Changing the Gearing on my 2022 Honda Grom & More Top Speed Runs

The new 2022 Honda Grom with the 5-speed gear box has a 15/38 stock setup so in this video, I lower the rear sprocket to a 37 to see if I can get more use out of the full range now that I'm making more power. I also see if the power is enough to push the lower ratio of gears to a higher top speed.

Honda recommended for 1 teeth at front is 3 on the back sprocket, 2022 has 15T aft front and 34T on the back, but this year the Grom has 15T at front and 38T on the back. Today is custom made sprocket 13T at front and up to 51T on the back, idont know if is good idea to go that high on the back because the lowest man can go at front is 13T, something has to be giving up.

Yep, still playing around with the gearing. I actually have 14/37 on right now. I can redline 4th again, overall range of gearing feels ok. Top speed was still only about 74mph in 5th gear. The 5th gear ratio is pretty tall, it's 27/32 so it looks like i'm going to need to make quite a bit more power to be able to pull hard in that gear. The new problem is that since both gears are smaller in diameter, the chain is rubbing too much on the swingarm - I just ordered the 39T to see what a 15/39 feels like, I'll eventually do an update video on the gears, I'm sure I'll keep changing the gearing as the power changes.

Alright here’s a question for you, I know it’s not the smartest or most convenient motorcycle to do a trip on but I want to give it a whirl. I too have a 2022 Honda grom. So far I have the chimera intake, zoom “no loop” exhaust and coming in the mail is the DHM stage 3 high compression piston and cam along with my ECU I sent to them to get re-flashed. With that said I’m planning a roughly 1300 mile trip all backroads from PA to Niagara Falls, Toronto, Montreal, than back down through New York to PA with a bud “alllll back roads”. I’ll probably have 35lbs of extra gear with me. With that said what’s your professional opinion on sprocket set up? I want a little lower RPM’s at speed but a little higher Top end. Im new to the whole sprocket ⚙️ game, but I was thinking what, 16T front with a 36R ? The little bit of power mods should help with the “get up” but not much but I’m not doing a cannon ball run or anything. And what for chain do you recommend? I’ve heard great things about DID chains and I plan on running all steel sprockets for longevity. Any help is much appreciated! Thank you very much and I love your channel!
@eastcoastish
@eastcoastish 2 года назад
I'd love to do a road trip like that on a Grom! So definitely not a professional, but I think 16/36 would be much too tall gearing for the power that bike would be making, especially with added luggage. The stock 15/38 gearing in 5th gear is already over a 1:1 ratio so cruising in 5th should be pretty efficient. I'm running 15/39 at the moment so that I can get more use out of 5th gear. The tallest gearing I'd go would be like the 15/37 I did in the video; depending on your weight, anything more would probably be inefficient for the motor.

Hey man, I've been debating on changing my sprockets from stock. I have a 2022 with an intake, exhaust & DHM tune. Full tuck I can hit about 72, and I don't want to sacrifice top speed. I'm debating going down to 14t in the front and leaving the rear at the stock 38t. Or going down to 14t in the front and 39t rear. From my research on older groms, going down 1 tooth up front and up 1 in the rear will give slight acceleration gains and keep top speed the same. Initial plans were for 14t/40t. But I worry that would mess with my top speed.
@eastcoastish
@eastcoastish Год назад
The gearing is all about the ratio. And no matter what you can't have both, you either gain acceleration at the sacrifice of top speed or vice versa. With your mods though, you're probably not making it all the way through 5th gear so a bit more acceleration is the way to go. Going down in the front = more acceleration and going up in the rear = more acceleration. 1 tooth in the front is about the same as 2.5 teeth in the back so you can make big adjustments with the front sprocket and fine adjustments with the rear. I've been happy with just the 39 tooth (+1) in the rear (and keeping the stock 15t front sprocket). The front sprocket is cheap though so if you want to see what the increased accel feels like, buy a 14t front sprocket and go from there.

I just ordered a 14t counter sprocket. It needs it. Even with the light mods I did, cam, exhaust, intake, and aRacer…… the bike will still not come anywhere close to pulling decently in 5th. The bike will be overall faster on top because the 14t will allow the Grom to get out of it’s own way….. and therefore more mph in 5th despite the 14t counter. PS Vortex makes nice rear sprockets for the 22. I have an aluminum 38t. PS Those temp guns don’t really have the resolution to measure individual coils. You had it too far back and it was just measuring the general area. Also, the laser is just a pointer. It’s not measuring “the dot” specifically. Most people don’t realize that. Those temp guns lose accuracy for every inch that your further away. Look on the package or the gun itself and it should have the proper measuring area range and the progressive error percentage as it’s further away.

Like eastcoastish said dhm told me roughly 6 weeks time, roughly 15/16hp from a 149cc kit

Wouldn’t it be slower now you dropped a tooth ?

I've actually tested out a whole bunch of gearing combos since this video, and at the moment, I'm happiest with the 15T/39T combo. Making gearing changes doesn't automatically equate to "slower" or "faster," it depends on the power of the engine and where you want that power. Going with a lower ratio will give you bottom end power (zippier, more quickly gets up to speed), but if your engine has enough power it will "gear out" and not give you the top speed you want. Alternatively, going with a higher ratio will sacrifice some low end power for a higher top speed. Check out: www.gearingcommander.com/ you can pull up all the data for theoretical speeds with different gearing combos on the 2022 Grom and other motorcycles.

11:33 it was NOT going to be the same top speed as 4th gear. It was pulling hard in 5th and was going to put higher top speed numbers had you not hit traffic. Go hit that same run again with the same air density; temperature, humidity, location/altitude, etc and bet that it’s not going to top at 72 if you tuck like you were. If it doesn’t go over 72 if you peg the throttle wide open with you tucked, I’ll send you $20.

10.000 rpm?, Doesn't the reliability of the engine endanger?
@eastcoastish
@eastcoastish 2 года назад
10k rpm limit is no problem, if you want to go higher you need beefier valve springs to prevent valve float.

Can someone explain.... I've been 77mph on my stock 2018 grom... I haven't heard of anyone else getting close but I can consistently get 75+ on hills

I did 140 kph with 2021 grom fully stock
@eastcoastish
@eastcoastish 2 года назад
Dude, 140kph is 87mph, that's the top speed of a CBR250R. With the stock gearing in the '21/'22 Grom you would have to be at 10k RPM in 5th gear to hit 87mph, since the stock bike has an 8,250 redline you would be bouncing off the limiter in 5th gear at 72/73mph.
