Great bible. Just beautiful. It amazes me to see the comments against Bishop Barron. The fact that people think he's bad for the Church is just crazy to me and makes no logical sense. But then again, there is a tendency in Catholic social media now to hate everything post-Vatican II. I'm trying to say this as charitably as possible, but its usually a lost cause trying to speak to these people. I know there'll probably be some snarky replies to this, but brothers and sisters, let's support those who love and defend the Church. Bishop Barron and Word on Fire are these people.

Why do people find Bishop Barron divisive? I know he took some heat for “dare we hope all men are saved” and sort of a liberal theology on salvation, but I think he stays well within the bounds of the catechism and I wasn’t aware his critique went much further than that. I love his homilies every single week, I think he hits the nail on the head and the fact that he makes both extreme modernists and extreme traditionalists unhappy is probably more of a good sign than bad. But maybe there’s some controversies I hadn’t heard of. As for this Bible, I heard about it and remembered you had a review, so I watched but I don’t think I will end up getting it, I only have so much time in a day to sit at a desk and read a Bible and if I’m gonna splurge on a big study Bible like this, I’d prefer if it at least had more than just the gospels. But I am a fan of the selections that it seems he’s chosen for commentaries.

Barron is just so popular he will get heat no matter what. Even in this comment section. I think the concept of this book is nice in concept but in application I am mixed

I bought Vol 3 WOF Bible which is the Pentateuch. I’m reading it cover to cover like a novel which bishop Barron said you can do. It’s very readable due to the eye pleasing page layout, beautiful reflections, commentary and art. This Bible is amazing. I plan to buy The Gospels when I finish this volume. Bishop Barron seems to say Vol 3 is his favorite though.

@@ConvincedCatholicism I was surprised he said that about Vol 3 but it was excellent. You really need the OT background - especially the Pentateuch to understand The Gospels. I finished reading both Vol 3 and Vol 1 and I am in the process of reading Vol 2. I pre-ordered Vol IV. 😂

sometimes I wonder if people just regurgitate what they hear. It's always the same thing...I read the DR or the RSV. NABRE sucks, NRSV sucks, etc, etc. Especially when I hear that the NABRE is a terrible translation, but no one can give me examples, just complaining about the notes. What about the translation?
@ConvincedCatholicism
@ConvincedCatholicism Год назад
I don’t know if NABRE sucks per say. It is definitely an every man’s translation. I will definitely say that the NABRE is simplified and doesn’t feel as elevated as the DR or RSVCE.

For some reason I thought there would be a lot of pictures of Catholic art throughout the Bible. I wonder if the other parts Word On Fire Bibles have more, less, or about the same? I'm a visual person so i was really hoping for more... Like one on each page that connects to the chapter and verses you're reading.

How much of this volume is exclusively Catholic? How useful would it be for Orthodox Christian?
@ConvincedCatholicism
@ConvincedCatholicism 3 месяца назад
Tough to put a number on that! There is a a lot of Church Fathers but also a lot from Bishop Barron and other Catholic writers. Would an Orthodox Christian agree with much of what is said? Yes. Is it authoritative? Nope.

I must say I found many of your comments condemning of the W on F bible. I think you are not even understanding why this series of 7 volumes is being published. I have the 2 volume entire new testament and the pentateuch is on order. This endeavor is for people who do not know Jesus and for those who want to better understand the Church from Jesus to today. You really dropped the ball on this one. Bibles are to be read,written in and verses memorized. These are not your big FAMILY bibles or your little,pre-vatican prayer books. St. Jerome stated that ignorance of scripture is ignorance of Christ. Should you do episodes on future volumes I hope you will do better.

Thomas, thanks for your feedback. I am very supportive of the Word on Fire series I just wish the purpose was more explicitly written out. Readers of scripture may feel lost without a plan. Even with the great supplements in this edition. I never except people to agree with me but your comment comes off as if I don’t know what he bible is or what it is for. I am glad that you enjoy the Word on Fire series and I hope you enjoy the edition on the way!

@@ConvincedCatholicism there are many different types of bibles. Some are scripture only. Others also have commentary on each book. Still others have all that and extensive cross references. Others will also have extensive footnotes and some also have notes from the C.C.C. The Word on Fire bible adds another dimension to the different bible groups. We are so blessed to have these resources plus holy mother church to help guilde us into a closer relationship with The Divine. These Word on Fire bibles help to broaden our knowledge of our faith and our horizons. Peace

I’ve been thinking about this book for the past couple days. And after thinking about it, it could be a lot worse. I mean Bishop Barron presents a traditional and conservative interpretation of the holy gospels that sticks within the realm of orthodox Christianity. Plus he does draw on quotations from the Fathes to accentuate his points. It’s a far cry from the New American Bible Oxford Study Edition that is patently awful in every way. From assertions that the books weren’t written by the persons who are said to have written them to even accusing Jesus of just being incorrect or wrong.

Personally I hate everything about this. I hate the way the pages feel like a textbook, the way the text is laid out like a magazine, and the translation is not my favorite either. God bless whoever reads it, but geeze. Catholics need a better sense of satisfying bible aesthetics.

@@ConvincedCatholicism I am Catholic! My personal bible is a Baronius Douay that I had rebound. My general opinion on Catholic bibles is that they either have a translation I don't like (like the NAB, NABRE, or NRSV), or the presentation is somehow not satisfying and doesn't feel like a bible should (Didache Bible, Word on Fire Bible, Great Adventure Bible). There is a Cambridge University Press ESV-CE that seems really nice. It's called the Cornerstone Edition. Hopefully the new NABRE edition will be good too, fingers crossed for that. I'm partial towards the DR b/c I like the thee/thou/thine language, but that's just personal taste. I know the Ordinariate's Walsingham Publishing has a KJV-CE (mindblowing concept, I know lol), but it's a small project and they're cheaply bound for now. Hopefully it can be in imitation leather one day soon.

Thanks for the insight. My personal Bible is the Baronius as well! It seems we are of the same mindset on this. I would love to check out the Cambridge ESV-CE and the Great Adventure.

The NRSV's extreme use of inclusive language makes it a rather horrible translation in my opinion. It's a bit sad. The NRSV could have been a great translation. Its critical apparatus was superior to the RSV. For example, it used the Dead Sea Scrolls in the OT. But it was completely ruined by inclusive language. The beautiful poetry of the KJV, which to a large extent survived in the RSV, was obliterated. Don't waste your money on this. Rather buy a 1941 Confraternity NT. It's thoroughly Catholic. It uses thees and thous, not for poetical purposes like in the RSV when they are used to refer to Deity, but for semantic purposes. In many passages of the NT, the distinction between you singular and you plural becomes highly significant. It is much cheaper. It does not use inclusive language at all (which to me is a plus).

@@ConvincedCatholicism The ESV is a good literal translation of the Scriptures. I have two gripes with it though. The first is that it is too prosaic. In order for it to appeal to the common reader, the translators of the ESV got rid of what they consider to be archaic words, but which I think actually contribute to the beauty and poetry of a translation. Second, I don't like its translation of 1 Timothy 3:15 where instead of using the traditional rendering '' the Church of the living God, _the_ pillar and foundation of the truth'', they use ''The Church of the living God, _a_ pillar and foundation of the truth''.

These bibles are more for spiritual reading than for study and I think they are specifically for people who have never read scripture at all. The book is supposed to be beautiful, inviting and easy to read. I think it does a better job at that than most Catholic bibles.
