Couldnt agree more. The Shinkos have done nothing but impress me in every way. Im about to replace my 705 rear which has about 10,000 on it and is squared off but thats mainly due to allot of highway riding Ive done recently. I’ll definitely be putting another one on.

Yep- a good product and cheaper than most. Thinking about the 150 rear now though as per "Stuff's" comment...

I've been more than happy running 705s on my Wee Strom. 9900 miles on the rear when I changed it and it could have gone a ways yet. Still running the same one on the front at over 16000 miles. Not much to say on riding in the rain since its a rare event here.

Good mileage there for sure. I thought anywhere that had distances in miles had rain though? ;-)

Thumbs up for the GOOD choice to record and upload at 60fps...I am so sick of motovloggers and advertisers showcasing riding a motorcycle with shitty 24, 25 and 30fps. If I wanted to watch a slide show, I'd look through an old digital photo album. Cheers, sincerely. Thanks for the vid.

Thanks man, know what you mean, I'm the same with poor sound (and I'm never completely happy with mine). The lowest of the low is the old Go-Pro on the helmet with no external mic = awful wind noise!

Glad you're loving the Shinko's as much as I do. I can remember raving about them to you at sync the planet last year. I've had similar mileage out of an 804/805 combo. I've got a half worn 19" front in my garage you're welcome to it you want to try it out before committing to a new one.

Yes indeed I do mate, you were largely responsible for me choosing them. That's very kind, thank you, but you forget I don't have the 19's like Bro did... still the humble 17 OEMS :)

I've never tried the 705's but I really like the 804/805, much better off-road than the 50/50 I had previously and still quite good on-road.

...my experience with the 705s is very similar to yours though mine were mounted on R1200GS where the extra weight seemed to help them be a bit more planted on wet pavement - since then I've installed Metzeler Karoo Streets and found those massively stickier and more planted on wet pavement. way better! Still, the Shinkos are without doubt the best value to had!

Great review and great video (as always). I ran them on my previous bike (CRF250L that was setup for and used for ADV style riding,not real/technical trails) and liked them for all the reasons that you mentioned. I traded that in on my CB500X before I was able to see how long they'd last though. As my stock Pirelli tires are getting close to where I'll replace them, 705's will definitely be what's going back on it (I use mine for daily commuting, and lite offroading/ADV riding like yours is used for, so they'll be great for my needs), a timely review for me since it will be within the next 500 or so miles ridden when I replace them :)

I had a bad moment on Shinko 705s on the weekend where they skated across a damp road onto the wrong side (alternative was to drop the bike). I was lucky there was nothing coming the other way. So I have realised that they're not good for wet tar. Extra caution is required.
@CaptainCrankyMotovlogger

I've had similar - but not on clean wet roads. We gat a lot of patches of diesel and mud though. I think I just ride in the wet fairly conservatively so find them fine.

Yeah we get enough rain here to keep it green, the drought that has been happening inland for several years only got past the mountains and hit us for the last 6 months. Just had a few weeks of rain so it's pretty much broke here now, generall there's enough rainforest in the region to generate rain and keep it green :) I've had a few close calls with birds, roos and wallabies and even a few snakes - those birds though - they just suddenly fly across you!! Thank you mate.

The low cost just makes these a great tire. Be careful with the 805 in sand until you get used to it. It will push a little. They won't give you the mileage of the 705's but they work well everywhere. Not sure about rain though. I look forward to your thoughts on them.

The are brilliant on asphalt twisties, long lasting, very smooth tip-in and even pretty good on wet asphalt. This is the main reason I got them, I wanted an off-road tyre that wasn't going to make the bike boring or dangerous on the twisties and wouldn't wear out quick with all the highway miles I do.

Hi buddy! Just sitting at 84000Km (52194 miles), I found my PR4 rears lasted 18000 (11184 miles) and the fronts lasted 27000Km (16777 miles). This was conservative, legally more left on them but I like to have them in good condition. The squared off rear could have you undone on a slippery bend so best to err on the cautious side :) RSM8.

CaptainCranky Should have seen the squareness of my Scorpions lol. Separately, have you had any issues with persistent brake binding and with front and rear bearings? I've not had one thing go wrong with the bike, unless I broke it! Some tiny bits of rust on the forks, but fighting it off with the wet aluminium foil trick (it converts iron oxide to aluminium oxide then just wipes off - really cool!).

I have this tire on my DRZ 400S that I have made into a more capable light weight ADV tourer. This tire has greatly improved my road confidence and still tackles fire roads with predictable control, I do air them down a bit as needed and run heavy duty Michelin tubes. I'm sure what would be better than these, I would like a bit more grip in corners with better wet traction and still be as capable off road. Any other suggestions to try next for me? Cost isn't a big issue if I can find a even better performer. I am at 1200miles only right now on these 705's but I wont run them past 5 k miles.

@CaptainCrankyMotovlogger 4 года назад
Hi mate, yes I still think they are very good, although I now run the thinner rear siz and like it even more. I occasionally wish I had something more off-road capable (mud, sand etc.) but I know I would lose some performance on road and also a fair bit of longevity. BTW - if you aren't doing ANY off road at all - the Michelin Pilot Road 4s or 5s are without a doubt the best tyres, in fact I even did my first year or so off road on them!). The Shinkos are a compromise in so much as, with only a 17' front, there's not much available. If I had a 19" front I would go with Mitas E07. I did see this awesome review of most adventure tyres where the Shinkos came out very well: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gjtgLz1LjnE.html

There are no problems at all with the chain or anything else in terms of fitment and rubbing on anything etc. It would be down to personal preference. Sure - I used to drop a lot (to 24/26) but the risk of rim damage is high. Road pressures are 32/34, I tend to run the tyres 28/30 and let this do for on or off road. The thick walls on the Shinko are fine with that.

Are you running 170 or 150 on the rear. I wore through a 170 on my NC but have now gone to a 150 as I can use all of the tyre. For me, The 170 on the 160 rim squashes the tyre in and results in less contact patch in the middle and unusable chicken strips on the sides.
@CaptainCrankyMotovlogger
@CaptainCrankyMotovlogger 5 лет назад
The 170 - it feels great on road but now you've got me thinking about it...
@AfricaTwin-Stuff
@AfricaTwin-Stuff 5 лет назад
I didn’t have a problem with the feel of the 170 but I think I got less kms out of it because of the smaller centre contact patch. With the 150 I’m getting wear more evenly across the whole tyre. I’m actually running a Metzler Tourance (the original model not the exp or next) of 150 on the rear now (and they are about the same price), and the std size 705 on the front. I have used the Tourance for many years on my GS and liked its grip and wear. It isn’t as as off road as the 705 but still not bad. I will be sticking with this combination in the future as I won’t be doing anything any more extreme than gravel roads on the NC in future.
@ADVRydrBloke
@ADVRydrBloke 5 лет назад
Honda NC750X Stuff interesting. I would have thought the wider tire would give you a larger grip area. Im running the 170 rear and I have about 7mm chicken strip on the edge. I do recall on the old stock Dunlop’s there was no chicken strip and the tyre did pretty much ware evenly. Its a shame they dont make a 160 for the rear.
@nonplussed0000
@nonplussed0000 5 лет назад
I was thinking about this too - I'm running the 150. It's in need of replacement & I do wonder what the differences are between the 150 & 170 in practice. Definitely concur with the Captain's good review - the Shinkos have been great with a wide range of surfaces & conditions for me.
@AfricaTwin-Stuff
@AfricaTwin-Stuff 5 лет назад
ADV-Rydr-Bloke - get a piece of paper and bend it. The more you squeeze it together to sharper the curve. This is what happens when you squeeze a 170 on a 160 rim. It increases the curve and therefore reduces to centre contact patch.
