celebrity influencers who let themselves go - the glow down.

‘Selena Gomez has let herself go!’ ‘Lindsay Lohan has lost her looks!’ ‘Britney got fat!’ ‘Gigi had a glow down!’ - this notion that women can ‘lose their looks’, ‘let themselves go’ or have a ‘glow down’ is unfortunately rampant in our society today. In my previous video discussing the alleged ‘glow down’ of Gigi Hadid, I wanted to explore this concept as its one that I too feel personally effected by, however i think we need to delve deeper on this subject. In our society today, its as though a woman’s worth (especially if she is a celebrity or influencer) is based on her looks. And more specifically, maintaining them no matter what. If a woman shows signs of ageing? Lost her looks. If she gains weight? Let herself go. If she stops placing so much emphasis on her physical looks and instead focusses on a different area of her life? Glow down. It’s not right - but it is happening.
This video is a bit of a mishmash tbh. A rant, a deep dive - i don’t know. I wasn’t even planning to film today. But this is something I really felt like talking about after seeing my YT comments this morning. Let me know if you guys have ever felt pressured to look younger, to maintain your weight - not for health reasons but for your appearance, to snap back into shape after pregnancy - it’s all the same. it all boils down to the unrealistic expectations that we have for women as regards to their looks. WOMEN (including celebs and influencers) DON’T OWE THE WORLD PRETTY! It’s ok for us to change! It’s OK for us to prioritise other aspects of our lives other than what we look like aesthetically FOR OTHER PEOPLE.
Gosh!

I'm a 40 year old mom, and I've been told that I "let myself go". I dye out my grays, I botox my forehead, but I'm about 25 pounds overweight. I'm a mom, I work 45+hours a week, and I'm freaking tired, what more does society want from me?! This is exactly why I LOVE your videos. It gives me the courage and confidence to tell those who don't like my looks to f off!

We never treat male celebrities the same way. Leonardo DiCaprio and Jack Nicholson are allowed to age and no one gives them s--- for it. For the most part, Hollywood ignores male celebrities who gain weight or age, unless they're someone like Brendan Fraser who was once a huge sex symbol, but don't even get me started on that because that poor man has been through the wringer and must be protected at all costs. Anyway, wishing you a safe and easy delivery, Stephanie!

Although celebrity men aren't held to the same beauty standard as women in Hollywood, men's mental health is greatly affected. Gay men in particular face huge bouts of fat-shaming, ageist comments, and ridicule for not looking perfect. It's more insidious: within the community itself (bodybuilding, bars, clubs, online ads). The truth is bad mental health sells products, and if you look at studies made for men on self-image and mental health, it's really bad too. The suicide rate for boys and young men has SKYROCKETED in the last ten years. There's a body standard for them that's completely unachievable. So, just because male celebrities aren't in the magazine's eye like women are, doesn't mean young impressionable minds aren't suffering on social media because of an unrealistic beauty standard perpetuated by marketing products, diets, and plastic surgery.

Bc the money is in women being insecure aka make up, products, surgeries. Men do things but not to the extend of women. We are just a market. We are being used and the media are probably paid big to help push the agenda. If we all stop falling for the tricks I think we would see a big shift.

Something I've realized as I age is that my level of "glow" does not correlate with my level of health or happiness. The two times I was at my thinnest, and most met the traditional beauty standards, I was also at my least healthy and saddest. I received constant compliments, but that didn't change my physical or mental health. We've all been so conditioned to think that how well you're doing in life is directly linked to how closely you fit traditional beauty standards, but that absolutely isn't the case. I think as you age you start to realize how little those superficial markers matter, and the things that make people really beautiful are traits like authenticity, kindness, and empathy.

Completely agree to this. The times when I put most effort into my looks were times where I was most insecure and afraid to not fit a beauty standard. Since then I often imagine people who care a lot about their looks are quite unhappy. Naturally that's not always true, but I started to associate working so hard to fit a beauty standard with unhappiness. I mean it has to be exhausting. So, when I see people caring less about looks, I hope it's because they found a happier and healthier life for themselves.

I needed this video. I have started to see the first signs of aging: grey hairs, fine lines on my face, even hair thinning. I have been lauded for my beauty for my whole life and it is a lot of pressure to be honest. Many people say “you’re so blessed to be attractive” and while I agree it is also a curse. Something I wasn’t prepared for was the amount of pressure I feel to maintain youth now. It was never an issue before and now suddenly I find myself having to put those thoughts in their place that say you’re becoming irrelevant or that I need to fix myself. It is truly a struggle to continue to love and appreciate oneself when these things start to change and I love that you are acknowledging that. Steph, I have never commented on a video but had to this time. I have watched every single video on your channel since stumbling onto it 2 years ago. Thank you for spreading this message far and wide, and showing to everyone how insane, unrealistic and detrimental society's beauty standard have become. Just like you say, we have become so used to fake 'perfection' that we forget what a real, normal and healthy human being looks like, and we shame others and ourselves for not looking perfect all the f*cking time. I guess if everyone felt great about their body, there wouldn't be such a huge cosmetic industry, there wouldn't rhinoplasties and botox and fillers, there wouldn't be diets to sell or personalised workout plans. Our society makes us feel sh*t about our looks by shoving ultra-edited photos of "body goals" into our faces, so we buy things we don't need, with money we don't have, to please people we don't like. The madness must stop. I am a tall, slim, 29 years old with long blonde hair that today's society standards would usually consider "beautiful". Truth is I never felt as such, and had to battle horrible fixations about my "small breasts", "too big of a nose", and tiny "belly rolls there". What a waste of time that was! I started to truely like my body and feel confident in my skin only by rejecting the importance of beauty altogether. My body is a wonderful vessel, and I'm grateful that it is strong, healthy (for now), and takes me hiking to really beautiful places. It's a vessel that harbours all my emotions, ideas and memories. It's so much more than a number on a scale or a number of likes on a photo. So f*ck Instagram culture, f*ck diets, f*ck 'body goals', f*ck this shallow, image-obsessed society. Let's be healthy and enjoy our time on this planet while it lasts 💗 Thank you Steph - love from Cairns.

This needs to be talked about more! I turned 41 this year and ever since I was in my late 30's I have started to feel bad about myself. Everywhere I look there are ads and influencers and people who look young and products that promise to keep you from getting wrinkly and old and how horrible it is to look old or age. I'm so sick of it! It seems like I focus on this every single day more and more and mainly because it's always in my face. I just want to take care of myself, enjoy life and age gracefully without society making me feel bad for something I have no control over. Why do woman have to try to "maintain" and keep their "looks" all of their life but men can be who they are and get old and fat and no one says anything to them
@blufluffya_496
@blufluffya_496 Год назад
Preach, as soon as I hit my 30's all of the sudden I had new worries of growing old and no longer looking youthful.... it's a constant struggle to remind myself that quality of life and happiness is not dependent on looks... it's completely possible to love and live life even in later stages of it...and if it helps... all these young people... will age eventually, and they too will also reach a point where even plastic surgery won't save their youthful looks anymore... we simply can't avoid it as the human race... I do think it is super annoying that a female's worth and beauty is considered lesser than just because they age.... but then again, that's determined by men and media, and we can choose to not give their opinions so much weight in our own lives.. metaphorically give them the finger 😋

I completely agree! But I really appreciated that Stephanie explained why she uses more 'clickbait' titles and I get it now. I've always loved the content of her videos and I really love that she works hard to spread this message. But I used to be frustrated with her choice of wording in titles because if you don't know her content then you might expect her to say the complete opposite just based on the titles alone. So I suspect that a lot of these people who say such horrible things just respond to the tile and don't actually watch the video, which is very sad. I think you're right that they actually need and they are probably craving the positive message that Stephanie is spreading ❤❤

For me, a teenager, your videos really help me, they make me feel a little less bad every time because you simply show what is real, the simple truth. Sometimes it is important to know what is real so you don't have unrealistic expectations for yourself and bring yourself down with it. For me, I was born under-weigh but than stared gaining weigh(I was also really short then) so i looked really chubby, during this time I had a lot of personal issues and eating made me feel a lot better but than people started commenting on my body. My relatives, people I considered my friends and such, I started becoming really insecure. My eating portions really dropped, I started self harming too.. I was self-harming so much didn't eat and lost around 8kgs in less than 2 months. I'm 5'5 and I was weighing less than 40kgs, was extremely anemic, didn't get my period for months and got a few health complications. I still feel sick when I eat sometimes but I'm doing a lot better now BECAUSE I watch videos like these and lot of other self-love and confidence videos.

I don't usually comment on videos, but that beginning discussion about people criticizing what you're doing as a way to project your own insecurities and directing negative comments about your body at you just...man, did that light a fire under me. That made me so angry. You're so honest and kind about the people you cover in your videos - you honestly give your opinion about what they may or may not have had done, very clearly show the proof of an edited image, compliment them in their ACTUAL bodies and not the fake ones they portray, and still leave with a positive note for anyone and everyone to take home with them. I know you don't necessarily need to hear it, but you deserve to have a ton of people remind you of the opposite of those nasty, spiteful watchers: you are gorgeous just as you are, inside and out. You're an inspiration and a great comfort to so many of us who struggle with confidence and self-love and respect. You encourage us to love ourselves and not compare ourselves to what we see on social media, because social media is simply a portrayal of a person that the person themselves designed. Of course they look good, and they are truly gorgeous in their bodies. But what they show isn't real, and you help remind us all of what is real and what is not, and what's truly important. You're a fantastic person, Stephanie, and I will forever be thankful for your channel. Keep being wonderful. Don't let those nasty people put a damper on your efforts.

Please know you’re helping WAY more people than those negative people who wrote those ugly comments. People who post shit like that are already angry for whatever reason. Seriously, the fact that what we call a “glow down” is LITERAL aging pisses me off. The fact is: human beings all “peak” and begin a gradual decline. Some do it earlier, some face it later. We ALL must have endure it. Some try to stave it off unnaturally with surgery or “tweakments” and I don’t blame them- aging is scary. But we should all be so lucky to actually experience the process of aging- it turns us into who we really are inside and gives us the ability to realize the more beautiful parts of life… being accepted as who you are and not for what you look like!

Stephanie, ever since I moved to Canada I felt a big pressure to use fillers. They are very popular here and I started to feel very insecure, but your videos made me realize how silly I was to think that I have to change body for a trend :) Thanks for stopping me from wrecking my face ❤❤

My most favourite pictures of myself and my family are candid shots. They are the ones that bring back memories and make you giggle when you see them. FYI, you are perfect, there is no one else just like you on the planet. I love your content. Thanks!

you are not ugly or irrelevant at all and you shouldn't shut up! can't belive people are like that towards you. i think you are a very high quality source of information. nothing wrong with loving beauty and aestethics though, but each to their own, we should not push anything on each other :)
