Cessna 185 | Taking off and Landing on a Muddy Jungle Airstrip

We fly our Cessna 185 into some of the most remote jungle regions in the Asian/Pacific. It is always a challenge to deal with weather and rain and properly evaluate airstrip conditions. This airstrip wasn't very wet for any of these clips. When it's really wet, one landing will sling mud from spinner to beacon and wing tip to wing tip. It's a short and soft field.

I had a former NTM flyer instruct me in the 185. He was truly a master at his craft and an excellent teacher.

Creativity is not something I thought would be required in bush flying. Being wrong could have major consequences! Thanks for all you do out there!

That is so neat , i learnt in an 1954 c.170. When i first flew an 185 , absolutely loved the grunt. I would love to spend time sitting in the right hand seat while you flew into these places.

Great work. I used to deliver C180's, 185's and 188's from Wichita to all over. I miss that fun job.

Yeah they are in the RP. You're correct that they are 100% visual, no flight plans, no nav aids etc. It's old school VFR. Because we're in the mountains and usually well below the terrain we don't go IMC enroute or on approach. Staying VFR in deteriorating tropical weather is by far the most challenging part of the flights. It takes some pretty good knowledge of the terrain, weather patterns and experience flying clear of clouds. It's a lot of fun but gets stressful at times.

It's a standard IO-520 with a three blade prop (not the 86" Black Mac). So standard in the power department. We have the Robertson drooping aileron STC, a Sportsman leading edge, ART wing tip extensions and VGs on the wings.

I used to do that in the Central African Republic and on takeoff I prayed my engine did not even skip a beat...!!! I did 50 hr inspections every 25 hrs and 100 hr inspections every 50 hrs... on the engine,not airframe... it got its usual...!!!

Skillful flying,that mud is no joke to handle as for the weather,how do you even find these airstrips ?
@bbpruett
@bbpruett 12 лет назад
@dondycluck We use GPS supported by sectionals and knowledge of the area. A new pilot is required to do a thorough checkout before he can fly here. It's often in marginal weather in the mountains so you have to always know where you are (especially if the GPS fails) and how you can get yourself out of it if the need arises.

Great bushflying vídeo. Thanks. As far as I understand, you work - or have been working - in Philippines for NTM (News Tribes Mission). Am I correct? Where has this video been shot, exactly? Do you fly only Cessna 185 or NTM fleet includes other aircrafts?

@axs12345 I couldn't agree more about the benefits of big tires. The bottom line is that we don't have the money to do it just yet, but it's on the list of mods to add. It will save money in the long run too cause of less shock at the gear attach points. Trust me, the day I can put bigger tires on, I will. For now, the tires digging into the mud on landing actually helps get the plane stopped, and soft field takeoff technique keeps it floating just enough for a good takeoff.

Also wondering if you have ever been caught in IMC while flying those approaches.
@bbpruett
@bbpruett 13 лет назад
@kenjordans As you approach and fly past/over the ridges, your actual height above the ground is always changing. Sometimes you are 2000' above ground, sometimes 10.' However, the height you are concerned about is only the height above the touchdown zone. In addition to all that, the first half of the runway is significantly downhill so a normal approach looks like you're too low when in fact you're angle is right on. You have to use creative cues to help overcome the illusions.
@F18EDriver
@F18EDriver 12 лет назад
After talking about this video with some guys in my squadron we were curious about your flights. This looks to be somewhere in southeast Asia, I'm guessing the Philippines. Do you file flight plans at all? How are the approaches flown? GPS? Sectionals? 100% visually? There can't be any nav aids in such remote places like that.

why dont you get bigger weels like they use in alaska they float better on the mud and you get more lift under wing in take off meaning you can take off in shorter fields and land in shorter fields but nice terrain and good flying

Of course $1000 would help! We're a non-profit organization that operates off of donations so ultimately the funds would need to come from donors. We are trying to save money for mods out of our flight hour billing, but it's a bit slow going.
