!!

Thanks for this video. How would you recommend seeing the number of each player who has X rating as "historical averages"?
@sgtmushroom

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "historical averages".
@1who4me
@1who4me Год назад
@@sgtmushroom you keep saying historical average in your video. Probably a good idea to define what that is and why you keep using it
@sgtmushroom
@sgtmushroom Год назад
@@1who4me There isn't really a set definition for how I used the term, and frankly, it's irrelevant to understanding what I'm saying. Technically, it could be defined by the OOTP standard of 2014 MLB stats, but again, I wouldn't put that on there.

I don't know regarding the freddie freeman vs soto thing... I mean I certainly value veteran, hardware and leadership. I mean sure soto will have those things in spades eventually but if you're starting from scratch or want to win now (with gobs of talent around freeman... say you have Alex verdugo and reece witherspoon I mean hopkins should you trade for soto or freeman? I might go freeman if you lack leadership and have the money) you really have a conundrum to work out xD
@sgtmushroom
@sgtmushroom 3 года назад
That personality is only ever so slightly better... it's not worth the extreme amounts of talent, drop in price, and controllability of Soto.

Wait, what? what is this BABIP/hr formula you speak of?
@sgtmushroom
@sgtmushroom 3 года назад
Contact is a combination of avoid K's, home run power, and BABIP. BABIP is, of course, the only thing in that rating that matters. You can calculate BABIP from contact, avoid K's, and home run power, although I do not currently have a formula for the purpose.

Are you joking? Gap Power = slugging percentage. Kind of important if you are playing money ball. More gap power equals more extra base hits.
@sgtmushroom
@sgtmushroom Год назад
Actually, you just made my point for me. Gap power = slugging percentage. Technically, the weaker part of slugging percentage, since home runs are more valuable. Slugging percentage is NOT moneyball (technically, defense and movement is in OOTP). If you're familiar with the hitting statistic weighted on base average, you'll know that extra base hits aren't really that much more valuable than singles. Gap power largely draws away from singles, and since a 2B is only like 35% more valuable than a single, gap power is much less valuable than BABIP. Significantly less.
