Celestion G12t-75 Vs Vintage 30 is a well known mix, maybe not as widely used as you may think but still a great combination and one worth looking in to.
The Celestion G12tt75 (T75) is more commonly known as the stock Marshall 4x12 speaker since the mid 80s. It can get a bad wrap, but we don't think it deserves that. The Celestion Vintage 30 is known by nearly all guitar players, stock in a lot of the most common guitar cabients and used on countless recordings and by countless bands.
To do this we recorded both speakers in an identical 1x12 setup, same mics, mic placements, amps and settings by re-amping the same scenario through several different styles.
We love to hear your thoughts on anything speaker related, if you've used this pair before or the individual speakers, or if you have any suggestions please get in touch.

I prefer a V30 because it is darker so it doesn't get to fizzy when adding distortion and the midrange is much better especially for dropped tuned guitars. For metal the V30 is a winner hands down, but for cleans and crunch those T75 can really hold their own better than people expect them to do.

I really like both of these loudspeakers. The differences may not be that noticeable on clean settings but throw some gain at them & that's where you can hear the differences. I currently own a pair of each. Both are great speakers. They are the two most popular speakers in the Celestion catalog for modern rock & metal.

That's right, cleans not really that useful for hearing speakers, especially over youtube (not in the room) but gain starts to show their individual characteristics for sure. There's not a lot of love for the T75 but I really like it too. Thanks for watching.

Another great vid. These two guys really complement each other. The V30 is very precise, middy and clear, but lacks extension, it's like a very muscular and mean macho dwarf. Works, but gets annoying after a while. Also, most say it cuts like a knife, and it does, but in a dual guitar band it does not sound that good, sounds like a weeping kid especially if the other guy has a T75. The 75 is a VERY tall yet skinny guy with huge feet: it's not muscular, and really lacks fullness and body, but covers the sun when standing in front of ya. In the dual guitar mix, with added treble and some volume kills the V30. But together,oh boy. It's a pissed of big Jim with a rusty metal bad full of nails.

Sounds like the difference is in how they handle the midrange. Both the V30 and T75 sound deep and solid, but the V30 sounds clearer in the midrange, while the T75 sounds a bit scooped, which makes it spikier. So, in this demo, I think I prefer the V30.

It's a mental thing... if T-75's are "stock" then of course, they automatically need to be "upgraded" just in the same way that the pickups that come "stock" in a guitar... automatically need to be upgraded to "X" brand pickups.

@@MrJam1001 One trick you might want to try is use a really long (25'+) speaker cable... it acts like an inductor and will help smooth out that high end fang the T75's can have. If you're running a 16 ohm cabinet you can use the 8 ohm tap to lose a little efficiency and smooth your tone even more. The 8 ohm tap seems to sound better than the 16 ohm tap IMO anyway but your mileage may vary. Good luck 👍🎸

I tried V30s and Greenbacks in the same 412 cab and they were just cancelling each other out. The thing we don't know about Zilla demos is how hard these speakers are driven in relation to their maximum power. I experimented with T100. When driven at 20-30W it sounds boxy, spikey, plasticky and overall shitty. But at >70W it's just stellar. Fast, smooth, punchy, juicy. I assume it might be similar with T75.
@ZillaCabs
@ZillaCabs 3 года назад
That's a fair comment. We probably push them at around 20 watts. The trouble is there are so many variables and we were recording over twenty speakers that we tried to be fair to as many speakers as possible. I'll say though, for most speakers, around ten watts should be enough to get them moving alright, I know there are some exceptions. Thanks for watching and its a great comment.

Guys, one question. How does a bigger dust cap affects the sound, and in consequence the sweet spot location in a speaker? You state in your description that you used same mike position. There is an internet myth that says the aiming where the cone meets the dust cap is where the money is. But i always wondered if because of this idea, people tend to mike speakers like the T75, way too into the cone, losing mids and the frequency content to properly work in a mix. I would love to know your take on this. Thanks!

It's a complicated thing, recording and sound engineering, everything affects anything. You may also record totally on axis but from a larger distance from the cone, mic slanted, off axis close, away, anything, the room plays a HUGE part, as the cab and anything in the rig.

The T75 has higher treble definition, which works against it with high level distortion. So the t75 sounds fizzy with high distortion, although it is more accurately reproducing the input signal. The V30 is built so that it turns that fizz signal into bite. So I would go with a T75 for southern rock, older classic rock, jazz, blues, and pop. Anytime you get into metal territory the V30 will blow it away. I'm thinking of pairing one with an EVM12-L to see what happens. Thanks for the video.

Though I like the T75, the V30 is the one that is obviously flatter- both on frd and in a real in person scenario. The T75 is all steer tops and drops across the spectrum plus has a high end standalone peak pretty unnatural- that's where its suzzle comes, under distortion. The V30 is both middy and bright, but EVENLY middy and bright- it's all about the proportions of elements of each. I agree on the rest. Cheers.

I currently have 2 G12T-75s and 2 WGS retro 30s in an X pattern in a 4x12 and 2 V30s in a 2x12 cab...I am going to try and put the retro 30s in the 2x12 and put the G12T-75s and V30s in the X pattern in the 4x12 because I dig this combo here in the video and the WGS Retro 30s are a bit different....aren't speaker swaps fun 😊

I know what you mean, the T75 is a cool speaker but in certain circumstances there is a quality that can be seen (or heard) as slightly harsh, and the V30 has less of that.

I'm running a V30 16ohm and celestion lead 80 (16) in a stack. Not a common mix. It does everything everything except metal ( cause I havent tried it) The T75 is a serious speaker would like to try them in my fender twin. Thanks for making these videos!

I fell like g75 has more fuller sound, has a extra high end frequencie together with the mids. Greenback is more simple sound. Maybe a EQ adjust in the head can make a g75 sound like a greenback, not 100%, but similar. But if you want pop that high end you can, Grint. I use this every time in my 4x12 with marshall head.

V30 has a little more mid-highs in respect to G12T-75. Difference is more present in player's hands than who is listening to the guitarist.

The t-75 and the marshall branded g-12v have one thing in common. They come stock in marshall cabnets. Anything stock is no good in basement/ bedroom land. Both of those speakers are the disliked for that reason. It's pathetic.

Ace video! Seriously considering pairing a 1936 Vintage with my current standard 1936 for my JVM 410 (with the V30 cab on top)! I love the sound I get from the t75 cab BUT I find it can sound a tad muddy in the higher reaches (gain @ 10 o'clock +) of the OD channels and lacks a bit of top-end definition on the crunch channel without literally diming the Treble. Although if I sit on the floor directly in front of the speakers (which hurts after a while 😂) it's much clearer. Anyway has anyone tried this config and if yes, what are your thoughts? Cheers 😁

Ok, g12 75 speakers are pretty dead sounding until you push them so crap for recording at lower levels but brilliant for stage use, v30 speakers sound similar at low volume and when pushed so I can understand why people depend on them.

A few years before I changed from a Marshall 1960 lead cabinet to two 1936V Cabinets running a stereo rig. It was for for transport reasons - that's when I begun to get unhappy with my rig! First of all I discovered that even near microphoning in the Studio can't make a 2x12 Cabinet sound as good as a 4x12 one and than the switch to Vintage 30 Speakers made me nuts! I tried a mix between T75 and V30 - never got happy again with my sound until i got rid of both - the V30 Speakers and the 2x12 Cabinets! These V30 Speakers are a pain in the ass for me - these fuzzy, raspy mids ruin the overalll sound of everything you put through them! I never got why they went so popular? I have a theory that it begun with the down-tuning hype...
