Celestion G12t-75 Vs G12-65 Shootout

Celestion G12t-75 Vs G12-65 is a not a very common Celestion speaker mix even though as they are largely know as Marshalls stock speakers from around 1979 to present (with a few exceptions in between). At Zilla Cabs we rarely get asked for it, and the mix really rocks for many different style.
The Celestion G12tt75 (T75) is more commonly known as the stock Marshall 4x12 speaker since the mid 80s. It can get a bad wrap, but we don't think it deserves that. The Celestion G12-65 is known as a more electric blues/blues rock style speaker used often by users of more boutique amps.
To do this we recorded both speakers in an identical 1x12 setup, same mics, mic placements, amps and settings by re-amping the same scenario through several different styles.
We love to hear your thoughts on anything speaker related, if you've used this pair before or the individual speakers, or if you have any suggestions please get in touch.

I've kind of arrived at the conclusion that Metallica's secret Ride the Lightning sauce is the G12-65 and this video has confirmed it. People obsess over the tone settings, but the truth is you can turn knobs all day long and you won't make as much difference as 1) the Sonic signature of the speakers and 2) the pickups, which were some standard somewhat hot Gibson's (most likely 500T as that's what they put in the explorers of the time). And spare me the argument about actives or Duncan Invaders. They used Invaders to record Master and they didn't start using actives until the tour for Master of Puppets. Facts.

The 75 sounds more like RTL to me, it has that same high end to it you can hear on the album. The 65 just sounds too muddy.

Get G1265 for flatness, sweet mids and attenuated highs. Especially for some open backs. It's great for blues and older, classic rock. The T75 has huge low mids scoop plus some high end chainsaw sizzle. It is great for 80s hardcore punk/ thrash/ metal.

The 65 sounds sweeter and smoother in The top end, works great with 60s style singles, the 75 are way more spanky and should match better 50s single coils. With overdrive the 65 smoothness deliver a far more vintage, almost record like sound, but the 75 has that presence and zzzing that vibes more alive. I feel that while the 65 might be a fine stand alone speaker (better than the 75) the 75 coupled with a more middy speaker (a V30 for example) can deliver in spades and be more enjoyable and rock just better. Great vid btw!
@lovecraftmusic8717
@lovecraftmusic8717 3 года назад
People keep believing that T75 and v30 is a good match... Totally wrong! V30 has 100db sensitivity while the T75 has 97db. This alone should prove that volume wise, the T75 would disappear... Moreover the v30 is a fucking chainsaw and its freqs are much more bright, harsh, cutting and unpleasantly ear-piercing compared to the T75 that is darker and with less mids. Stop this myth.

@@lovecraftmusic8717 I've tried plenty of times, the V30 is indeed louder but you can still hear the t75, and it delivers too.

For over 30 years I could never use Celestion speakers......that was until I decided to try a set of 65's. Wow, the sound I've been looking. I always used Eminence but something was always missing. Top end chime perhaps? They never had "that" sound that makes you think Rock / Metal, etc. The 65's nail the sound. No top end fizz and cutting broad midrange.

two speakers that represents two different eras of Rock and Metal, i think (with G12-65s being late 70s to early 80s while G12T-75s being late 80s to 90s)

Important to know that g12t/75’s from the 80’s/early 90’s sound completely different than a modern g12t-75. The original t75’s sounded way more like g12-65’s

G12-65 for the win. It sounds massive with none of the annoying high end resonant frequency. The G12T-75 sounded better for the clean tones, though.

I like the t75 better for its aggressiveness... Seems like you have more distortion but it also has that zing that is a bit too much; if only it had less... Maybe mixing just one t75 in a 4x12 with other 3 g65 would be a good match.

T-75 has a top emphasis that's good for clean but fizzy with gain. Probably bad for amps voiced like H&K Grandmeister which has a tendency to be fizzy to begin with.

I know what you mean there, I think that can be worked in to some sounds, especially with lower gain.. when that happens I call it more of grit or bite than fizz, but I do know what you mean.

I'll be perfectly honest here, I don;t think our recording of the G12-65 in this situation quite gave it justice. We recorded a whole bunch of speakers in the same setting but I think the G12-65 suffered the most of the inflexible way we recorded the speakers... that said, nothing wrong wit preferring the T75, I love that speaker. Thanks for watching.

The 16 ohm T75 is a bit harsh due to it's extended high end, but I'd wager the 8 ohm version of the T75 would give the 15 ohm G12-65 a run for its money.

I’ve got a 1960a cabinet with four original G 12 -65 speakers from 1985. Looking to pull two of them and replace with something else. What would be a good speaker to complement the G 12-65 for 70s rock tones? Greenbacks? Cream backs? Would love to hear your suggestions. And as always great video

Hi Bryan, I love the greenbacks with the G12-65, I actually like the neo creambacks too. I think we should have a video on 21 speakers vs the G12-65, if we haven't put it up yet I'll try and get that post up in the net week or so. G12t75 had better note individuation, it sits on top of the mix, the harsh brightness could be dialed out... The other speaker (which I have in an amp currently) is better if you want it to sound like a mush ball & be buried in the mix. FYI: I play low/medium gain, so I'm not talking about a chugga chugga tone.
