Hi JT. Very few people seem to have heard of Simon Turner. An interesting chap with a fascinating career trajectory ... I've always liked Richie Furay. But this comp of his Poco material has made me appreciate him even more. You would have thought that his and Jim Messina's connection to Buffalo Springfield would have been enough to lift Poco into the charts.

Hey Carl Nice eclectic mix there. Simon Turner sounds interesting, not familiar with him at all. I was reccomended to listen to Poco after I showed Last Time Around by Buffalo Springfield. Love Mamas and the Papas, wish I could find their early studio albums. I have a Herbie Mann album, from around 1966, it's an OK listen. Haven't heard Darts for years, I recall the singer co hosting Tiswas back in the day..Den something or other?. Nice Wings Greatest with the poster, that's hard to come by..they never have it. all the best

Hi Rob. That Simon Turner record was the one I got most excited about. His career had many much more credible highlights after this - a couple of LPs as the King Of Luxembourg, a solo album on Creation, and various film soundtracks, none of which I've got ... Poco's 'Pickin' Up The Pieces' is effectively the follow up to 'Last Time Around' ... You're right about Herbie Mann; mostly just OK ... I'm really enjoying Darts at the moment. I can't believe how good they actually were. I used to watch Tiswas, but I'd forgotten that Den Heggarty co-hosted ... I used to have a Paul McCartney poster on my wall as a kid, along with one of David Bowie which you got from The Sun. Cheers for watching and commenting. Best wishes, Carl

Rodney Crowell co-wrote Tulsa Queen with Emmylou Harris and as you mention, James Burton's electric guitar playing adds so much to the arrangement- a deft touch.
@carltweed942
@carltweed942 10 месяцев назад
I like that phrase "deft touch". I had a ticket to see James Burton live a few years ago, and sadly his UK tour got cancelled. The same thing happened with Michael Nesmith.
@NickRatnieks
@NickRatnieks 10 месяцев назад
@@carltweed942 That's a shame- James Burton played on some of Nesmith's recordings but I don't think he was ever in his band for live performances. I saw James Burton in February 1976 at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester with Emmylou and then about 15 years ago at the 100 Club where he was with Billy Swan- and I actually met him and got to talk to him- and shook his hand. I should have made the effort to go to that concert a few months back at the London Palladium but failed to get motivated- probably, the last chance to see him, although someone loaded up the whole concert on YT but it was taken down! I have that Bill Justis album somewhere. When Margaret Ann Rich visited Sun- with some tapes of her husband Charlie playing piano and singing, she met Bill Justis. Justis handed her some Jerry Lee Lewis singles and said to her: "Tell your man to come back here when he gets this bad." Charlie was way too sophisticated a player for Sun- but he listened and was taken on as part of the studio band, doing war ups for Jerry Lee.

@@carltweed942 I don't know how interested you are in Sun Records but I assume that Bill Justis album was released after Shelby Singleton bought Sun from Sam Phillips. There are two really interesting interviews that are on YT- two parts that is- where he talks about his career- and Jerry Kennedy who was a close associate, the recording of Harper Valley PTA and Sun Records and his time in Europe- the Beatles, Johnny Hallyday. Add Musicians' Hall of Fame to his name when you search.

Hi Alan. It's great to hear from you ... I'd never seen that Poco album before either. It's good to have the best of Richie Furay in one place ... If you've seen a photo of Bill Justis, you'll realise why they went down the pretty girl route. I suspect a few people bought the album just for the cover ... I don't know if Wings' 'Greatest' is particularly rare with the poster, but it's nice to have it ... I have a CD box set of the Mamas And Papas. I really appreciate now having a decent vinyl 'best of' too. Thanks for the kind words.

I honestly don't think I've heard of Simon Turner, I'm living under a rock. Some lovely rewarding cheap finds, well worth the wait. Can be ages before decent stuff turns up can't it? Alot of double crammed onto single albums not a good idea.

Hi Martin. That Simon Turner album is so uncool, but I couldn't believe it when I found it ... I'm still amazed at what turns up in charity shops ... I used to buy some of those 'Golden Hour' LPs when I first started collecting - stuff like Donovan and the Kinks. I eventually gave them to charity shops when I realised how awful they sounded.

Very good finds, Carl. I once found a pile of Poco records in a thrift shop, but I left them behind. Was that a mistake? Six tracks from Double Fantasy? I suppose they took all but one of the John tracks and left the Yoko tracks behind. That's not a bad strategy, really 🙂
