A leaking wheel seal on my 8.75" axle leads to a bearing change, adventures with my press, and wondering WTF the last owner was thinking.

Excellent video. I love that you kept it real by showing all the speed bumps you encountered. Some people like to make everything look fast & easy. Thanks for the familiarization! I appreciate it!

Great video you really explained it well, some people say you need that inner seal in some people say you don’t. I’m gonna go with you on this one.

Wasnt that the adjuster nut on the passenger side? You would just take a hammer and punch to adj the freeplay.. or am i looking at that wrong?

It's half of an adjuster. It's just sitting there with nothing to thread to for actually adjusting the preload. Whoever was in there before me made a real mess of things.

The slip joint should be on the transmission side. All that I have seen anyway.

I cannot remember the name of the piece that comes between the axles, but did you remove it?? Is it NOT an issue to leave inside?? I have green bearings in my 65' Dodge 8 3/4, but did the entire rear end at one time, so I removed it while the pig was out.

It's a thrust spacer, and IIRC they're only there on sure-grip differentials. It's not an issue to leave it in between the axles with green bearings. If it somehow fell out and into the carrier, that would be a problem, but can really only happen if you stick something in there with both axles removed. If you have the 3rd member out, then I'd remove it.

You put a Shivvy part in it? Ew. I bet it's slower now.

Do you daily it? The green bearings in my 8 3/4 lasted about a year in my daily. Replaced them and was surprised how small the actual bearings are. Now the Trans-Am cars use the stock bearings also. They do not use the green bearings because the Trans-Am cars corner. Just something to add to the debate.

I've used green bearings in every 8.75 I've owned since about 1992 including several daily drivers and on cross-country road trips. I've never had one fail.

Did you go with 15” to center for both sides? Have to do mine from scratch

I don't understand the question. 15" to the center of what?

Do you happen to have the part number for the newer style bearing?

Looks like the part number is MO400. Here they are from Dr. Diff: www.doctordiff.com/green-bearings-pair.html

I've got a question. That material that looked to be destroyed. Did you ever find out it's purpose? I've got an 8.75 rear that I installed Green bearings on & I'm having an issue getting the axles back into the housing. It looks like there is material like yours that MIGHT have to be removed from my housing before the axles can be seated fully. Did you have that issue on your drivers side?

I think you mean the repair sleeve that someone put on the axle (poorly). That would be potentially bad for the seal but won't affect getting the axle back in. How far off it yours? Did you get the bearing pressed all the way on (no gap between it and the shoulder on the axle)? Backing plates are on and factory thickness?

@YoshimoshiGarage Yes. I had my axle bearings done at a professional machine shop. They're very reputable & have been in business since the 60's. The splines on both axle shafts begin to engage the carrier then stop. The pinion turns, but the bearings only go into the housing like a 16th of an inch, then stop. I've tried turning while pushing in & tapping on the ends with a dead blow hammer. Both sides just die. I even went so far as to remove the button or cylinder in the carrier that keeps the axles from contacting each other. I'm stumped!

Nice. Mopar guy. Subscribed! Just put a 8.75 in my 96 Dakota and I had to do the axle bearings. Simple enough! What truck is this axle in anyway? I don't see too many in trucks.

Use a Factory service manual. You wasted so much time...

I have an FSM. I don't have any of the factory tools, so I would have ended up in the same place anyway.
