This one scene was worth the entire franchise. All the missteps, all the bad writing, rewrites, recasts, pointless deaths, this one scene alone is that damn good to make all of that worth it. Easily my favorite scene of the entire X-man franchise and one that really encapsulates what X-men as a series is about. what i find the most compelling is how even charles, the wisest, peaceful, & hopeful man/teacher, had a past that broke him. he was tired, in pain, afraid, hopeless, & most of all lost, at a younger age, something we’ve all or will feel as life goes on. his older self is right, such pain will make you stronger. as long as you have hope, an ability all humans have. in turn, charles developed stronger compassion, wisdom, & hope for himself & others. hope that did not falter even in the darkest future. growing up on x-men hits hard when quotes like these are said. this is definitely along the lines of what one would say to their younger selves, just keep going & grow.

Exactly. I'd take it a step further. I'd say this is a peak Marvel adaptation. The most deep and profound scene in a movie about Marvel characters is between this or in Logan, when Prof X tells Logan about family. Ironically, they both feature Prof X. I mean, "When someone stumbles or loses their way, that doesn't mean they're lost forever. Sometimes we all need a little help." I mean, OMG, can any line sum up being a hero or helping someone in need better than that?? I thought the Aunt May's speech in Spiderman 2 was wonderful. But this cut to the chase so much quicker. There was virtually no fat in this movie. So IMO Days of Future Past replaced Spiderman 2 because of this one scene

This scene to me is so invigorating and at the same time so sad. Seeing how far Charles had fallen from his optimistic self to his depressed state after losing so many of his friends, the failure of his school after the Vietnam War, his legs and now learning that in half a century how truly right Erik was in how humanity will never accept mutant kind and try to kill them all despite all the good the X-Men have done. It's no wonder why Charles was so against doing anything more to stop the creation of the sentinels since it seemed like no matter how hard he tried, it would always end in failure and only bring more pain and suffering for him. It's only when Charles talks to Professor X that he's finally able to start his way back from his depression and work towards bettering himself again. Charles seeing from Professor X's memories that despite how things ended up in the future, that he was still able to do a lot of good that helped many people along the way, was what Charles needed and learning that despite all the tragedy that his future self endured, that he still had hope for peace with humanity is what Charles deep down wanted to hear. Knowing that even in his darkest hour that the ability to keep hoping and trying to change the messed up world is what truly made him strong in the ways that mattered most. Charles learned that despite his stumbles along the way, even if he might fail countless times over, that doing nothing never solved anything either and that to change the world for the better, Charles needed to look past his own pain and risk putting his faith back in humanity again if he was going to change anything. It's such a humanizing moment that's so relatable with how many people have faced failure and depression in our own lives and how hard it is to bring ourselves out of that downward spiral. Putting our hearts, dreams, ambitions and hopes on the line again and again even with the possibility of feeling the pain of failure over and over again, is such a hard decision to make, but Charles chooses to leave the comfort of safety and certainty, and put the needs of the future and others above his own desires to not risk being hurt again. It shows why the world needs people like Charles Xavier to change the world for the better and why he's the leader of the X-Men. I just wish that in the new timeline that things had worked out better for him and the X-Men after we found out what happened to him in Logan, they really should've stopped with this movie. But the beautiful message with how in spite of our failures, that we can still do plenty good along the way even if our end goals don't go as we plan is still such an invigorating message to me. Despite how things ended up for the X-Men, if it wasn't for Charles and Logan then all of the children like Laura and her friends would've been killed. Great message in how even if we might stumble in our journies that we can still go and do things that can change the world for the better, even if only in little ways at certain times in the path of life.

The way Mcavoy said “so much pain” is so beautifully delivered. As we always see Patrick Stewart Professor X in control of his emotions. But here Mcavoy shows that it never came over night to have such control. It is not an easy ride and he had to feel pain all the time. But one day he will see and feel the reward to it. One of my favourite scenes in a superhero movie. As Mcavoy made X feel so fragile. But showing us he has the inner strength in him. And when he discovers the strength of hope he will never fall.

1:42 Young Charles is hurt, angry, but determined in blocking against the pain. Eyes are tense, emotional, the pain is threatening to overwhelm him. 1:48 Young Charles looks away to actually think about the pain, even just momentarily enough to speak it. His eyes are now tearing, even just saying the word is too much. He switches from determined to hold back the tears by holding back the pain, to determined to hold himself together despite the pain - all in a single take, there was no shot changes or cut away, it was a long take. James McAvoy absolutely nailed the mindset of Professor Charles Xavier processing the tragic side of his power, stepping closer to the older Charles Xavier we are familiar with. And he did it with masterful acting.

Absolutely one of THE best scenes in the X-men series. The emotion, the pain, the will to "hope again". Its really a touching scene. And sometimes, all it takes is yourself to remind you that you can rise above anything. I feel like thats what Charles' future self did here. Love this scene. 😭

I'm rewatching this movie and just saw this scene again. When I first saw this movie I was a super super fit 20ish year old with no care in the world. Fast forward a few years and I was hit by a car and lost a leg in the process. 9 months of bed rest and re-learning how to walk. 3 years later and this scene really hit hard for me. It felt like that was truly what I went through in my own head and how I got past it. I really did have this conversation with my old self and my new self now. I was on the brink of losing myself but somehow made it through. This almost made me cry but didn't because I felt like it was empowering to me. This hits is very deep, even for someone who hasn't gone through a super rough life impairing situation. For someone who has though? You can't describe it really, even if you've made it

From Empath to the very next. I must confess this scene from X-Men is truly one of my very best. It is nothing less than a small glimpse into myself. Since I was a child I have always felt to myself that I was unique. No not like Mystiq, but more through that of Empathy. Without it this world would crumble under its own weight. I realize my true genius doesnt lie or rely on the things we have come to define this simingly physical world. Hope is the Quintessential mindset that frees one from his bondage wether real or hypothetical. Such a Marvel these scene is that It brought me to tears. Thank you sharing your art with the world to pay witness.
