I got to see Fred Penners Place - CBC Manitoba preserved the set for years in a studio in their building. It was a surprisingly small set and studio. This was about 20 years ago so I assume CBC has dismantled that set by now.
I saw Fred Penner in person once, when I was very young. We were on vacation travelling and happened to see him. I was so shy but got the courage to say hello. He got down on one knee and greeted me. He then looked down and noticed my shoe was untied. Unprompted, he quickly tied my shoe for me. Amazing guy and a legend. ❤
We travelled to Windsor to see him. First live performance for me, I think. I remember he threw a frisbee across the stage. At home, we would watch him in my grandma's living room with our snacks.
Those of us south of the Canadian border got to watch Fred Penner's Place on Nick Jr. when that was a new thing for Nickelodeon and I remember really enjoying it. Actually, we had quite a lot of shows on Nickelodeon back then that were filmed up north and they were all awesome. Thanks, Canada, for the intelligent children's programming I got to grow up watching.
Alan Rizkallah well that is very nice of you ..!!! And please don’t forget what started Nickelodeon in the USA ...!!!!! It was you can’t do this on television which was filmed in my home town of Ottawa Ontario. I was born in 1980 and sometimes it makes me feel very old when I think back to far lol
I just started remembering this show from my childhood, but couldn't remember the name, & it was BUGGING me. I literally Googled everything that I remember happening in the intro when I watched it as a child 30 years ago...AND HERE IT IS! OH MY GOD! I loved this show as a kid and thought this guy had the COOLEST secret hideout!!! Brings back memories when shows were wholesome and educational. I miss it.
Dude!! I remember being obsessed with this show as a kid in the late 80s!! Random this memory just popped up in my head. Oooh to be 5 years old in the good ole 80s again. Better times 😁🤙
One of my favorite shows as a kid. The order was this show, the elephant show, Mya My other Bee, The little bits, David The Gnome. This one was my most favorite of the block. I'll never forget the first time I heard the Cat came Back
Okay I'm in tears because I instantly feel 6 again.. still my dream to meet him one day. Also the Toronto Island Ferry at the beginning.. so many memories. Thanks Retro Ontario!! ❤
"Have you ever been to a block party? That's where everyone gives you 5 bucks for a red cup, that you can fill with - well, nevermind. Let's sing a song!"
Yeah, no one remembers this show when I ask, "guy crawls out of a log?" Thank science for youtube, I found Fred's hideout. Loved that back pack of his.
Same here. *NOBODY FREAKING REMEMBERS!!!* I was starting to think I'd just imagined this. Glad I finally found it though and that I know I'm not crazy.
Could not remember for the life of me the name of the show. I would just say a guy in his 30s goes through the woods and crawls through a log and comes out into a beautiful open area. Sings songs for kids and has puppet friends lol... Now i find him.. Yay!! So many memories.
Gee whiz, we really are all connected! "Dude crawls into & out of a log." is EXACTLY what I remembered & told people when I talked about it. Nobody remembered it...but y'all do! How freakin cool!!
Being 5 and liking this. I regret nothing. Fred Penner was a wholesome power that no longer exists as strongly. Oddly enough I had turned on the TV and noticed the cable was off, (it turns on to tvo) and he's there singing. First it was the cat came back, then home on the range. Still has charm. It's a pity my daughter is too young to retain this (almost 4 months) she'll see, hear and smile, but she won't recall it. I think finding these old gems and Mr. Dressup will add something lost to her generation.
I had the wonderful privilege of seeing Fred Penner live at my university a couple of years back. He's definitely gone gray but otherwise has hardly aged a day, and sounds exactly the same. Maybe children's television doesn't exist as strongly anymore, especially in Canada, but Fred himself is as great now as he's ever been.
OMG this was the first show I watched as a 7-8 years old back in 1989 and I am seeing it after 22 years, it brings really nice memories, the theme of the show always sticks with you even after 23 years! Thanks for the upload!
For this to come out the year I was born (88) and for me to love it so much just makes it all the more cool that I got the opportunity to share a friendly beers with Fred at North Country Fair a few year back. As a 30 year old I can say that Fred made a huge impact in my life! Sometimes, you can meet your heroes.
Wow 😯. I didn’t know that! I was born near the end of (87) so not too much different. That’s awesome you got to meet him! 😎 I do think people like this have made a positive difference 🥹. Remember Mr. DressUp and Under the Umbrella Tree? I think one of these shows came after another so I’d at least hear the intro 🎶. Probably on PBS station. Lol, even that station reminds me of childhood 😂
I remember this! admit forgot what was called but still remember the intro of him crawling into the secret log/tunnel and sitting in that area of his forest singing, this brings back LOTS of memories now, cant say how long I was trying to find this and remember exact what it was!
This music brings back so many childhood memories 😢, growing up in the Detroit area in the 90s this is what I watched cause we couldn't afford cable. 😢
I still count my blessings growing up in Detroit. Not only did we get PBS tv with Spanish Sesame Street, but we also got beautiful children’s shows on CBC from across the river in Windsor like Under the umbrella tree, French Sesame Street, and of course…Fred Penner’s Place. I’m always grateful for growing up and being able to ‘join’ him along at his cool hideout in the woods with great music, etc. Thank you, Fred, for not only bringing joy to Canadian children, but American children, as well.
I would have never looked for this stuff to bring me back ol memory lane. then, I had kids. now I love looking up this stuff and returning to a kid-if only for a moment or so. thanks Fred Penner!
I have been looking for YEARS for this show. I always remembered it when I was a kid, could never remember the name but I always remembered a man that had a secret hideout in the woods and he hopped over a fence to get there and he played a guitar. Tonight I finally found it. Brings back so many memories sitting on my grandmother’s floor early in the morning watching this waiting for Barney to come on.
So true! I wish I could warp my childhood into a neat little package so that my kids could experience all the great shows and cartoons we grew up with.
I've been trying to remember the name of this show forever. Finally dug through the wikipedia of old Nick programming. All I could remember was the log and him playing acoustic guitar. Nostalgia overload for sure
Nickelodeon’s Nick Jr. used to air Fred Penner’s Place in the early 90s when I started watching Nickelodeon as a child! I didn’t watch this as often as some others, but when I did, I enjoyed Fred and his secret place.
It's funny how Fred Penner was not much older than your parents if you were an 80s kid..now he is a grandfather. Rock on Fred thanks for bringing a taste of Canada to the states.
Watching all these old 80s/90s kids shows I used to love....but now on RU-vid, and seeing and hearing them for the first time in ages, made me realize.... No wonder I love vaporwave so much.
Fred Penner's Place was so awesome! When I was a kid, I actually believed his secret tunnel led to this magical place in the Canadian woods somewhere! :-D
When I was little I was convinced my neighbor/best friend Russ was actually Fred Penner. Russ was mysteriously never around when Fred Penner was on... (at 11am on weekdays lol)
Growing up a little south of Buffalo we could get Canadian stations with the big 'ol roof antenna. I loved watching this show. When I got older I seriously thought I'd made it up since none of my friends knew what I was talking about!! So glad to find this so I can show them all I wasn't crazy!! I love Fred Penner!!!
I have been trying to remember the name of this show for years...All I could remember was him crawling through the log. I Loved this show when I was younger.
I realize something after listening to this now as an adult... I believe THIS is one form of what Bob Marley calls "..the songs of freedom". When Fred says, "keep the beat anyway you like", and "it doesn't matter what you wear as long as you are there", those are auto-suggestive conditionings that impressed our psyches in our formative years encouraging us to NOT conform but to simply accept diversity and to be ourselves. Amazing. No wonder Nirvana resonated with us once we hit our teens!
