Life can be hard at times. We often feel overwhelmed or hurt by the physical world around us. The Dhammapada, a collection of sayings by the Buddha, state that all of this suffering happens within our mind. Our life is ultimately shaped by our mind, and it could lead us to happiness or sorrow. But it's hard to really control our minds right? We can't just stop thinking bad thoughts. If we could, then it would change our lives if we accept the premise that our lives are dictated by our minds. Buddhism does provide a solution however in the form of meditation. By hyper fixating on your breathing, the sensations of your breathing, and the pattern of your breathing, perhaps this can help us train our mind to be more calm and focused. By training and changing our minds, we perhaps can change our lives. #philosophy #buddha #buddhism

I'm getting the habit of meditation, and for the past 3 days, every time I finish my meditation sessions, my mind feels ""boosted", ""hyperconcentraion"", I feel like I received a mental boost, like If I had taken an adderall/concerta pill without even taking a pill. I practice 4 kinds of meditation a couple minutes a day. I try to the practice the four in a row. 1- Sitting still meditation: I simply sit with my eyes closed, and try not to move, move as least as I can(of course your body moves in order to breathe, so you can't stop breathing), and while I focus on trying to not move, it gives me body awareness, and since I can't stop my lungs from doing the involutary movement of breathing , it also makes me notice my breathing. 2- The meditation you mentioned in this video, which is mindfullness of breathing. 3- Focusing on a single point/Trataka meditation: Look at your wall, and focus on a single point of the wall with your eyes as open as possible, trying not to blink for as much time as you can. If you blink, restart again. 4- Counting: Close your eyes, and for a couple minutes, count from 1 to 10 mentally, without speaking, and visualizing the numbers in your head. Do this on loop until the timer runs out. Try to focus only on numbers and counting while doing this, avoid other thoughts.

meditation is beneficial if done carefully and wisely. you have to understand you are working with you mind. and the mind is not a trivial thing. that's most relevant to any deep meditation done apart from surface level or casual meditation.

Meditating is at core of my life philosophy. We suffer because we think we suffer. Meditating makes my life meaningful and able to see the beauty of everyday things. However, having the mindset that everything comes and goe sometimes leaves me with a feeling of emptiness. Like nothing really matters. I love to hear those who object against meditation and buddhism! Anyone? Ps Halo 3

There is a pessimistic and optimistic side to nihilism. Everything comes and goes, and you get to be a part of it.

Thank you for this. I love what you do and yes, you should have fifty billion subscribers. I've found some of the ideas in Buddhism really useful for coping with depression and anxiety over the past year or so, particularly meditation. Dr Wendy Suzuki has done some great research into how establishing a meditation practice spreads into other areas of your life, which confirms what you were saying on the subject. I'd love to see more stuff about Buddhism from you, but enjoy discovering new philosophers that you bring to my attention, so just do whatever. I'll watch it anyway. 😁

I'm currently reading a text discussing the historical degradation of Buddhism from its once more "noble" roots, with Pali Buddhism.

@@PhilosophyToons Beware! He’s a fascinating rabbit hole all on his own! 😂 I recommend Jay Garfield’s translation and commentary as a good place to start, philosophically speaking. While he’s a bit biased toward the Indo-Tibetan philosophical traditions in his interpretations, his thorough grounding in Euro-American philosophical traditions makes his work interesting and accessible for those of us trained in those traditions. If you then want to branch out into East Asian interpretations, I recommend the Kyoto School thinkers, Nishitani in particular. While they don’t often reference Nagarjuna directly, their work is completely rooted in how he was understood and creatively worked with in East Asia.
